What Is Creative Colour?
Creative colour, sometimes called fashion colour or fantasy colour, is the expressive end of the colour menu. It covers everything that sits outside natural hair tones. Copper, cherry red, rose, silver, smoky violet, pastels, neon, money piece in a fashion shade, peekaboo panels, or full head vivids. It also covers the techniques that enable those looks, including bleach and tone, pre-lighten and deposit, colour melts, and layered tonal work.
Creative colour is not a single service, it is a category. The brief is different for every guest. Some are looking for a subtle accent, like a face-framing copper or a muted rose gold through the ends. Others are after a full commitment to a single fashion shade from root to tip. Some are chasing editorial work with multiple colours blended through one head. Others want a specific tone that matches a moodboard. All of these are creative colour.
The reason creative colour is a specialty rather than a standard service is because the execution is different. Fashion colours sit on the surface of the cuticle rather than deep inside the cortex, which means they fade faster, shift during wear, and need different aftercare. Getting them to look good on day one is the easy part. Getting them to still look good on day thirty requires technical knowledge most salons do not have.
At Kohort, creative colour is handled by the four colourists who have chosen to make it part of their specialty. Billie, with thirty years of industry experience and a sharp artistic eye. Sheree, with twenty plus years and a particular skill for creative colour on short hair. Zoe, with a precision approach that brings cooler, editorial-style creative shades into the studio. And Taylah, whose bright, fashion-forward eye makes her a favourite for creative colour blended with bright blonde work.
How KOHORT Approaches Creative Colour
Creative colour at Kohort is built around design, preparation, pigment quality, and realistic expectations. Every brief starts with consultation, and consultation for creative colour is longer and more thorough than for a standard colour service. Your stylist will look at your hair in natural light, review your colour history, check previous dye buildup, and ask about your styling routine and how much maintenance you are prepared for.
Creative colour almost always requires a lightened base. This is where most creative colour services go wrong. A fashion shade deposited over an insufficiently lifted base will not read true. If you have dark hair and want a vivid cherry or a cool silver, we are likely running a pre-lighten step first. Depending on your starting point, this may be a balayage pre-lift, a full bleach, or a targeted panel lift.
Pre-colour preparation matters more here than almost anywhere. L'Oréal Metal Detox is standard before any significant lift. Olaplex Chelating Treatment is used for guests with mineral or metallic buildup. Both protect the integrity of the hair through the lift stage. Olaplex Bonding Treatment and K18 Molecular Repair are used through and after the lift to reconnect and strengthen the internal bonds.
Pigment selection is where creative colour work separates the professional from the amateur. We are selective about the pigment lines we use. The right shade of copper or cherry depends on the undertone of your skin and hair, the starting lift level, and how long you want the shade to last. Cool toned reds fade faster than warm toned reds. Pastels fade faster than saturated jewel tones. Silver fades the fastest of all. Our colourists will tell you the realistic longevity before you commit.
The Kohort co-working model works well for creative colour because each stylist controls their own column and can book the longer timeslots creative work genuinely needs. A three hour creative colour appointment at Kohort is three hours of focused attention, not three hours of being passed around chairs. The studio is calm, private, and suited to the kind of consultation creative colour deserves.
Finishing is always part of the service. Creative colour benefits visibly from a gloss or treatment finish, so most of our creative services end with a Davines Liquid Luster finish or a Kérastase Fusio Dose Ritual depending on the tone. The finish seals the cuticle, boosts colour vibrancy in the first two weeks, and makes the shade photograph better immediately.
Who Performs Creative Colour at KOHORT
Billie, Creative Colour Specialist
Thirty years of experience and an artistic sensibility that makes Billie the first call for adventurous creative colour briefs at Kohort. Warm coppers, cherry tones, soft pastels, bleach and tone on shorter hair, fashion colour on mullets and shags, and creative tone work on razor cuts. Currently welcoming existing clients only. Book with Billie.
Sheree, Creative Colour on Short Hair
With twenty plus years in the industry, Sheree is a go-to for creative colour on pixies, crops, bobs, and shorter bixies. Placement changes significantly on shorter hair and Sheree has refined a technique that works with the cut rather than against it. Book with Sheree.
Zoe, Precision Creative Colour and Money Piece
Zoe brings a precise, editorial approach to creative colour. Money piece, face framing fashion shades, peekaboo panels, and controlled tonal work through specific sections. If your brief needs tight placement and cool precision, Zoe is your colourist. Book with Zoe.
