What Is a Bixie Haircut?

A bixie is a hybrid cut that sits between a bob and a pixie, which is exactly where the name comes from. A bixie is shorter than a bob and longer than a pixie, typically sitting around chin length or slightly above, with more length and texture through the top than a pixie and less perimeter weight than a classic bob. It is the cut that gives you the boldness of a pixie with some of the styling flexibility of a bob.

The bixie is one of the most-requested cuts in the inner Melbourne fashion scene right now, and it is not a trend cut in the way the TikTok wolf cut wave was. The bixie has sat in the editorial rotation for years. It traces back to the 60s mod crop, updated through every decade since, and has landed in 2026 as a softer, razor-textured, disconnected version with strong fringe work. Fitzroy, Collingwood, Richmond and Windsor fashion clients make up the bulk of our bixie book for exactly that reason.

The bixie family is broader than most clients realise. A classic bixie sits around chin length, with softly layered top and slightly disconnected sides. A disconnected bixie has a more pronounced step between the top and the sides, often with an undercut. A razor bixie is cut with a razor for a softer, feathered finish, perfect for piecey styling. A long bixie sits just above the jaw, almost bob length, with more textural movement and less blunt perimeter. The over-40 bixie is a softer version popular with Kew, Hawthorn and Camberwell clients transitioning from longer styles to refined shorter hair.

Bixies suit a wider range of face shapes than the cutting rulebook suggests. Square jaws carry bixies beautifully with soft face framing and a curtain fringe. Round faces carry bixies with more disconnection and height through the crown. Oval faces carry any bixie variation. Heart-shaped faces suit bixies with longer front length and a soft fringe to balance the forehead. What matters more than face shape is hairline, cowlick pattern, density and growth direction. A cowlick at the nape or a double crown will shape the bixie more than any cheekbone measurement.

How KOHORT Approaches Bixie Cutting

Every bixie at Kohort starts with a dry consultation. Your stylist needs to read your hair dry to see growth pattern, density, cowlicks and the natural fall of the hair before deciding which version of the bixie will suit you. Bixies cut from a wet diagram consistently miss the brief, because a bixie is a textural cut that relies on how the hair sits dry.

Point cutting is central to bixie work. Point cutting softens the perimeter, breaks up the line between the bob length and the pixie length, and keeps the cut from reading too rigid. A bixie with pure blunt edges reads as a badly cut bob. A bixie with strategic point cutting through the perimeter reads as intentional and modern.

Razor cutting features heavily in Billie's bixie work. A razor produces the feathered, piecey, softly broken texture that bixies rely on, particularly through the top and the fringe. Razor work also produces the kind of fringe weight distribution that keeps a micro fringe or a curtain fringe from sitting like a solid block. Razor work requires healthy hair, so consultation comes first.

Disconnection is often built into a bixie, though less extreme than a mullet. A disconnected bixie has a visible step between the top length and the side length, often paired with a small undercut behind the ear or at the nape. Disconnection is what gives a bixie its architectural edge. Sheree and Billie both build disconnection into their bixie work when the hair and the brief suit it.

Internal weight removal is the difference between a bixie that moves and a bixie that sits flat. Fine hair bixies need conservative weight removal to preserve perceived density. Thick hair bixies need more aggressive weight removal so the shape does not sit like a helmet. The balance is read at the chair, during cutting, not from a diagram.

Fringe work on a bixie is one of the cut's defining features. Curtain fringes, micro fringes, piecey razor fringes and side-swept fringes all suit different bixie variations. Your stylist will read your cowlick pattern at consultation before committing to a fringe. A fringe cut against your cowlick will fight you. A fringe cut with your cowlick falls into place every morning.

The co-working model at Kohort means bixie appointments are booked for the time the cut actually needs. A proper bixie takes seventy-five to one hundred and five minutes including consultation and finishing.

Finishing a bixie is critical. Product choice is the difference between a bixie that reads styled and a bixie that reads like a haircut. Texturising sprays, matte pastes, light creams and dry texture sprays are the bixie toolkit. Kérastase, Davines and K18 all sit on our retail shelf.

