What Are Half Head Foils?

Half head foils are the targeted version of the classic foil highlight service. Rather than foiling every section from the nape to the crown, your colourist focuses the service on the top, crown and face framing sections. These are the areas most visible when you part your hair, wear it down, or catch your reflection in a mirror. Half head foils place the lightener exactly where brightness reads on camera and in daylight, and leave the under-layers in their natural depth for softer dimension underneath.

Half head foils are the right service when you want visible brightness without the commitment, time or cost of a full head. A full head foil covers every section from root to tip for uniform blonde. A half head covers only the sections that frame your face and sit on top when you style your hair. The result is bright where you want it, natural where it will not show, and a service that slots into a two and a half to three hour appointment rather than a four hour block.

The service is particularly popular with guests who have lightened hair through the mid-lengths and ends from previous services, and who simply want to refresh the brightness up top and through the face frame. It is also popular with first-time foil clients who want to see what foils look like on them before committing to a full head. And it is a favourite service for guests who want a brighter face frame than their balayage currently delivers, effectively using half head foils as a layering service on top of an existing balayage.

Half head foils differ from a T-section or face-framing foil service in scope. A T-section focuses only on the centre parting and hairline. A face framing foil focuses only on the front sections around the face. Half head covers the whole top of the head from parting to crown plus the face frame, giving significantly more coverage than either T-section or face framing alone.

Half head foils also differ from babylights. Babylights are defined by the weave density rather than the placement area, and they can be used across a half head, full head or any specific zone. A half head foil service can absolutely be done as babylights if that is the brief, in which case the foils are finer and more closely woven for a softer finish.

Related services include full head foils, highlights, balayage, lived-in blonde and root touch-up.

How KOHORT Approaches Half Head Foils

Half head foils at Kohort are treated as precision placement work. Because the service is focused rather than comprehensive, every foil counts. Your colourist needs to read your parting, your face shape, the way you wear your hair styled, and where the light will hit the foils in daylight and on camera. Badly placed half head foils sit awkwardly against the under-layers. Well placed half head foils look like they could have been full head foils because the brightness blends so cleanly.

Your colourist begins with consultation. Hair dry in natural light, colour history reviewed, placement plan confirmed, toning strategy agreed. For a first half head foil with us we recommend a free fifteen-minute in-salon consultation so your colourist can see the hair and plan properly before booking.

Bond support is built into every half head foil service at Kohort. Before lightener is packed into the foils, our colourists will often apply L'Oréal Metal Detox for guests with any colour history or mineral build-up. Metal Detox neutralises metal particles trapped in the cortex from tap water, old box dye or previous foil services. Neutralising those metals makes the lift cleaner, more predictable and far gentler on the hair.

During the foil application, Olaplex Bonding Treatment or K18 Molecular Repair is woven into the lightener formula. Olaplex rebuilds broken disulphide bonds in real time as lightener does its work. K18 uses a bioactive peptide that reconnects keratin chains at the cortex. For half head foil clients, bond support keeps the top and face frame in healthy condition across repeat appointments, which matters because these are the sections most visible and most commonly hot-styled. An Olaplex Chelating Treatment is available for clients with heavy metal or mineral load.

Weave density is decided by the look. Tighter weaves produce a softer, babylight-style finish. Wider weaves produce a brighter, more defined dimension. Your colourist will choose based on your face shape, parting, and styling preference.

Toning is where a good half head foil becomes a great one. Our colourists tone based on your skin tone, eye colour, natural base level and the shade you are trying to hit. Cool ash for pale cool skin, beige for mid tones, warmer honey for olive or warm skin. Over-toning flattens the result. Under-toning leaves hair yellow. Ten to twenty minutes on tone is standard in every half head foil appointment.

The Kohort co-working model changes the pace of a half head foil appointment. Your colourist owns the service from consultation through to finish, with no rotating between chairs or handoffs between technicians. That continuity matters because half head foil timing is tight. Foils that sit too long blow out to white and fragile. Foils pulled too early leave banding.

Finishing closes every service. Kérastase Fusio Dose Ritual or Davines Liquid Luster gloss, followed by a blow dry, style and retail recommendations. Fusio Dose keeps shine reading bright for up to eight washes. Liquid Luster uses lamellar technology for a smooth reflective finish. If your service includes a cut, the cut happens after the colour so the shape flatters the foil placement.

Retail is matched to the service. Kérastase Blond Absolu for cool blonde maintenance, K18 Molecular Repair leave-in for bond care, Davines Alchemic for at-home tone refresh, and Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector for weekly bond work. What your colourist recommends is on our retail shelf.