Taylah, Bright Creative Colour and Fashion-Forward Blondes
Taylah brings a bright, contemporary eye to creative colour work. She is the colourist to book for fashion-forward blonde paired with a creative money piece, cool-toned pastels over a pre-lifted base, copper balayage blended into blonde, and warm fashion tones that photograph beautifully in natural light. Book with Taylah.
Creative Colour Process, What to Expect
1. Consultation
Usually booked as a standalone appointment before the service itself. Your stylist looks at your hair, reviews colour history, discusses references, and designs the service. Expect an honest conversation about longevity, maintenance, and any pre-lift sessions needed.
2. Pre-Lift Session (if required)
If your starting point is dark or previously coloured, a pre-lift appointment may be booked before the fashion colour application. This is often a balayage or full bleach service, priced as its own appointment.
3. Pigment Deposit
The actual creative colour application. This is where the fashion shade is deposited onto the lifted base. Processing time varies by tone.
4. Bond and Tone
Bond treatments run through the process. Toning may be used to shift the final shade slightly cooler or warmer.
5. Finishing
Gloss or Fusio Dose for shine. Blow dry and style. Home care conversation. Retail recommendations.
Creative Colour Pricing at KOHORT
Creative colour pricing is more variable than standard colour because the starting point has a significant impact on total cost. As a general guide:
- Single fashion colour deposit on pre-lifted hair: from around $200
- Full creative transformation (lift plus fashion colour): from around $450 to $800 depending on length and density
- Money piece or face framing creative colour: from around $180
- Fashion colour refresh: from around $150
- Peekaboo panels: from around $180
Add-on treatments are priced separately and strongly recommended on lifted hair. K18 Molecular Repair from $50. Olaplex Bonding from $50. L'Oréal Metal Detox from $45. Kérastase Fusio Dose Ritual at $50.
Because pigment and process vary by brief, we genuinely cannot quote creative colour over DM. A free in-salon consultation is the fastest way to get an accurate number. Email salon@kohort.com.au to book.
Aftercare for Creative Colour
Creative colour aftercare is different to standard colour aftercare because fashion shades fade differently. The rules are stricter but the payoff is worth it.
Wash less, much less. Fashion colours fade every time the hair is washed, and the first two weeks are when they bleed the most. Two washes a week is the maximum we recommend in the first fortnight. Three washes a week after that.
Cool water only. Hot water opens the cuticle and lets pigment rinse out. Rinse in the coolest water you can tolerate.
Sulphate free shampoo, always. Sulphates strip fashion colour within a single wash. Davines Alchemic, Kérastase Chroma Absolu, and K18 peptide shampoo are our picks.
Colour depositing conditioner. For vivid shades like cherry, copper, or silver, using a colour depositing conditioner once a week refreshes the tone between appointments. We can match you to a product that matches your tone.
Heat styling reduces longevity. Every hot tool pass shifts fashion pigment slightly. Heat protect always, and go cooler than you think you need to.
UV and chlorine both accelerate fade. UV is particularly hard on cool reds and silvers. If you are outdoors in summer, use a leave-in with UV protection. Before swimming, wet your hair with tap water, apply a leave-in, and rinse immediately after.
Accept that fashion colour is a commitment. The most-loved creative colour clients at Kohort are the ones who have made peace with shorter intervals between appointments. Copper and cherry typically hold for six to eight weeks. Silver, pastels and vivids may need refreshing every four to six weeks.
Our retail shelf carries every product recommended. If your stylist suggests something, it is in stock.
Who Creative Colour at KOHORT Is Ideal For
Creative colour is right for you if you want hair that is intentionally expressive, if you are prepared for more frequent appointments or at-home tone maintenance, and if you want a colourist who takes fashion work seriously rather than treating it as a novelty.
It suits guests across the creative industries in inner Melbourne, from Collingwood and Fitzroy designers to Northcote and Fairfield musicians, Windsor hospitality workers, St Kilda arts scene regulars, and the CBD creative office crowd. It also suits anyone working in industries where creative colour is expected or welcomed, and anyone whose personal style simply wants more than natural hair can offer.
It is not the right fit if you want zero maintenance, if you need to look corporate-neutral for work, or if you are chasing a shade that sits outside what the hair can realistically achieve from your current starting point. We will always tell you the honest limits at consultation.
