A Salon for Toorak Locals
Toorak is old-money Melbourne, and the style signature that comes with it is one of the most specific in the city. Discreet wealth rather than flashy wealth. Classic tailoring rather than logo-heavy retail. European bakeries over brunch spots. Black German SUVs at school drop-off. And hair that is expensive-looking, expertly maintained, and never obviously coloured. When a Toorak client walks into Kohort, the brief almost always lands somewhere in that territory, and the studio is built to deliver on it.
Our Toorak regulars tend to share a few clear characteristics. Executives, barristers, surgeons, finance principals, senior consultants, and the partners who run the household alongside them. International families from the significant Chinese, Singaporean and Indonesian expat communities that have settled into Toorak and Hawksburn in the last two decades. Long-term residents in heritage homes behind tall hedges who have been with the same stylist for fifteen years and are finally making a change because their person has retired or moved. The style is classic, expensive-looking, and unshowy. The hair needs to match.
The Toorak brief, when it hits the chair, is rarely about reinvention. It is almost always about maintenance at a very high standard. Signature blonde done so invisibly it reads as natural. Grey coverage that no one ever asks about. Healthy long hair with proper weight through the ends. Refined bobs cut to hang correctly and grow out cleanly. Event styling for society functions, charity galas and private-school formals. Spring Racing Carnival hair that sits under a fascinator and still photographs on a Flemington lawn. Como House and Leonda bridal. Australian Open week styling for the Kooyong crowd. And a flow of men's bookings from Collins Street partners, GPs and specialists who want a discreet tailored cut and are willing to pay properly for it.
Spring Racing in particular is our peak Toorak styling window. From the Caulfield Cup in mid-October through Melbourne Cup week in the first week of November and the Sandown and Ballarat meetings after that, we book trackside blow-dries, Flemington lawn styling, Members Enclosure hair, and Derby Day polished looks for weeks on end. Book early. Toorak clients plan Spring Racing hair months out, and the diary fills accordingly.
Kohort is a co-working salon. Every stylist in the studio is an independent practitioner who owns their own chair, sets their own pricing, and manages their own diary. For Toorak clients who have moved through the glossy Chapel Street and Toorak Village salons over the years and been underwhelmed by the transactional feel, the specialist-led, unhurried, no-upsell model is usually why they switch across. The stylist who consults with you at the start is the stylist who cuts, colours and finishes you at the end.
Getting to Kohort from Toorak
Toorak to 234 Bridge Road runs twelve to sixteen minutes outside of peak, stretching to eighteen on a Punt Road afternoon. The most direct driving route is Toorak Road west, right onto Punt Road, cross the Yarra at the Punt Road bridge, then right onto Bridge Road. Kohort is about four blocks east on the north side of Bridge Road, between Lord Street and Docker Street. If Punt Road is stacked in peak, the Toorak Road to Yarra Boulevard route is a usable alternative that avoids the worst of the Hoddle Street interchange.
Toorak Station sits on the Pakenham, Cranbourne and Frankston lines, giving you a direct train to Richmond Station in five or six minutes. From Richmond Station, walk east up Bridge Road for about ten minutes, or jump on the 48 or 75 tram eastbound, which drops you within thirty metres of the salon. Hawksburn Station is closer for clients living in the Hawksburn Village pocket and runs on the same lines. Door-to-door by train is around twenty to twenty-five minutes, which in peak hour usually beats driving.
The 8 tram runs along Toorak Road through Toorak Village, and for Toorak clients who prefer not to drive in peak, the tram into the CBD and a transfer to the 48 or 75 east to Richmond is a viable option. The 58 tram reaches the Glen Iris end and connects into the city. The 78 tram runs up Church Street into Richmond and picks up if you want to drive to Church Street in South Yarra and park there for a longer run.
Driving parking on Bridge Road is metered with two-hour limits in most bays. For a cut or a gloss, that is fine. For a full foil, event styling or a colour correction running three to four hours, we recommend the Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre car park about 500 metres east of the salon, which is paid but caps. Lord Street, Docker Street and the residential streets north of Bridge Road have longer-stay parking if you scout on arrival.