Half Head Foils Process, What to Expect

1. Consultation

Your colourist reviews your hair dry in natural light, discusses colour history and styling routine, and confirms the placement plan and target shade.

2. Preparation

L'Oréal Metal Detox or Olaplex Chelating Treatment for any colour history. Sectioning is planned around your parting, face frame and cut shape.

3. Foil Application

Your colourist weaves sections across the top, crown and face framing areas and wraps each foil by hand. A half head typically runs between 40 and 80 foils depending on density.

4. Processing

Foils develop under even heat until lift is at target. Your colourist monitors lift closely. Bond support runs through this stage where appropriate.

5. Toning

Lightener is rinsed, a bespoke toner is applied and left to develop. Final shade is locked in here.

6. Finishing

Kérastase Fusio Dose Ritual or Davines Liquid Luster gloss, blow dry, style, home care conversation, and an honest rebook window.

Half Head Foils Pricing at KOHORT

Half head foil pricing at Kohort varies by colourist, foil count, hair length and density. As a guide, half head foils start from around $250 and run higher for long, dense or heavily pre-coloured hair. Pricing includes consultation, toning and a blow-dry finish.

Add-on treatments are priced separately and strongly recommended on lifted hair. K18 Molecular Repair from $50. Olaplex Bonding Treatment from $50. L'Oréal Metal Detox from $45. Kérastase Fusio Dose Ritual at $50. Davines Liquid Luster at $25. Olaplex Chelating Treatment from $50 for heavy mineral load. Bhave keratin smoothing from $250 if you want six to twelve weeks of humidity-safe polish alongside the foil service.

Because half head foil pricing scales with hair length, density and foil count, we do not quote final pricing without seeing the hair. If you want a quote before booking, email salon@kohort.com.au with photos of your current hair and your reference look, or book a free fifteen-minute in-salon consultation. Every colourist at Kohort is an independent business setting their own rates.

Aftercare for Half Head Foils

Half head foils hold beautifully with the right aftercare. The rules mirror those for full head foils but the maintenance is generally lighter because the under-layers are untouched.

Wash less. Three times a week maximum for the best tone retention. Dry shampoo between washes keeps the hair fresh without stripping colour.

Sulphate-free shampoo is non-negotiable. Sulphates strip colour faster than anything else. Kérastase Blond Absolu is our top pick for cool half head foiled hair. Davines Alchemic and the K18 peptide shampoo also work beautifully.

Purple or silver shampoo once a week. Left on for three to five minutes and rinsed. Daily use is one of the most common home-care mistakes, leaving the lighter sections flat and slightly grey.

Heat protect before any hot tool. Every time. Foiled ends lose moisture faster than virgin ends under heat. A heat protectant is the fastest way to extend the life of the service.

Weekly mask. K18 Molecular Repair mask, Kérastase Masquintense Blond or Davines NouNou are our go-tos. K18 is the heaviest repair. Masquintense Blond tones and conditions. NouNou is deep moisture.

Chlorine and salt water fade half head foils faster than almost anything else. Before swimming, wet your hair with tap water and apply a leave-in. Rinse immediately after.

Refresh with a mid-cycle gloss. A Fusio Dose or Liquid Luster gloss at the five to seven week mark can extend half head foils out to eight or ten weeks before the next service.

Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector is a good at-home bond builder for ongoing care between half head foil appointments. Used once a week before shampoo, it keeps internal bond integrity stable across repeat services.

Who Half Head Foils at KOHORT Are Ideal For

Half head foils are ideal for guests who want visible brightness where it shows without the time, cost or commitment of a full head foil service. They suit guests with previously lightened mid-lengths and ends who want to refresh the top and face frame. They also suit guests who want to try foils without committing to the full head first.

They suit busy professionals who want a visible, photograph-ready result but can only commit to a two and a half to three hour appointment. They suit clients booking around lunch windows, half day Fridays, or school pick-up schedules. The service slots into a tight calendar more easily than a full head.

They suit guests with significant grey in the top and hairline sections who want clean blending without the expense of a full head foil. For guests whose grey is concentrated through the parting and face frame rather than across the entire head, half head foils combined with a root application deliver targeted coverage without unnecessary extra work.

Half head foils may not be the right fit if you want uniform brightness from nape to crown. That is a full head foil brief. They may also not suit if your goal is a dramatic overall blonde transformation in one session from a dark base, which is usually a colour correction conversation rather than a half head foil one.

