What Is a K18 Treatment?
K18 is a professional in-salon molecular repair treatment built around a patented peptide, K18PEPTIDE, that travels deep into the hair's inner structure and reconnects broken keratin chains. The word biomimetic describes what makes K18 different. Its active ingredient mimics the natural keratin structure of your hair, which allows it to bond back together polypeptide chains that have been broken by colour, lightening, chemical services, heat styling and long-term wear.
At Kohort, K18 Molecular Repair starts from $50 per our treatment menu. It is one of our most-requested add-on services for colour clients, particularly blondes. The treatment delivers a visible result on the day, strengthening the hair, restoring elasticity, and leaving a refined satin-smooth finish. For hair that has been lifted repeatedly, the transformation in a single in-salon K18 service is often dramatic.
What makes K18 distinct from older-generation bond builders is the speed and depth of its action. The peptide works in under four minutes once applied. It does not need long processing, and it does not require rinsing out. K18 is a leave-in treatment, meaning the active peptide continues to work inside the hair shaft as you leave the salon. For stylists, this changes the workflow entirely. For clients, it means you can walk out of your appointment with the treatment still actively repairing bonds on your commute home.
K18 sits alongside Olaplex in our bonding tier at Kohort. The two treatments use different chemistry to achieve overlapping goals. Olaplex targets disulphide bond repair in the cuticle. K18 uses a peptide to reconnect keratin chains in the cortex. Some stylists prefer one. Some prefer the other. Many clients layer both for maximum bond support across a single service.
K18 is described in our treatment menu as a must-have for blondes, and that is not marketing language. For anyone who lightens regularly, K18 is genuinely one of the most impactful hair investments available. The difference between a blonde who uses K18 consistently and one who does not shows up over three to six months as strength, elasticity and ends condition.
The home-care version of K18, the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mist, is the single most-requested take-home product on our retail shelf. Used once every four to six shampoos, it meaningfully extends the effect of in-salon treatments and keeps hair resilient between appointments.
How KOHORT Approaches K18 Treatments
K18 at Kohort is prescribed based on what the hair needs on the day, not sold as a default upsell. Our stylists use K18 most commonly through colour, lift and balayage services, and as a standalone treatment for clients with significant damage, long colour history, or heat-compromised ends.
The K18 in-salon protocol at Kohort is straightforward and efficient. After a colour or lift service is rinsed, the K18 PRO Molecular Repair Hair Mask is applied through damp hair from mid-lengths to ends. The mask is left on for four minutes with no processing equipment required. The peptide works at the molecular level during those four minutes, travelling into the hair cortex and reconnecting broken polypeptide chains. The hair is then styled without rinsing, because K18 is a leave-in treatment.
For clients with significant damage, a dual-layer K18 protocol is often recommended. This involves applying the K18 mask after the initial rinse, then applying the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mist before styling. The combined action delivers sustained repair across the following days.
For blondes and regular lifters, K18 is frequently layered with Olaplex Bonding in the same service. The Olaplex goes in during the lightening process to protect disulphide bonds. The K18 goes in after the rinse to repair keratin chains. The two work on different structural elements of the hair and are genuinely complementary rather than competing.
For clients booking K18 as a standalone appointment without colour work, we ask that you also book a blow wave so your hair is shampooed, treated, dried and styled properly. Standalone K18 without finishing styling does not deliver the full visible result that makes the service so powerful.
Before K18 is applied, the hair canvas matters. If there is significant mineral build-up, product residue, or metal contamination inside the hair, we often recommend a L'Oréal Metal Detox from $45 or an Olaplex Chelating Treatment from $50 beforehand. A clean canvas lets the K18 peptide reach its target sites without interference.
At the end of the service, K18 pairs well with a Kérastase Fusio Dose Ritual at $50 or a Davines Liquid Luster at $25 for a shine and moisture finish. K18 focuses on internal repair. Fusio Dose and Liquid Luster bring the surface gloss. Together they deliver the full package.
All of our stylists at Kohort are trained on K18 and prescribe it routinely. Zoe, Taylah and Sheree are among the heaviest K18 bookers by volume because their books skew heavily toward colour and lift work. Elodie uses K18 as part of her glass-hair finishing protocol for clients booking nanoplasty smoothing. Grace, as our keratin smoothing specialist, often builds K18 into pre-smoothing and post-smoothing protocols on previously lightened hair.

K18 Treatment Process, What to Expect
1. Consultation
Your stylist looks at your hair dry, checks porosity and elasticity, asks about colour history and home routine, and recommends a K18 protocol.
2. Preparation
For K18 layered into a colour service, hair is coloured first and the K18 is applied after the rinse. For standalone K18 treatments, hair is shampooed first, then K18 mask is applied to damp hair.
3. K18 Application
K18 PRO Molecular Repair Hair Mask is applied evenly through mid-lengths and ends. The peptide is activated immediately on contact.
4. Processing
Four minutes. That is the complete processing time. No heat, no foils, no processing equipment. The peptide works at the molecular level during this window.
5. Style Without Rinsing
K18 is a leave-in treatment. Hair is styled directly without rinsing the K18 out. The peptide continues to work inside the hair shaft as you leave the salon.
6. Home Care Brief
Your stylist walks you through the K18 home-care range, including the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mist and the K18 peptide shampoo. Used once every four to six shampoos, home K18 extends the in-salon effect meaningfully.
K18 Treatment Pricing at KOHORT
K18 Molecular Repair at Kohort is priced from $50 per our treatment menu. That baseline covers a standard in-salon K18 application as an add-on to a colour, cut or standalone service.
