What Are Full Head Foils?

Full head foils are the most comprehensive foil highlight service on the menu. Every section of the hair, from the nape to the crown to the hairline, is sectioned, woven and foiled. The result is uniform, high-impact lightness through the entire head rather than the softer, partial coverage you get with half head foils, babylights or balayage. When guests want a head of bright, photo-ready blonde from root to tip, full head foils are the service that delivers it.

Full head foils are the right call when you want total coverage. If your goal is to go fully blonde, to dramatically lift your natural base level, or to create high-impact dimension across every section, foils across the full head give your colourist the control to deliver that. Lightener is packed into each foil and held tight against the hair, allowing the colourist to control heat, processing time and final lift in a way that painterly techniques like balayage simply do not permit.

A full head foil service typically takes three to four and a half hours at Kohort, depending on hair length, density and whether the service is paired with a cut or treatment. Foil count varies by density. Fine-to-medium density might sit between 80 and 120 foils. Thick, dense or waist-length hair may run between 120 and 180 foils. Every foil is woven, placed and wrapped by hand.

Full head foils differ from half head foils in scope. A half head covers the top, crown and face framing sections only, for brightness where it shows. Full head foils extend that coverage all the way to the nape, the under-layers and the hairline. The two services are not interchangeable. A half head will not deliver the uniform brightness that full head foils produce, and a full head is more work than half head clients often need.

Full head foils also differ from balayage in technique and finish. Balayage paints lightener onto the surface of the hair freehand, producing a softer, more natural sweep. Foils produce a cleaner, brighter and more uniform lift. The two techniques can be combined in a service called foilayage, which blends foil brightness in the top sections with balayage painting through the mid-lengths and ends. For guests who love the brightness of foils but want softer grow-out, foilayage is a genuinely excellent service, and Taylah and Zoe both offer it.

Related services include half head foils, highlights, balayage, lived-in blonde and colour correction.

How KOHORT Approaches Full Head Foils

Full head foils at Kohort are treated as high-precision design work. A full head foil service is your colourist's most technical lightening service, and the level of attention it demands is the reason we price it at a premium and schedule it with generous time buffers. Nothing about a full head foil service is rushed.

Your colourist begins with consultation. For a first full head foil with us, that is usually a free fifteen-minute in-salon appointment before the service itself. Your colour history is reviewed, your goal shade is confirmed, a weave plan is sketched out in your colourist's head, and bond support is planned based on the condition of your hair on the day.

Bond support is built into every full head foil service at Kohort. Before lightener is packed, our colourists almost always apply L'Oréal Metal Detox if there is any previous colour or mineral history. Metal Detox is the pre-colour step that neutralises metal particles trapped in the cortex from tap water, box dye and previous foil services. Skipping this step is one of the most common causes of brassy regrowth, uneven lift and snapped ends on repeat foil clients.

During lift, Olaplex Bonding Treatment or K18 Molecular Repair is woven into the lightener. Olaplex rebuilds the disulphide bonds that lightener breaks. K18 uses a bioactive peptide that reconnects keratin chains at the cortex. For full head foil clients these treatments are not optional. A foil service without bond support is a foil service that will compromise integrity, full stop. For guests with heavy mineral or metallic build-up, an Olaplex Chelating Treatment is added before the service as a purifying step to give lightener the cleanest canvas possible.

Weave density is determined by the look. Tight weaves produce a soft, blended finish like babylights. Wider weaves produce a brighter, more defined dimension. Your colourist will decide based on your face shape, your parting, and how you wear your hair styled. A good full head foil service is not foiled on a formula. It is foiled as a plan.

Toning is where an average foil service becomes a great one. Our colourists tone based on your skin tone, eye colour, natural base level and the final shade you are chasing. Cool ash for pale cool skin. Beige or neutral for mid tones. Warmer honey for olive or warm skin. Over-toning creates a flat grey. Under-toning leaves hair yellow. Our colourists typically spend ten to twenty minutes on tone every appointment, and this is genuinely where the final result is made.

The Kohort co-working model changes the pace of a full head foil appointment. Each colourist books their own clients with their own time buffer built in. A four-hour full head foil at Kohort is genuinely four hours of your colourist's attention, not four hours of being rotated between chairs, shampoo bowls and a finisher. One colourist, one service, one result.

Finishing is non-negotiable. Every full head foil at Kohort closes with a Kérastase Fusio Dose Ritual or a Davines Liquid Luster gloss. Fusio Dose deposits concentrated actives that keep the shine reading bright for up to eight washes. Liquid Luster uses lamellar technology to coat the cuticle with a smooth reflective finish. Both leave hair softer, glossier and more photograph-ready. If the service is paired with a cut, the cut happens after the colour so the shape complements the foil placement.