Half Head Foils for Clients Across Inner Melbourne

Our half head foil book pulls from every inner Melbourne suburb. Richmond locals often book half head foils as a maintenance service between full head appointments, popping in over a lunch window from Bridge Road or the Cremorne tech precinct. Cremorne clients from the SEEK, REA and MYOB offices around Church Street book half head foils as their primary maintenance service because the two and a half hour appointment fits neatly into an afternoon off. Burnley riverside guests lean toward half head babylights paired with long layered cuts that hold up on the Yarra trail.

From south of the river, South Yarra and Toorak clients cross Punt Road for half head foils as a refresh on top of existing balayage or full head services. The typical booking cadence is every five to seven weeks. Chapel Street retail and hospitality staff from Prahran and Windsor book half head foils for visible brightness that photographs well through double shifts. Prahran clients often ask for a creative accent in the face framing section. Windsor clients lean cooler and more fashion-forward.

From the north, Fitzroy and Fitzroy North guests book half head foils with an artistic lean. Sharper face framing, bolder contrast, editorial toning, and creative placement through the top. Collingwood regulars from Smith Street, Gertrude Street and the Collingwood Yards precinct bring adventurous half head briefs. Northcote and Fairfield guests come down High Street and Heidelberg Road for soft, copper-leaning half head foils that flatter the inner north aesthetic. Clifton Hill and Alphington guests book gentle half head babylight placements with subtle grey blending.

From the east, Hawthorn, Hawthorn East, Kew, Camberwell and Balwyn clients use half head foils as a refined maintenance service between full head appointments. The Boroondara brief here is usually about keeping the face frame and parting fresh between full head sessions. Balwyn clients in particular book half head foils as a quick refresh ahead of Balwyn High formals and school functions.

Carlton and Carlton North clients, many from the University of Melbourne academic community, book softer natural half head foil briefs. Abbotsford guests from the Convent arts pocket request warm half head foils with a copper or honey lean. East Melbourne clients closer to the MCG, Fitzroy Gardens and St Patrick's Cathedral book refined half head foils suited to Parliament and Collins Street professional life. St Kilda clients mix beach-friendly half head foils with humidity-safe finishing, often paired with a keratin smoothing service. Melbourne CBD apartment-belt clients usually book half head foil slots on a Friday afternoon as a lunch-break-plus refresh ahead of the weekend.

No matter which suburb you are coming from, Kohort is fifteen minutes or less by car, tram or train from most of inner Melbourne.

Frequently Asked Questions About Half Head Foils at KOHORT

What is the difference between half head and full head foils?

Full head foils cover every section including the under-layers and nape. Half head foils cover only the top, crown and face framing sections. Half head takes less time and costs less than full head.

How long does a half head foil appointment take?

Two and a half to three hours, depending on hair length, density and whether a cut or treatment is paired with the service.

How many foils are in a half head?

Between 40 and 80, depending on density and length. Your colourist decides foil count based on the brief and the hair.

How often should I book half head foils?

Every five to seven weeks for the brightest result. A mid-cycle gloss at around four weeks can extend the window.

Will half head foils cover my grey?

Yes for grey concentrated through the top and parting. For comprehensive grey coverage across the full head, a full head foil or a root touch-up alongside half head foils is usually the better plan.

Do half head foils damage hair?

All lightening services have an impact. With pre-colour L'Oréal Metal Detox, bond support through the service with Olaplex or K18, and good home care, damage is minimised.

How much do half head foils cost at Kohort?

From around $250, higher for long, dense or heavily pre-coloured hair. Add-on treatments from $25 to $50. Precise pricing at consultation.

Can I get half head foils on short hair?

Yes. Sheree and Billie both specialise in half head foils on short hair, pixies and bobs.

Can I get half head foils on previously dyed hair?

Usually yes. L'Oréal Metal Detox is almost always added for previously coloured hair. Heavier box dye histories may need a correction session first.

Can I book half head foils alongside my balayage?

Yes. Many of our regulars do exactly this. Half head foils through the top and face frame, balayage for the softer grow-out through the mid-lengths and ends.

Can half head foils become babylights?

Yes. Babylights are defined by the weave density, not the placement area. Your colourist can do half head foils with tight babylight weaves for a softer finish.

Which stylist should I book for half head foils?

For bright photo-ready results, book Taylah or Zoe. For soft natural finish, book Sheridan or Grace. For short hair, book Sheree. For creative placement, book Billie. If unsure, email salon@kohort.com.au and we will match you.

Where is Kohort and how do I get there?

234 Bridge Road, Richmond VIC 3121. Burnley and East Richmond stations are eight to ten minutes walk. Trams 48 and 75 run along Bridge Road directly past the door.

Is there parking near the salon?

Yes. Two-hour metered street parking on Bridge Road and free longer parking on residential side streets within a block.
