What Is a Bob Haircut?
A bob is a blunt-perimeter cut that traditionally sits between chin and shoulder, with a clean baseline that reads architectural when done well. The modern bob family is broader than most clients realise. A classic bob sits flat and precise along the jaw or collarbone. A French bob is shorter, sits just below the ear, typically paired with a soft fringe, and carries a slightly rounder, more romantic feel. An A-line bob is cut shorter through the back and angled longer through the front, creating a sweep from nape to jaw. A lob is the longer cousin of the bob, sitting at the collarbone or just below, with more wearable length.
What all bobs share is that the perimeter line is the defining feature. The strength of a bob lives in the shape of its baseline. If the perimeter is wrong, no amount of styling product will save it. South Yarra and Toorak clients who book bob maintenance at Kohort often do so because they have experienced bobs that lost their line within two weeks. A properly cut bob should hold its shape for eight to ten weeks before the next refresh.
Bobs suit an extraordinarily wide range of face shapes and hair types, but the specific version of the bob has to match. A blunt bob with no layers suits straight, medium-density hair and a strong jawline. A softer, graduated bob suits fine hair that needs perceived density. An A-line bob suits round faces because the angled length elongates the jaw visually. A French bob suits heart-shaped faces and oval faces beautifully, with the soft fringe balancing the forehead. A long bob suits almost everyone and is the most forgiving of the family.
Bob cutting is one of the most technically demanding categories in the cutting book. The line has to be perfectly level when the head is held in its neutral position, which is harder than it sounds because most clients tilt their head without noticing during a cut. The interior weight has to be removed just enough to let the bob move, but not so much that it loses the blunt finish. Fine hair needs more weight left in. Thick hair needs strategic interior removal so the bob sits rather than flicks.
How KOHORT Approaches Bob Cutting
Every bob at Kohort starts with a dry consultation. Your stylist reads the natural parting, where the hair wants to sit, whether there is a cowlick at the crown or nape, and how the hair currently falls against the jaw. Those details decide the cutting plan. Bobs cut without reading the natural fall typically collapse to one side or flick out at the jawline within days.
Dry cutting is often used through the perimeter of a bob, particularly for softer modern bobs and textured lobs. Cutting the baseline dry means you are reading the length exactly as it will sit, which is especially important for wavy or curly hair that contracts when it dries. For classic blunt bobs, most cutting happens wet for the baseline and dry for the interior weight work.
Point cutting, or chipping, is used to soften the baseline of a bob without losing its line. A pure blunt baseline can read harsh on certain face shapes or with fine hair. Point cutting breaks up the perimeter just enough to make it read intentional but lived-in. Zoe in particular uses point cutting heavily through her signature bob work.
Interior weight removal is where the technical craft of bob cutting actually lives. The interior of a bob is invisible when the hair is lying flat, which is why it is so tempting for less experienced cutters to skip. But the interior weight is what decides whether the bob sits smoothly or flicks at the jaw, whether it holds volume through the crown or collapses flat, and whether it moves when you turn your head or sits stiffly as a block. Japanese shears and point cutting through the interior are the tools we use to get this right.
Fringe work on a bob is a separate craft again. A French bob with a soft baby fringe requires a completely different fringe technique to a classic bob with a side-swept fringe or a curtain fringe. Your stylist will read your fringe cowlick before committing, because a fringe cowlick near the hairline will dictate where the fringe can sit without fighting you every morning.
Razor work features on softer, lived-in bobs. Billie and Taylah both use razors for bobs with more texture and movement. Razor bobs read less architectural and more effortless, which suits the Collingwood, Fitzroy and Windsor fashion demographic. Razor bobs are not the right choice for fine or over-processed hair, which is why consultation always comes first.
The co-working model at Kohort means bob appointments are booked for the time a bob actually needs. A precision bob takes sixty to ninety minutes to cut properly including consultation and finishing. That time is built into the booking, not squeezed around colour clients.