Bixie Process, What to Expect

1. Consultation

Your stylist reads your hair dry, discusses reference photos, and decides the version of the bixie that will suit your hair, face shape and styling habits.

2. Wash and Prep

Wash, condition, towel dry, detangle.

3. Perimeter Cutting

The bob length of the bixie is established, usually with the hair sectioned cleanly. The perimeter sits around chin length or slightly above.

4. Top and Layering

The top and internal layering is cut to create the pixie-like shortness through the crown, with graduated length meeting the perimeter.

5. Fringe

The fringe is cut last, reading the final shape to decide where the fringe should sit.

6. Dry and Refine

Your stylist dries the hair, reads the weight, and does the finer detailing with the hair sitting in its natural state.

7. Finishing

Styling product, technique demonstration for home, retail recommendations, and a rebook window.

Bixie Pricing at KOHORT

Bixie cutting at Kohort typically starts from around $130 for a maintenance bixie and $160 to $220 for a first bixie or restyle. Razor bixies and editorial bixies may sit higher depending on the cutter.

Each stylist sets their own rate. Sheree, Billie and Zoe all price their own books. For existing clients with established bixie rotations, booking directly is fine. For first bixies, we recommend a fifteen minute consultation to confirm the version of the bixie and to quote accurately.

If you want a precise number before booking, email salon@kohort.com.au with a photo and a reference image. We will come back with a stylist recommendation and a quote.

Aftercare for Your Bixie

A bixie sits in the high-maintenance-at-the-salon, low-maintenance-at-home category. Here is how to keep it looking like the day you left the chair.

Rebook every five to six weeks. A bixie collapses visually before it looks overgrown. The top and fringe go first, then the perimeter softens, and by week eight the cut reads as a grown-out short bob rather than a deliberate bixie. Five to six weeks keeps the cut alive.

Fringe trims every three to four weeks if your bixie has a fringe, which most bixies do. Most Kohort stylists will include a fringe tidy between main appointments at no extra charge for existing clients.

Use texturising product. Matte pastes, sea-salt sprays, light creams and dry texture sprays are the bixie toolkit. Avoid heavy waxes and pomades, which will weigh the cut down.

Learn the blow dry. A bixie does not need much drying time. Rough dry with your fingers for piecey texture, or use a small round brush for a smoother finish. Five minutes is usually enough. Your stylist will show you the technique at the chair.

Wash less than you think. Every second or third day is plenty. Short hair holds natural oils, and over-washing flattens the cut through the crown.

Heat protect every time. Short hair is exposed. Heat damage shows faster than on longer hair because there is nowhere to hide frayed ends.

Treat your scalp. The Kohort Scalp Ritual is popular with bixie clients because a healthy scalp supports healthy short hair and visible styling.

Who a KOHORT Bixie Is Ideal For

You will love a Kohort bixie if you want a cut that reads confident, architectural and slightly fashion-forward without going all the way to a pixie. Our bixie book splits roughly in two. The first half is the editorial Fitzroy, Collingwood, Richmond and Windsor fashion client who wants a razor-textured, disconnected bixie with piecey styling. The second half is the over-40 Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell and Balwyn client who is transitioning from longer hair and wants a refined, precise bixie that reads elegant rather than severe.

A Kohort bixie also suits guests who have been told a pixie is too short for them but a bob is too much length. The bixie was built for that exact middle ground. Consultation will tell us whether your hair and face shape can carry the specific version of the bixie you are chasing.

A bixie may not be right if you want a cut that does not need a five to six week rebook cycle. The bixie is a maintenance-aware cut by design.

Bixie Haircuts for Clients Across Inner Melbourne

Our bixie book pulls evenly from inner north, east and south. Richmond locals walk in from Bridge Road apartments and the Cremorne tech precinct. Cremorne clients in particular like bixies for the precision-meets-low-fuss combination that suits tech-industry life. Burnley riverside guests lean softer, often booking grown-in long bixies with natural tone work.