Retail backs the service. Kérastase Blond Absolu for cool blonde tone maintenance, K18 Molecular Repair leave-in for ongoing bond care, Davines Alchemic for tone refresh between appointments, and Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector for weekly at-home bond work. What your colourist recommends is sitting on our retail shelf within arm's reach of the chair.

Full Head Foils Process, What to Expect

1. Consultation

Your colourist reviews your hair dry in natural light, discusses colour history, and confirms the foil density, placement plan and target shade.

2. Preparation

L'Oréal Metal Detox or Olaplex Chelating Treatment for any colour or mineral history. Sectioning is planned around your parting, face frame and cut shape.

3. Foil Application

Your colourist weaves sections across the entire head and wraps each foil by hand. A full head typically runs between 80 and 180 foils depending on density and length.

4. Processing

Foils develop under even heat until lift is at target. Your colourist monitors lift closely because foils move at different rates. Bond support runs through this stage where appropriate.

5. Toning

Lightener is rinsed, a bespoke toner is applied and left to develop for the prescribed time. Final shade is locked in here.

6. Finishing

Kérastase Fusio Dose Ritual or Davines Liquid Luster gloss, blow dry, style, home care conversation, and an honest rebook window.

Full Head Foils Pricing at KOHORT

Full head foil pricing at Kohort varies by colourist, hair length, density and colour history. As a guide, full head foils start from around $350 and run higher for long, dense or heavily pre-coloured hair. Waist-length or very dense hair may sit in the $450 to $550 range. Pricing always includes consultation, toning and a blow-dry finish.

Add-on treatments are priced separately and strongly recommended on full head foil services. K18 Molecular Repair from $50. Olaplex Bonding Treatment from $50. L'Oréal Metal Detox from $45. Kérastase Fusio Dose Ritual at $50. Davines Liquid Luster at $25. Olaplex Chelating Treatment from $50 for heavy mineral load. For frizz-prone or humidity-sensitive hair, a Bhave keratin smoothing finish from $250 adds six to twelve weeks of manageability and protects foiled ends.

Because full head foil pricing scales with length, density and how many foils the look genuinely needs, we do not quote final pricing without seeing the hair. If you want a quote before booking, email salon@kohort.com.au with a photo of your current hair and your reference look, or book a free fifteen-minute in-salon consultation. Every colourist at Kohort is an independent business setting their own rates.

Aftercare for Full Head Foils

Full head foils are a commitment, and aftercare decides whether they hold for four weeks or twelve. The rules are straightforward.

Wash less. Three times a week maximum for full head foiled hair. Every extra wash strips tone and gloss. Dry shampoo is your friend between washes.

Sulphate-free shampoo is non-negotiable. Sulphates strip colour faster than anything else. Kérastase Blond Absolu is our top recommendation for cool foiled blondes. Davines Alchemic and the K18 peptide shampoo both work beautifully on full head foiled hair.

Purple or silver shampoo once a week, left on for three to five minutes. Daily purple shampoo is one of the most common home-care mistakes and it leaves hair looking flat and slightly grey instead of bright.

Heat protect before any hot tool. Every time. Full head foiled ends are more porous than virgin hair and lose moisture faster under heat. A heat protectant is the single fastest way to extend the life of the service.

Weekly mask. K18 Molecular Repair mask, Kérastase Masquintense Blond or Davines NouNou are the three we rotate. K18 is the heaviest repair. Masquintense Blond tones and conditions. NouNou is the deep moisture option.

Chlorine and salt water fade full head foils faster than almost anything else. Before swimming, wet your hair with tap water and apply a leave-in. Rinse immediately after. Weekend beach trips followed by hot showers are the fastest route to brass.

Refresh with a mid-cycle gloss. A Fusio Dose or Liquid Luster gloss at the six to eight week mark can stretch a full head foil service to twelve weeks or beyond. Many of our regulars book only three or four full head foil services a year, and fill the gap with glosses.

Consider a bond-builder at home. Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector is our go-to retail bond builder for full head foil clients. Used once a week before shampoo it keeps internal bond integrity stable between services.

Who Full Head Foils at KOHORT Are Ideal For

Full head foils at Kohort are ideal for guests who want bright, uniform lightness from root to tip and are happy with a four to six week rebook window for the cleanest look. It suits guests who want the brightest version of blonde their hair can sustain, and who prefer the cleaner, more defined finish of foils over the softer, painterly result of balayage.

It suits guests with significant grey who want precise coverage that reads as dimension rather than flat root colour. Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell, East Melbourne, Balwyn and Hawthorn East clients frequently book full head foils for this reason. The foil-and-tone combination is the cleanest way to blend grey into a natural base without the result looking obviously coloured.

Full head foils suit fine, medium, thick, curly and wavy hair types. Technique adapts across each one. For resistant grey, processing times adjust. For fine hair, weave density tightens and bond support increases.