Finishing is what sells a bob. Every bob at Kohort ends with a proper blow dry, typically using a round brush to create a subtle smooth bevel under at the baseline, with light serum or smoothing cream for shine. Kérastase Chronologiste, Davines Oi Oil, and K18 Mist all sit on our retail shelf for clients who want to replicate the finish at home.

Bob Process, What to Expect
1. Consultation
Your stylist looks at your hair dry, discusses the version of the bob that will suit your face shape, density and styling habits, and agrees a shape before any shears come out.
2. Wash and Prep
Wash and condition, with a scalp massage and a bond builder if the hair needs it.
3. Baseline Cutting
The perimeter of the bob is cut, typically with the hair sectioned cleanly and the head held in a neutral position. Wet cutting or dry cutting is used depending on the version of the bob.
4. Interior Work
Weight removal through the interior, point cutting and any razor work through the body of the bob.
5. Dry and Refine
The bob is dried, and your stylist refines the line and the weight with the hair sitting in its natural state.
6. Finishing
Styled blow dry, product recommendations for home, and an honest rebook window.
Bob Pricing at KOHORT
Bob cutting at Kohort typically starts from around $120 for a maintenance bob and $150 to $220 for a first bob or restyle. French bobs, A-line bobs and razor bobs sit at the higher end of that range depending on who you book with, because the cutting time is longer.
Each stylist sets their own rates. Zoe, Sheree, Billie, Taylah and Elodie all price their own books. A senior specialist rate will differ from an apprentice rate.
If you want a precise number before booking, email salon@kohort.com.au with a photo and a reference image. We will come back with a stylist recommendation and a quote.
Aftercare for Your Bob
A bob lives or dies by its blow dry. Here is how to keep the shape honest between appointments.
Wash less. Two to three times a week is plenty for most bobs. Over-washing flattens the root and shortens the life of the shape.
Learn the blow dry. Most bobs sit best with a round brush blow dry that rolls the baseline under slightly, creating a smooth bevel. Your stylist will show you the technique at the chair. Fifteen minutes at the mirror is the difference between a bob that reads expensive and a bob that reads tired.
Use a smoothing product. Kérastase Chronologiste, Davines Oi Oil, or K18 Mist are our three most-recommended bob finishing products. A light coat through the mid-lengths and ends after drying is what keeps the line looking crisp.
Heat protect every time. Bobs live through daily heat styling for most clients. A heat protectant is non-negotiable, every time.
Rebook every eight to ten weeks for most bobs. Shorter bobs and French bobs may need six to eight weeks. The perimeter is what keeps a bob reading as a bob. Once the line starts to soften, the whole shape reads less intentional.
Consider a fringe trim every three to four weeks if your bob includes a fringe. Most Kohort stylists will do a fringe tidy between main appointments at no extra charge for existing clients.
Sleep on silk. Silk pillowcases reduce the friction that causes your bob to bend and kink overnight. South Yarra and Toorak regulars in particular tend to be silk pillowcase converts.
Treat the ends weekly. The perimeter of a bob is the most visible part of the cut. Dry, frayed ends on a bob show up immediately. A weekly mask with Kérastase, Davines or K18 keeps the line looking crisp between cuts.
Who a KOHORT Bob Is Ideal For
You will love a Kohort bob if you want a cut that reads considered, precise and grown-up. Our bob book skews toward clients who value shape and longevity over trend-chasing. South Yarra and Toorak regulars book bobs for the polish. East Melbourne and Hawthorn clients book bobs for the discretion. Cremorne tech clients book bobs for the low-maintenance precision.
A Kohort bob also suits guests who have been told their hair is tricky. Cowlicks, fine density, wavy texture and asymmetrical growth patterns all benefit from the consultation-heavy approach our stylists take. The bob book is where our cutters often solve problems that other salons have failed to resolve.
A bob may not be right if you want the maximum possible length and movement. That is a long layered cut conversation instead. It may also not be right if you are not willing to invest in the rebook cycle, because a grown-out bob loses its identity quickly.
