What Is a Haircut at KOHORT?
A haircut at Kohort is not a standard off-the-rack service. It is a considered, consultation-first appointment where your stylist assesses your hair dry, in natural light, before a single shear touches a strand. We want to know how you part your hair, where it grows from, how much density you have, where the cowlicks sit, whether your hair is fine or coarse, how often you style with heat, how often you wear it up, and what you hate about the last cut you had. Every one of those answers changes the shape we choose to build.
Cutting is the foundation of everything we do. Colour can be stunning, but if the shape underneath is wrong, the colour will not land. A great cut means hair that looks as good air-dried on day four as it does blow-dried on day one. It means the fringe falls where it should. It means the layers frame your face rather than fight it. Richmond locals who have bounced between salons for years often tell us the Kohort cut is the first one that actually grew out the way they hoped, because we plan for growth at the chair.
The Kohort cutting book spans everything from precision classic bobs through to editorial shags, razor-cut wolf cuts, short pixies, soft long layers and gender-neutral crops. Our stylists come from different cutting lineages, so the same suburb, the same brief, can be executed completely differently depending on who you book with. That is the point of a co-working salon. Richmond has room for many kinds of excellent. You pick the hand that speaks your language.
Face shape matters, but it is only one input. A square jaw can carry a blunt bob or a curtain-fringed shag. A round face can carry a bixie or long layers without fringe. An oval face opens the widest range of options. We read face shape alongside hairline, neck length, ear position, shoulder height, glasses, and what you wear day to day. Cutting to face shape alone produces technically correct hair that still does not feel like you.
How KOHORT Approaches Cutting
Every Kohort cut starts with a dry consultation. Wet hair lies about length, weight and movement. Dry hair tells the truth. Your stylist combs through, checks how your hair falls naturally, identifies where it wants to sit, and only then discusses the look you are chasing. If what you are asking for will not work with your density, parting or growth pattern, we will say so at the consultation, not after the cut.
Dry cutting is used heavily through our cutting book. A dry cut is cutting hair in its natural dry state, reading the hair as it moves, and removing weight exactly where the weight is showing. It is the technique that produces those lived-in shags, soft textured bobs, and effortless long layers that look like you rolled out of bed styled. Dry cutting also suits curls and waves perfectly because you are cutting the curl as it actually sits, not stretched flat and wet.
Razor cutting is another technique you will see in Kohort chairs, particularly with Billie, Zoe and Taylah. A razor produces a softer, more feathered edge than shears. It is the technique behind the Sal Salcedo and Evan Joseph-style soft shags that inner-north and inner-south fashion clients come to us for. Razor work requires healthy hair, and it is not right for every strand type, which is why consultation always comes first.
Point cutting, also called chipping, is how we soften a blunt line without losing the shape. You will see point cutting used on bobs, lobs, long layers and any cut where the perimeter needs to read as intentional but not rigid. Combined with weight removal inside the shape, point cutting is what separates a salon-sharp cut from a cut that looks like a haircut, if that makes sense.
Japanese shears are the standard across our cutting book. Sheree, Zoe, Billie and Taylah cut primarily with Japanese steel. Japanese shears hold an edge longer, cut cleaner, and create less damage at the ends than cheaper European or Chinese blanks. The difference shows up weeks later when the ends have not frayed the way they do after a blunt shear cut.
The co-working model at Kohort changes how a cutting appointment feels. Each stylist runs their own book, sets their own pace, and owns the full service from consultation through finishing. That means a cut at Kohort is not fifteen rushed minutes between colour clients. It is the full attention of your cutter for the time the cut actually needs.
Finishing is part of the cut, not an afterthought. Every cut ends with a proper blow dry or styled finish, a retail conversation if relevant, and an honest rebook recommendation. If your cut is going to need a six-week tidy to hold its shape, your stylist will say so. If it can stretch to twelve weeks, they will say that too.