From the north, Fitzroy and Collingwood are our most fashion-forward bixie demographic. Smith Street, Brunswick Street and Gertrude Street clients book Billie for razor bixies with disconnected sides and editorial fringe work. Fitzroy North clients lean softer, often booking modern bixies with curtain fringes. Carlton and Carlton North academic clients book bixies for wearable professional fashion. Clifton Hill clients book softer grown-in bixies. Northcote and Fairfield clients come down High Street for creative bixies with copper or natural tone work. Brunswick clients cross Lygon Street for editorial bixie work.

From the east, Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell, Balwyn and Hawthorn East clients are a significant chunk of our over-40 bixie book. These Boroondara clients are often transitioning from mid-length hair and want a bixie that reads refined and considered. Sheree is the most-booked cutter from this corner of the map.

From south of the river, South Yarra, Toorak and Prahran clients cross Punt Road for refined bixies. Windsor is a fashion-first bixie suburb, often booking Billie for razor work. Commercial Road queer and gender-affirming clients frequently book bixies for the consultation-led approach to cuts that sit outside a binary brief.

Abbotsford guests from the Convent arts pocket book creative bixies. East Melbourne clients near the MCG and Fitzroy Gardens book polished bixies for Parliament and Collins Street professional life. St Kilda arts and hospitality clients book beachy bixies with fashion tone. Melbourne CBD apartment-belt clients book bixies for corporate-adjacent professional polish.

No matter which suburb you are coming from, Kohort is fifteen minutes or less by car, tram or train from most of inner Melbourne.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bixies at KOHORT

How long does a bixie appointment take?

Typically seventy-five to one hundred and five minutes including consultation, wash, cut and blow dry. Restyle bixies may take longer.

How often should I rebook a bixie?

Every five to six weeks. Fringe trims every three to four weeks in between if your bixie has a fringe.

What is the difference between a bixie and a pixie?

A pixie is shorter, typically sitting above the ears and well above the jaw, with weight focused through the top. A bixie is longer, sitting around chin length, with the pixie shortness through the top and a bob-like perimeter.

What is the difference between a bixie and a short bob?

A short bob sits evenly around the jaw with a blunt or softly graduated perimeter. A bixie has more aggressive internal layering and shorter top length, making the silhouette more architectural than a bob.

Can I get a bixie on fine hair?

Yes. Fine hair bixies use conservative weight removal to preserve perceived density. Your stylist will adjust the cutting strategy at consultation.

Can I get a bixie on thick coarse hair?

Yes. Thick hair bixies need more strategic weight removal so the shape moves rather than sitting heavy. Razor and point cutting through the interior help.

Can I get a bixie on curly hair?

Yes, with the cut planned around your curl pattern. Curly bixies are cut dry, curl by curl. Book a consultation so we can match you with the right cutter.

Do I need a fringe with my bixie?

Most bixies look best with a fringe of some kind, even a long swept one. Your stylist will discuss the fringe decision at consultation based on face shape and cowlick pattern.

How much does a bixie cost at Kohort?

From around $130 for maintenance and $160 to $220 for a first bixie or restyle. Each stylist sets their own rate.

Which stylist should I book for a bixie?

For refined classic bixies, book Sheree. For razor and editorial bixies, book Billie. For soft modern bixies, book Zoe. If unsure, email salon@kohort.com.au.

Will a bixie suit my face shape?

With the right version, almost certainly. Face shape is one input, but hairline, cowlick pattern and density matter more. Your stylist will discuss at consultation.

Can I grow out a bixie?

Yes. A correctly cut bixie grows out into a longer bob beautifully. Stretch to eight weeks between cuts and book a fringe tidy in between if you want to grow it out.

How do I style a bixie at home?

Rough dry with your fingers for piecey texture, or use a small round brush for a smoother finish. Work in a matte paste or texturising spray while the hair is still slightly damp. Your stylist will show you the technique at the chair.

Where is Kohort and how do I get there?

234 Bridge Road, Richmond VIC 3121. Burnley and East Richmond stations are eight to ten minutes walk. Tram 48 and 75 run along Bridge Road directly past the door.

Is there parking near the salon?

Yes. Two-hour metered street parking on Bridge Road and free longer parking on residential side streets within a block or two.