Full head foils may not be the right fit if you want zero visible regrowth line or a no-maintenance grow-out. Balayage is the better service for that brief. They may also not suit if you want to go dramatically lighter from a very dark base in a single sitting, which is usually a colour correction conversation rather than a full head foil one.

Full Head Foils for Clients Across Inner Melbourne

Our full head foil book pulls from every inner Melbourne suburb. Richmond locals come in from Bridge Road apartments and the Cremorne tech precinct, often booking a half day off work. Cremorne clients from the SEEK, REA and MYOB offices along Church Street book polished full head foils that read considered under office lighting and on camera calls. Burnley riverside guests lean toward the softer end of the full head foil spectrum, often paired with long layered cuts that hold up well under a helmet on the Yarra trail.

From south of the river, South Yarra and Toorak clients cross Punt Road for signature full head foils with grey coverage baked in, typically booking every five to six weeks. Chapel Street retail and hospitality staff from Prahran and Windsor book full head foils that stay photograph-ready through double shifts. Prahran clients often pair the service with a creative accent. Windsor clients lean into cooler, more fashion-forward full head foil work.

From the north, Fitzroy and Fitzroy North guests book full head foils with an artistic lean. Sharper brightness, bolder contrast, editorial toning, and creative foil work on shorter cuts. Collingwood regulars come across from Smith Street, Gertrude Street and the Collingwood Yards precinct for full head foils that read bright without reading suburban. Northcote and Fairfield guests come down High Street and Heidelberg Road for softer full head foils with a copper or warm honey lean. Clifton Hill and Alphington guests book gentler full head foil placements with subtle grey blending.

From the east, Hawthorn, Hawthorn East, Kew, Camberwell and Balwyn clients are the heart of our refined classic full head foil book. The Boroondara brief is typically about invisible grey coverage, polished toning, healthy-looking finishing and longevity. Many book a full head foil three or four times a year with a mid-cycle gloss between. Balwyn clients in particular bring a strong formal and bridal season demand thanks to Balwyn High and the private school catchment.

Carlton and Carlton North clients, many from the University of Melbourne academic community, book softer natural full head foil briefs. Abbotsford guests from the Convent arts pocket request warm full head foils with a copper or honey lean. East Melbourne clients closer to the MCG, Fitzroy Gardens and St Patrick's Cathedral book refined full head foils suited to Parliament and Collins Street professional life. St Kilda clients mix beach-friendly full head foils with fashion toning for the arts and hospitality scene, often paired with a humidity-safe keratin smoothing finish. Melbourne CBD apartment-belt clients usually book longer Friday afternoon full head foil slots, often paired with a smoothing finish for corporate polish.

No matter which suburb you are coming from, Kohort is fifteen minutes or less by car, tram or train from most of inner Melbourne.

Frequently Asked Questions About Full Head Foils at KOHORT

What is the difference between full head foils and half head foils?

Full head foils cover every section of the head from root to tip, including the nape and under-layers, for uniform brightness. Half head foils cover only the top, crown and face framing sections for brightness where it shows. Full head takes longer and costs more.

How long does a full head foil appointment take?

Three to four and a half hours, depending on hair length, density and whether a cut or treatment is paired with the service.

How many foils are in a full head?

Between 80 and 180, depending on density and length. Your colourist decides foil count based on the brief and the hair.

How often should I book full head foils?

Every four to six weeks for the brightest result. Six to eight weeks if the hair is in good condition and tone holds well. Mid-cycle glosses extend the window.

Will full head foils cover my grey?

Yes. Foil highlights blend grey effectively when placement targets the greyest sections. For very resistant grey, your colourist may add root application alongside the foils.

Do full head foils damage hair?

All lightening services have an impact. With pre-colour L'Oréal Metal Detox, bond support through the service with Olaplex or K18, proper finishing and good home care, damage is minimised.

How much do full head foils cost at Kohort?

From around $350, higher for long, dense or heavily pre-coloured hair. Add-on treatments from $25 to $50. Precise pricing at consultation.

Can I get full head foils on short hair?

Yes. Sheree and Billie both specialise in full head foils on short hair, pixies and bobs. Placement adjusts but the service works.

Can I get full head foils on previously dyed hair?

Usually yes. L'Oréal Metal Detox is almost always added for previously coloured hair. Heavy box dye histories may need a correction session first.

Can I combine full head foils with balayage?

Yes. The combined technique is called foilayage. Taylah and Zoe both offer it as part of their regular service.

Is full head foils the right service for going platinum?

It depends on your starting point. Lighter bases can reach platinum in one full head foil session with careful bond support. Darker bases usually require two or three sessions spaced across months, sometimes as a colour correction plan.

Which stylist should I book for full head foils?

For bright photo-ready results, book Taylah or Zoe. For soft natural finish, book Sheridan or Grace. For short hair, book Sheree. For creative placement, book Billie. If unsure, email salon@kohort.com.au and we will match you.

Where is Kohort and how do I get there?