Sheree, Pixie, Short Hair and Precision Cutting

Sheree is the cutter to book if you want a pixie that actually suits your face, a cropped bob that sits correctly through the nape, or a precision long layer cut that reads expensive. Billie, Creative, Razor and Editorial Cutting
Thirty years of industry experience and a razor that has built half the best shags in Richmond. Billie is the cutter for anything with texture, movement, or editorial reference. Mullets, wolf cuts, razor bobs, disconnected pixies. Currently welcoming existing clients only. Book with Billie.

Haircut Process, What to Expect
1. Consultation
Your stylist looks at your hair dry, asks about your daily styling routine, and agrees a shape that works with your hair, not against it.
2. Wash and Scalp Ritual
Most cuts include a wash with products suited to your hair type. If you are booked in for a Kohort Scalp Ritual, this is where it happens.
3. Cutting
The actual cut. Depending on the shape, this may be cut wet, dry, or a combination of both. Razor work, point cutting, weight removal and disconnection are used as the shape calls for.
4. Dry and Refine
Your stylist dries the hair and refines the shape. This is the stage where the finer weight removal and detailing happens, because you can only see the truth of a cut once it is dry and moving.
5. Finishing
Blow dry, style, retail recommendations, and a realistic rebook window.
Haircut Pricing at KOHORT
Cut pricing at Kohort varies by stylist and by cut type. As a guide, classic cuts typically start from around $95 for shorter hair and $120 to $170 for longer hair. Precision bobs, shags, mullets and pixies sit in a similar range depending on who you book with. Restyle cuts, where significant length or shape is changing, are priced higher because they take longer to plan and execute.
Each stylist sets their own rates under the co-working model. Sheree, Billie, Zoe and Sheridan all price their own books, so a senior specialist rate will differ from an apprentice rate with Grace. That transparency is part of the point of how Kohort runs. You pay the cutter you book, at the rate they set, for the time the cut needs.
We do not hide pricing at consultation. If you want a precise number before booking, email salon@kohort.com.au with a photo and a brief of what you are chasing, and we will come back with a quote and a stylist recommendation.
Aftercare for Your Haircut
A good cut is only half the job. Aftercare is what keeps the shape honest between appointments. The rules are straightforward.
Wash less. Most hair types do not need daily washing. Two to three times a week is ideal for most guests, with dry shampoo or a gentle refresh rinse between.
Heat protect every time. No exceptions. A heat protectant before a hairdryer, a curling wand or a straightener is the single biggest thing you can do to keep your ends looking like they did the day you left the chair.
Use the right styling products for your shape. A blunt bob wants a light smoothing cream or serum. A textured shag wants a salt spray, a texturising paste, or a sea-salt mousse. Your stylist will point you to the right product from our Kérastase, Davines and K18 retail shelf.
Book your rebook window honestly. Pixies and short bobs need trimming every four to six weeks. Mid-length shags and bobs typically hold for eight to ten weeks. Long layers can stretch to ten or twelve weeks. Booking your trim before the shape collapses is the difference between a cut that lives for four months and a cut you feel like you need to restart.
Treat dry ends early. A weekly mask with K18, Kérastase or Davines keeps the perimeter of your cut looking crisp. Dry ends are the single fastest way to make a good cut look tired.
If your cut includes a fringe, expect a fringe trim every three to four weeks. Most Kohort stylists will do a fringe tidy between main appointments at no extra charge for existing clients. Ask at booking.
Who a KOHORT Haircut Is Ideal For
You will love a Kohort cut if you care about how your hair grows out as much as how it looks leaving the salon. Our cutting book is built for guests who want shape, movement, and longevity, not just a cut that photographs well on day one. Cremorne tech workers book our cuts for the precision. Fitzroy and Collingwood creatives book for the editorial references. Toorak and Kew regulars book for the polish and the discretion.
Kohort also suits guests who have been told their hair is difficult. Fine hair, thick coarse hair, cowlicks, double crowns, awkward partings, grown-out bangs. These are the briefs our cutters enjoy most, because the problem-solving is where a great cut actually lives.
A Kohort cut may not be right if you want the fastest possible ten-minute trim with no conversation. Our cutting culture is consultation-heavy by design.
Haircuts for Clients Across Inner Melbourne
Our cutting book pulls from every inner Melbourne suburb. Richmond locals walk in from the Bridge Road apartments, the Cremorne tech precinct and the Burnley riverside streets, often booking lunchtime cuts between meetings. Cremorne clients in particular love the co-working model because it mirrors the way they work.
From the north, Fitzroy and Collingwood guests bring the most adventurous cutting briefs in the book. Smith Street and Gertrude Street regulars book Billie and Zoe for mullets, shags, wolf cuts and disconnected pixies. Fitzroy North and Carlton North guests lean softer and more natural, often booking long layers, soft bobs and grown-out fringe tidies. Clifton Hill, Northcote and Fairfield guests come down High Street for lived-in, textured cuts paired with their copper and brunette colour work.
From south of the river, South Yarra and Toorak clients cross Punt Road for their signature bob maintenance and polished long layer cuts. Prahran and Windsor guests lean bolder, often booking creative cuts with fashion colour built in. Chapel Street retail and hospitality staff book cuts that photograph well for the brands they work with.
From the east, Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell, Balwyn and Hawthorn East clients come in for refined, classic cutting. Boroondara briefs tend toward invisible grey coverage paired with a soft long layer, or a seamless bob that does not shout. Many of these guests book four or five times a year and stay loyal for years.
Carlton and Carlton North clients bring academic and professional briefs. Abbotsford guests from the Convent arts pocket request creative cuts with considered references. East Melbourne clients closer to the MCG and Fitzroy Gardens book polished bobs and refined long layers. St Kilda clients mix beach-friendly cuts with fashion work for the arts and hospitality scene. Melbourne CBD apartment-belt clients often book longer Friday afternoon cuts paired with a keratin finish for corporate-ready polish.
No matter which suburb you are coming from, Kohort is fifteen minutes or less by car, tram or train from most of inner Melbourne.

