Extensions
Length, thickness and colour blend done properly, arranged with the stylist who already knows your hair.
What Are Hair Extensions?
Hair extensions are lengths of additional hair, human or high grade synthetic, added to your natural hair to build length, thickness or colour dimension. Done well, extensions look like hair that grew out of your own head. The difference is the quality of the hair, the install method, the colour match, and the stylist's ability to cut and blend the extension once installed.
At Kohort, hair extensions are arranged through your stylist on request rather than as a fixed menu item. Different clients suit different methods, and the co-working model means each stylist can arrange the brand, length and method that fits the specific brief. Regulars can mention extensions at their next visit or email salon@kohort.com.au to start the conversation.
There are three install methods we discuss most often. Tape in extensions are small sandwich panels bonded to a thin slice of hair with medical grade adhesive. Fastest method, two to three hours, most versatile for fine to medium density. Re tape every six to eight weeks. Weft extensions are longer hand tied or machine wefted strips sewn into a micro braid or bead track close to the scalp. Suit thicker hair and last eight to twelve weeks between refits. Sew in extensions, or braidless weaves, are sewn into a micro bead row that lifts the natural hair into a secure anchor.
Extensions are not for everyone. Fine, damaged or chemically overprocessed hair often needs rebuilding with bond treatments first. Hair with significant breakage or extensive box dye history needs a conversation before install, because extensions add weight and tension.
Extensions also are not a shortcut. They require home care, regular maintenance, and realistic expectations. A good extension service is a long relationship with your stylist, not a one off install and forget.
How KOHORT Approaches Hair Extensions
At Kohort, extensions are treated as a long term colour and shape commitment, not a quick add on.
The consultation is longer than a standard colour consultation. Your stylist looks at your natural hair density, texture, condition and colour in daylight, discusses lifestyle, wash rhythm, hot tool use, swimming, and what the end result needs to look like. A sleek ponytail and a beach wave need different extension planning. From that conversation, your stylist recommends method, quality, length and volume.
Colour matching is done in person, never from a photo. Multiple wefts are held against your natural hair in daylight. Dimensional hair, lived in balayage or grey blending may need more than one extension colour. Custom toning the extension hair in salon is often a better match than an off the shelf shade.
Install technique matters. Our stylists install with clean, measured sectioning, consistent placement, and attention to how tapes, wefts or beads sit when the hair is worn up. Placement too close to the hairline causes visibility. Placement too far from the scalp causes sliding. Our stylists err conservative, placing interior first and extending only when density clearly calls for it.
The cut after install is the step that separates a good extension service from an average one. Extension hair comes at a single blunt length. Your stylist will razor cut, point cut or internally layer the extensions so they blend seamlessly into your natural length.
Bond support is built in. Extension hair is detached from your follicle and does not receive scalp nutrients. Your stylist will recommend K18 Molecular Repair, Olaplex bonding or a Kérastase Fusio Dose mask routine.
The retail shelf supports the service. Sulphate free shampoo like Kérastase Blond Absolu, Davines Love Curl or K18 peptide shampoo, a loop brush for fine bonds, and a silk pillowcase for sleep.

Extensions Process
1. Consultation
A fifteen to thirty minute in salon consultation to look at your natural hair in daylight, discuss method and length, colour match, and quote. Your stylist may take photos and order the hair based on your specific match.
2. Hair Ordering
Once you confirm, your stylist orders the extension hair, which usually arrives within a week. Some custom colours take longer.
3. Pre Install Prep
If your natural hair needs colour lift, toning or bond repair before install, those services are booked first. Extensions go into healthy, correctly toned hair.
4. Install
Tape in install is typically two to three hours. Weft and sew in installs are typically three to four hours.
5. Cut and Blend
After install, your stylist cuts and blends the extension hair into your natural length using razor or point cutting technique.
6. Styling and Home Care
Your stylist styles the hair, walks through the home care routine, and books in the re tape or maintenance appointment.
Extensions Pricing at KOHORT
Extensions pricing at Kohort varies significantly by install method, hair quality, length, volume, and stylist. As a guide only, tape in extensions for a full head install typically start from around $800 to $1600 depending on hair quality and volume, with re taping every six to eight weeks typically from $200 to $400. Weft and sew in extensions for a full install typically start from around $1200 to $2500, with maintenance every eight to twelve weeks typically from $250 to $500.
The hair itself is a significant portion of the cost and is priced separately to the stylist's install time. Higher grade European human hair costs more than mid tier Indian or Brazilian human hair. Your stylist will talk you through the options and the trade offs at consultation.