For Toorak clients with regular drivers, pickup and drop-off works easily on Bridge Road in front of the salon. Plenty of our regulars book their driver for a ninety-minute gap in the middle of a longer service and use the time for a walk on Bridge Road, a coffee at one of the local cafes, or a Victoria Gardens errand. Let us know in advance and we can sequence your appointment for that kind of break.
Services Toorak Clients Love at Kohort
Toorak's booking pattern is one of the most consistent in the studio. Signature blonde maintenance, invisible grey coverage, refined cuts, event and Spring Racing styling, Como House and Leonda bridal, and the treatment services that hold it all together. Here is what we book most often for Toorak clients and why each service suits the suburb.
Signature Blonde and Balayage
The Toorak blonde is a specific thing. A soft, hand-painted balayage in honey, champagne, beige or warm vanilla, with a blended regrowth line so fine that no one ever sees a grow-out ridge. We tone with care, use Olaplex and K18 through every lift, and finish with a Kérastase Fusio Dose for shine. The colour is expensive-looking because it has been executed properly, not because it looks obviously done. Plenty of our Toorak regulars have been blonde for fifteen or twenty years and want a stylist who respects the history. Read more on the Balayage and Lived-In Blonde pages.
Invisible Grey Coverage
Grey coverage is one of the most-booked services for Toorak clients, and the brief is always about invisibility. Full coverage with tone-matched colour, soft hairline placement, and no telltale ring at the temples. For clients who want to transition to their natural grey, we stage it across two or three appointments with strategic highlighting so the grow-out never reads as a line. See the Colour Correction page for the transition approach.
Refined Bobs and Long Hair Maintenance
Toorak clients book a lot of bobs, long bobs and refined long layers. The cut is about shape, weight and how the hair falls rather than disconnection or texture. We cut to the natural fall, balance weight around the face, and finish with a proper blow-dry so you can see the shape. A Kohort bob grows out cleanly for ten to twelve weeks, which matches the booking rhythm most Toorak regulars keep. Full cutting menu on Haircuts.
Spring Racing Carnival Styling
From the Caulfield Cup in October through Melbourne Cup week in early November, we book Spring Racing styling daily. Flemington lawn blow-dries, Members Enclosure polished looks, Derby Day black-and-white-ready styling, Oaks Day softer curls under a fascinator, Stakes Day relaxed waves. We plan the look around your fascinator or headpiece, the weather forecast and your arrival time. Book in September for Melbourne Cup week to secure your preferred stylist and time slot. See the Bridal & Event page for the process.
Como House and Leonda Bridal
Toorak weddings often run out of Como House, Leonda By The Yarra, and the grand private homes around Stonnington. Sheridan, our bridal and event specialist, books trials four to six weeks out from the date, plans hair around the photography style and the dress shape, and comes to your prep venue on the morning if you want her to. The Como House brief tends toward romantic and polished; Leonda runs classic and timeless. We have done both for years. See the Bridal page for the full process.
Hair Treatments
Every colour service at Kohort includes a bond-building treatment as standard. The Kérastase Fusio Dose Ritual is our signature shine-and-nourishment add-on. K18 Molecular Repair is non-negotiable on lifted hair. L'Oréal Metal Detox clears the metal particles in Melbourne tap water that sabotage signature blonde. Olaplex protects through multiple lighten-and-tone processes. Bhave for smoothing. Full Hair Treatment menu.
Keratin Smoothing and Nanoplasty
For Toorak clients who want frizz-free hair through summer, a reset before Spring Racing, or a smoother finish before a wedding or event, Keratin Smoothing and Nanoplasty are regular bookings. Keratin gives three to four months of smoother hair. Nanoplasty is the gentler, formaldehyde-free option for clients whose hair has been through enough colour. Both cut morning styling time almost in half.
Men's Cuts for the Collins Street Crowd
Plenty of Toorak partners book tailored scissor cuts with discreet skin fades, classic maintenance cuts, grey blending and beard trims. Our men's clientele includes Collins Street partners, GPs, specialists and senior executives who value a proper cut done at a reasonable pace. A men's cut at Kohort runs forty-five minutes to an hour. Maintenance is usually booked at six weeks.

