About KOHORT Studio

Created for hairdressers, by hairdressers. The co-working salon on Bridge Road, Richmond, built on a 429-review legacy and a new idea of what a hair salon can be.

The Story of KOHORT

KOHORT grew out of two decades of hairdressing in inner Melbourne.

Our founder, Billie Jean Murphy, built and ran Billie Jean Hair into one of inner Melbourne's most trusted salons — a reputation earned appointment by appointment, across Richmond, Fitzroy, Collingwood, South Yarra and beyond, and reflected in more than 429 five-star Google reviews.

By the early 2020s, something was shifting. The best stylists were burning out, and the structures they were working within had stopped making sense.

KOHORT was Billie's answer. She took the Bridge Road location, the team, and the reputation — and rebuilt the model from the ground up as a co-working studio. A light-filled Richmond space where stylists run their own businesses and clients get the full attention of one specialist, from consultation to finish.

The bones of Billie Jean Hair are still here. But the chairs belong to the stylists who sit in them, and the studio runs at the pace that good hairdressing actually needs.

The Co-Working Salon Difference

KOHORT is a co-working hair salon. That phrase gets used loosely these days, so here is what it actually means at our Richmond studio.

Every stylist at KOHORT is an independent practitioner. They own their chair, set their own pricing, manage their own diary, carry their own insurance, run their own marketing, and answer to their own clients.

There is no salon manager chasing daily retail targets. There is no apprentice tier filling dead time with junior cuts. There is no commission grid splitting your appointment revenue three ways.

The stylist you book is the stylist who runs the entire service from consult to blow-dry finish, and the stylist who earns the result.

This model was created for hairdressers, by hairdressers.

For the client, the co-working model delivers a different kind of appointment. Longer, quieter, unhurried. No hand-offs. No front-desk queue jumping.

Honest product recommendations. Our retail wall carries Davines, Evo and K18 — the same brands used in the chair.

Our Approach to Hair

Every stylist at KOHORT has their own style, but a few things are consistent across the studio.

Consultation first. Every new appointment starts with a proper sit-down — natural light, hands in your hair, honest conversation about what you've got and where you want to go. For bigger services like colour correction, balayage or a pixie transition, a dedicated consultation before booking chair time is a must. It means your stylist can plan properly and give you an accurate quote.

Unhurried appointments. We run longer than a traditional salon. A balayage is three and a half to four hours. A colour correction can be a full day. We don't double-book, and we don't rush.

Honest product recommendations. Our retail wall carries Davines, Evo and K18 — the same brands used in the chair. If your stylist recommends something to take home, it's because they just used it on your hair and they believe in it.

Kohort Services