Bob Haircuts for Clients Across Inner Melbourne
Our bob book is one of the most geographically diverse in the cutting book. Richmond locals walk in from Bridge Road apartments and the Cremorne tech precinct, often booking precise lobs that survive both office days and weekend brunches. Burnley riverside clients lean softer, booking lived-in textured bobs that hold up under a helmet or a post-run ponytail.
From south of the river, South Yarra and Toorak clients are a significant chunk of the bob book. Zoe in particular pulls heavily from this corner of the map. The brief is usually polished, refined, precise. Toorak clients often pair their bobs with invisible grey coverage and soft balayage for the Toorak Road, Hawksburn Village and Como House rhythm of life. Prahran clients lean slightly bolder, often booking A-line bobs with more angle and edge.
From the east, Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell, Balwyn and Hawthorn East clients are the other big bob demographic. Boroondara briefs tend toward refined classic bobs with seamless grey blending underneath. Many of these guests book four or five bob maintenance appointments a year and stay loyal for a decade.
East Melbourne clients closer to the MCG and Fitzroy Gardens book polished bobs for Parliament and Collins Street professional life. Melbourne CBD apartment-belt clients often pair bobs with keratin smoothing for corporate-ready polish.
From the north, Fitzroy and Collingwood clients book razor bobs and editorial bobs. Smith Street and Brunswick Street regulars lean toward Billie's razor work. Fitzroy North and Clifton Hill clients are softer, often booking long bobs with copper balayage. Carlton and Carlton North clients bring academic and professional briefs, often book Zoe. Northcote and Fairfield clients come down High Street for lived-in lobs and softer French bobs.
Abbotsford guests from the Convent arts pocket book creative razor bobs. St Kilda clients mix beach-friendly lobs with fashion colour for the arts and hospitality scene.
No matter which suburb you are coming from, Kohort is fifteen minutes or less by car, tram or train from most of inner Melbourne.
Frequently Asked Questions About Bobs at KOHORT
How long does a bob appointment take?
Typically sixty to ninety minutes including consultation, wash, cut and blow dry. Restyle bobs may take longer.
How often should I rebook a bob?
Every eight to ten weeks for most bobs. French bobs and short bobs sometimes need six to eight. Long bobs can stretch slightly longer.
What is the difference between a French bob and an A-line bob?
A French bob is shorter, sits just below the ear, typically paired with a soft fringe, and reads rounder and more romantic. An A-line bob is angled, shorter through the back and longer through the front, creating a sweep from nape to jaw.
Can I get a bob if I have curly hair?
Yes. Curly bobs are cut dry, curl by curl, so the cutter can read the spring factor. Book a consultation and we will match you with the right cutter.
Can I get a bob if I have fine hair?
Fine hair often suits a blunt or softly graduated bob because the blunt baseline reads as perceived density. The cutting strategy adjusts to preserve weight rather than remove it.
Can I get a bob if I have thick hair?
Yes. Thick hair typically needs more strategic interior weight removal to sit smoothly at the jaw without flicking. Consultation will decide the exact approach.
What is a French bob?
A short bob sitting just below the ear, traditionally paired with a soft fringe or baby bangs, often slightly rounded at the perimeter. French bobs read romantic, Parisian and slightly retro.
How much does a bob cost at Kohort?
From around $120 for maintenance and $150 to $220 for a first bob or restyle. Each stylist sets their own rate.
Which stylist should I book for a bob?
For signature modern bobs, French bobs and A-line bobs, book Zoe. For precision classic and short bobs, book Sheree. For razor and editorial bobs, book Billie. For long bobs and lived-in bobs, book Taylah. For glass-finish bobs, book Elodie. If unsure, email salon@kohort.com.au.
Will a bob suit my face shape?
Almost certainly, with the right version. A-line bobs flatter round faces. French bobs flatter heart-shaped and oval faces. Long bobs are forgiving across all face shapes.
Should I get a fringe with my bob?
That depends on your face shape, forehead, and cowlick pattern. Your stylist will read your hairline at consultation and recommend accordingly.
How do I style a bob at home?
Most bobs sit best with a round brush blow dry that rolls the baseline under slightly. A light smoothing product after drying keeps the line crisp. Your stylist will show you the technique at the chair.