Most cuts take between sixty and ninety minutes, including consultation, wash, cut and blow dry. Restyle cuts and longer hair may run longer. Your stylist will confirm timing at booking.
Do I need a consultation before booking a first haircut?
For a restyle or first appointment, we recommend a fifteen minute in-salon consultation beforehand so your stylist can plan properly. For standard cuts, booking directly is fine.
How often should I book a haircut?
Pixies and short bobs every four to six weeks. Mid-length bobs and shags every eight to ten weeks. Long layers every ten to twelve weeks. Your stylist will give you a specific rebook window at the chair.
Do you offer dry cutting?
Yes. Dry cutting is used heavily across our cutting book, particularly for shags, bobs, long layers and curly hair.
Do you cut curly hair?
Yes. Several of our stylists cut curly hair dry, reading each curl in its natural state. Book a consultation if your hair is very textured so we can match you with the right cutter.
Do you offer fringe trims?
Yes. Existing clients can typically book a fringe tidy between main appointments at no extra charge. Ask your stylist at booking.
How much does a haircut cost at Kohort?
From around $95 for shorter hair and $120 to $170 for longer hair. Each stylist sets their own rate. Restyle cuts are priced separately.
Can I combine a cut with colour?
Yes, most of our stylists offer combined bookings. If you are doing colour and cut in the same appointment, the cut usually happens after the colour so the shape flatters the placement.
Which stylist should I book for my first cut?
Depends on the cut. For pixies and short hair, Sheree. For creative, editorial or razor work, Billie. For bobs and modern shapes, Zoe. For long polished finishes, Elodie. For soft lived-in work, Sheridan. If unsure, email salon@kohort.com.au.

Do you do children's haircuts?
Selected stylists do. Please email ahead to confirm availability and pricing.