Why Toorak Clients Choose Kohort
Toorak Village has salons. Chapel Street has salons. South Yarra has salons. So why do Toorak locals cross the river for a Bridge Road appointment?
The co-working model is the first answer. Kohort is not a chain. Every stylist is an independent practitioner who owns their chair, sets their pricing, and runs their own business. There is no salon manager chasing retail targets, no rotating junior, no handover halfway through the appointment. The person who consulted with you is the person who finishes you. For Toorak clients who value continuity, relationship and discretion, the model matches the brief.
The second answer is the specialist mix. Signature blonde specialist, grey-coverage specialist, bridal and event specialist, editorial cutter, short-hair expert. Seven stylists with distinct strengths lets you match the chair to the brief. For a client who is booking different stylists for everyday maintenance and for a Melbourne Cup blow-dry, the studio lets you do both without leaving the building.
The third answer is no-upsell culture. Kohort does not run daily retail targets. Our stylists recommend the one or two products that match what was done in the chair rather than pushing a basket. For Toorak clients who have spent years being upsold and are tired of it, the restraint is noticeable and welcome.
The fourth answer is the pace of the studio. Kohort is designed as a calm space rather than a high-volume salon. Natural light, quiet music, no ammonia cloud, no constantly ringing phone, no rushed chair. For a Toorak regular who has been getting hair done for twenty or thirty years, the difference is felt in the first ten minutes.
The fifth answer is product integrity. Kérastase, Davines, Olaplex, K18, L'Oréal Metal Detox and Bhave all live on the retail wall. For the Toorak signature blonde, that product ecosystem is non-negotiable, and it sits in our retail exactly the way it should.
The sixth answer is discretion. Toorak clients value privacy. Kohort runs a calm, quiet studio where you are not being asked where you are going on holidays or what your partner does for a living. If you want to chat, we chat. If you want to read your phone or close your eyes for two hours, that is equally fine.
Landmarks & Life in Toorak
Toorak is anchored by two village strips. Toorak Village, running along Toorak Road between Grange Road and Williams Road, is the flagship retail and dining precinct. European bakeries, boutique retail, florists, a Leo's Fine Food where you can spend $300 on dinner ingredients without thinking about it, tailored menswear, and the cafes and bistros that have been Toorak institutions for decades. Hawksburn Village, on Malvern Road at the western end of the suburb, runs a slightly quieter village character with its own loyal locals, excellent cafes and long-running delicatessens.
Private schools shape a significant portion of Toorak's social and economic life. St Catherine's School, Geelong Grammar Toorak campus, and the catchment for Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar across the river drive the school-mum calendar, the formal season and a significant share of our Toorak bridal pipeline. Year 12 formal season in spring is a busy window.
Como House on the South Yarra and Toorak border is one of Melbourne's grand heritage properties and a significant wedding and event venue. Leonda By The Yarra, just across in Hawthorn, runs the same bridal rhythm. Between them, they host a significant share of Melbourne's society weddings, and we book styling for both almost every summer weekend.
Kooyong Tennis Club on the eastern edge runs the Kooyong Classic in January as the lead-in to the Australian Open, and Australian Open week brings a styling rhythm that runs from Kooyong through the main tournament at Melbourne Park. Plenty of our Toorak regulars book hair around their Kooyong or Rod Laver Arena attendance.
Spring Racing Carnival is the peak Toorak cultural event. Caulfield Cup mid-October, Melbourne Cup first Tuesday of November, Derby Day, Oaks Day, Stakes Day, and Ballarat Cup across the spring. Flemington trackside styling, Members Enclosure hair, lawn blow-dries and the whole Spring Racing calendar generate a six to eight week window of intense Toorak styling demand every year. We book out in September. Plan accordingly.
Toorak borders South Yarra to the west, Armadale to the east, Malvern to the south, and shares a close cultural thread with Hawthorn across the river. All four pattern into similar booking rhythms at Kohort, with Toorak typically running the highest spend on signature blonde maintenance, event styling and Spring Racing work.