For clients with significant damage where a dual-layer K18 protocol is recommended, pricing may be quoted higher at consultation. Multi-stage bond protocols combining K18 and Olaplex are typically priced between $80 and $120 depending on hair length and treatment scope.
Add-on and complementary treatments are priced separately. L'Oréal Metal Detox from $45. Olaplex Chelating Treatment from $50. Olaplex Bonding from $50. Kérastase Fusio Dose at $50. Davines Liquid Luster at $25.
If you want a precise quote before booking, email salon@kohort.com.au with a photo of your hair and a short description of what you want to address, and we will confirm pricing.
Aftercare for K18 Treatments
K18 aftercare is about extending the in-salon effect with a compatible home routine.
Use the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mist at home, once every four to six shampoos. Apply to damp, clean hair from mid-lengths to ends, leave it in, and style as normal. This is the single most impactful home-care step for maintaining the in-salon K18 result.
Use a sulphate-free, sodium-chloride-free shampoo and conditioner. The K18 peptide shampoo is a strong option if you want to fully commit to the K18 system. Kérastase Blond Absolu, Davines Love and Olaplex No 4 are also strong matches.
Wash less. Three times a week is ideal. Every additional wash gradually strips any in-salon treatment and shortens the benefit period.
Heat protect before any hot tool. K18-treated hair is stronger, but it still benefits significantly from heat protection.
Rebook an in-salon K18 service every six to eight weeks, typically aligned with your colour refresh. For clients in active damage recovery, more frequent protocols may be recommended.
For blondes, layer K18 with Olaplex and a weekly home Olaplex No 3 for the strongest recovery and maintenance routine available.
Avoid chlorinated pools and salt water where possible. When swimming, wet hair with tap water first, apply a leave-in conditioner, and rinse immediately on exit. A K18 mist applied after swimming and showering is an excellent same-day repair step.
Who K18 Treatments Are Ideal For
K18 at Kohort is ideal for blondes, for anyone who lightens regularly, for clients with significant colour history, for hair recovering from box dye or chemical damage, for heat-styling regulars, for anyone with brittle or snapping ends, and for clients who want to genuinely feel a difference in their hair after one appointment.
Blondes are the single biggest K18 demographic for a reason. Lift is the most structurally demanding service hair undergoes, and K18 is the most advanced biomimetic repair treatment on the professional market. If you lighten your hair two or more times a year, K18 is a genuine investment in long-term hair integrity.
Clients with curly or coily hair recovering from heat styling, chemical treatments or repeated colour work respond strongly to K18. The elasticity restoration in particular helps curl shape memory and definition return.
K18 is also strongly recommended for clients booking keratin smoothing or nanoplasty on previously lightened hair. Using K18 before and after a smoothing service protects the hair through the chemistry and extends the smoothing lifespan.
K18 may not be the top recommendation for hair with no colour history, no damage and minimal heat exposure. In those cases, moisture and shine treatments like Kérastase Fusio Dose or Davines Liquid Luster may be more relevant first-line picks. Your stylist will prescribe accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions About K18 Treatments at KOHORT
What does K18 actually do?
K18 uses a patented biomimetic peptide, K18PEPTIDE, that travels into the hair cortex and reconnects broken keratin chains. The result is restored strength, elasticity and a satin-smooth finish.
How does K18 compare to Olaplex?
Both are bonding treatments but they use different chemistry. K18 targets keratin chain repair in the cortex using a peptide. Olaplex targets disulphide bond repair in the cuticle. Many clients layer both in the same service for maximum bond support.
How long does a K18 treatment take?
Four minutes of processing time, plus consultation, application and finishing style. When added to a colour service, K18 adds very little extra time to the overall appointment.
Do I need to rinse K18 out?
No. K18 is a leave-in treatment. The peptide continues to work inside the hair as you leave the salon.
How much does K18 cost?
From $50 per our treatment menu. Multi-stage protocols combining K18 with Olaplex typically range from $80 to $120 depending on hair length and scope.
How often should I book K18?
Every six to eight weeks is ideal, typically aligned with your colour refresh. For clients in active damage recovery, more frequent protocols may be recommended.
Is K18 safe for colour-treated hair?
Yes. K18 is specifically designed for colour-treated, lightened and chemically processed hair. It is one of the strongest recovery options available for that exact demographic.
Can I use K18 at home?
Yes. The K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mist is available on our retail shelf and is the home-care counterpart of the in-salon treatment. Use once every four to six shampoos.
Is K18 safe for curly hair?
Yes. K18 repairs internal bond structure without affecting curl pattern. Many curly-hair clients find K18 meaningfully improves their curl shape memory and elasticity.
Can I combine K18 with Olaplex?
Yes. Many clients layer both in the same service. Olaplex goes in during the colour process. K18 goes in after the rinse.
Does K18 repair split ends?
K18 rebuilds internal bonds, which improves hair integrity and reduces future breakage. It cannot reseal ends that have already split, but it meaningfully reduces new splitting when used consistently.
Which stylist should I book for K18?
All of our stylists use K18 routinely. For complex damage recovery or colour correction paired with K18, Sheree, Zoe or Taylah are strong picks.
Where is Kohort and how do I get there?
234 Bridge Road, Richmond VIC 3121. Burnley and East Richmond stations are eight to ten minutes walk. Tram 48 and 75 run along Bridge Road directly past the door.
Is there parking near the salon?
Yes. Two-hour metered street parking on Bridge Road and free longer parking on residential side streets within a block or two.