Add on treatments at the install appointment may include K18 Molecular Repair from $50, Olaplex bonding from $50, toning or colour match work, and a post install blow dry and style. Cut and blend is typically included in the install price.
We quote extensions individually based on your hair and your brief. The price for a fine haired, shorter install is meaningfully different to a thick, waist length install, and we do not quote a fixed number until we have looked at your hair. Email salon@kohort.com.au with a photo of your hair and your goal, or book a free in salon consultation.
Aftercare, Making Your Extensions Last
Extensions last as long as your home care lasts.
Brush gently with a loop brush or wide tooth extension brush, never a fine tooth comb through the bonds. Brush ends up, holding the mid length to take tension off the roots.
Sulphate free shampoo only. Kérastase Blond Absolu, Davines Love Curl and K18 peptide shampoo are our go tos.
Condition through mid lengths and ends, never at the root. Root conditioner loosens tape and weft bonds.
Weekly mask on the extension hair. Kérastase Masque Blond Absolu, Davines NouNou or K18 Molecular Repair.
Dry the roots thoroughly after every wash. Damp bonds accumulate bacteria and product build up.
Tie hair up for sleep on a silk pillowcase. Loose plait or loose high ponytail.
Tie hair up for exercise and swimming. Wet with tap water and apply K18 mist before swimming to reduce pool absorption.
Heat protect every time. Kérastase Resistance Ciment Thermique or K18 mist.
Book your re tape or maintenance on time. Six to eight weeks for tape in, eight to twelve weeks for weft and sew in. Waiting too long causes matting.
Who Extensions at KOHORT Is Ideal For
Extensions at Kohort are ideal for guests who want length, thickness or colour dimension that they cannot achieve with their natural hair alone, and who are willing to invest in ongoing maintenance and home care. They are a long term relationship with your stylist, not a one off purchase.
Extensions suit guests who have always wanted longer hair and cannot grow past shoulder length. They suit guests with fine hair who want more body without a full perm or a daily volumising regime. They suit guests who want to add a fashion colour through fashion extensions without committing the natural hair to bleach. They suit brides who want length for a wedding and can either remove the extensions after or keep them in with maintenance.
They suit Spring Racing carnival and formal clients who want fuller, longer hair for a specific event cycle, and who are willing to invest in a temporary install or a full install with a planned removal.
Extensions may not be right for you if your natural hair is currently very compromised or over processed, if you are not willing to invest in the home care routine, or if your budget does not extend to the ongoing maintenance costs. In those cases, your stylist will recommend a rebuild first and revisit extensions later.
Extensions for Clients Across Inner Melbourne
Our extensions book pulls from every inner Melbourne suburb, with concentration from South Yarra, Toorak, Hawthorn, Kew and Camberwell. Chapel Street retail and hospitality staff from South Yarra and Prahran book length and thickness that holds through long shifts. Toorak clients book ahead of Spring Racing Carnival, Como House weddings, Leonda by the Yarra receptions, and Kooyong Classic tennis events, often paired with a balayage refresh.
Hawthorn, Hawthorn East, Kew, Camberwell and Balwyn clients are our most loyal extension regulars, often maintaining installs for years. Boroondara family events, private school graduations, Scotch, Xavier, MLC, Genazzano and Balwyn High functions drive bookings. Guests tend toward natural, lived in extensions rather than fashion colour.
Richmond, Cremorne, Burnley and Abbotsford guests book extensions for specific events, such as engagement parties at the Abbotsford Convent, Richmond AFL Grand Final functions, Cup corporate marquees, and Cremorne tech end of year events. Bridge Road, Swan Street and Church Street hospitality staff book discreet extensions for length.
Fitzroy, Fitzroy North, Collingwood, Carlton, Carlton North and Clifton Hill clients ask for creative extensions, fashion colour placement, pastel ends, or copper tone to match lived in copper balayage. Northcote, Fairfield and Alphington guests request natural lived in extensions.
East Melbourne clients book for Parliament functions, MCG corporate boxes and Xavier or Mercy family events. Melbourne CBD apartment belt clients book for corporate photography, conferences and flagship events. St Kilda clients mix beach wave extensions with polished installs for Palais Theatre and foreshore events. Windsor guests lean creative and editorial, blending fashion colour extensions with shag or undercut bases.
Kohort at 234 Bridge Road, Richmond is fifteen minutes or less from most of inner Melbourne.