Creative Colour for Clients Across Inner Melbourne
Creative colour is the service where our geographic reach skews north and south of the river toward the most expressive postcodes. Fitzroy clients lead our creative colour book, booking mullets with copper and cherry tones, micro fringes with bold pigment, silver and bleach-and-tone work, and gender-affirming creative cuts paired with fashion colour. Fitzroy North guests tend to be slightly softer, leaning natural copper or lived-in with a single accent panel.
Collingwood clients from Smith Street, Gertrude Street and Collingwood Yards bring some of the most adventurous briefs we see. Wolf cuts with layered tonal work. Shags with cherry money pieces. Mullets with blended pastels. Northcote and Fairfield clients bring copper, ginger and plant-based colour briefs. Clifton Hill and Abbotsford clients bring warm, artistic creative colour.
Windsor and Prahran clients from the Chapel Street south end book bold creative colour constantly. Silver, vivid pink, bleach and tone short crops, fashion shag colour work. St Kilda arts and hospitality clients bring creative colour tied to personal expression and Pride events. South Yarra and Toorak bring more refined creative work, typically money piece or face framing in a muted copper or rose tone rather than full head fashion.
From the east, creative colour is less common but not absent. Hawthorn, Kew and Camberwell guests occasionally book face framing creative accents, often alongside a signature classic blonde. Boroondara guests are our most restrained creative colour book.
Richmond locals book across the full creative spectrum. Cremorne tech workers occasionally book money piece or peekaboo panels. Burnley riverside guests tend toward natural copper. Carlton, Carlton North and the inner-north student belt bring student-priced creative colour briefs. East Melbourne clients occasionally book creative work for events. Balwyn and Melbourne CBD guests round out the book with a mix of brief types.
Wherever you are coming from, the creative colour book at Kohort is consistently our busiest specialty category across Tuesday to Saturday.
Frequently Asked Questions About Creative Colour at KOHORT
How long does creative colour last?
It depends on the shade. Copper and cherry typically hold for six to eight weeks. Silver, pastels and vivids fade faster, typically four to six weeks. Maintenance shampoos and depositing conditioners extend the window.
Do I need to pre-lift my hair before a fashion colour?
Usually yes if your hair is not already lightened. A dark base will not produce a true fashion shade. Your stylist will decide whether the lift can happen in the same appointment or whether a pre-lift session is needed first.
Does creative colour damage hair?
The lift stage has the biggest impact. Pigment deposit on pre-lifted hair is relatively gentle. With Metal Detox, Olaplex and K18 bond support and careful aftercare, creative colour holds up well.
Can you do creative colour on previously box dyed hair?
Sometimes, depending on the box dye history. A Metal Detox pre-treatment is essential. If the box dye is heavy, a pre-correction step may be needed before any fashion colour can be applied.
How much does creative colour cost?
From around $200 for a single colour deposit on pre-lifted hair, up to $800 for a full transformation from a darker base. Quoted at consultation.
How long does a creative colour appointment take?
Single colour deposit on pre-lifted hair, around two to three hours. Full transformation including lift, four to seven hours, sometimes split across two sessions.
Which stylist should I book for creative colour?
Billie for adventurous creative briefs, Sheree for creative on short hair, Zoe for precision creative work and money piece, Taylah for bright creative colour paired with fashion-forward blonde. Email salon@kohort.com.au if unsure.
Do I need a consultation before booking creative colour?
Yes. A consultation is genuinely required for creative colour. Fifteen to thirty minutes in-salon, free of charge.
How do I keep my creative colour from fading?
Wash less, cool water, sulphate free shampoo, colour depositing conditioner weekly, heat protect every time, avoid UV and chlorine. Your stylist will match you to specific products at your appointment.
Can I switch between fashion shades?
Yes, but switching from one fashion shade to another often requires a colour removal step first. Some shades lift out of the hair easily, others stain. Your stylist will advise at consultation.
Where is Kohort and how do I get there?
234 Bridge Road, Richmond VIC 3121. Burnley and East Richmond train stations are eight to ten minutes walk. Tram 48 and 75 run along Bridge Road directly past the door. From Fitzroy and Collingwood via Hoddle Street, ten minutes. From Windsor and Prahran via Punt Road, ten to fifteen minutes.
Is there parking near the salon?
Yes. Two hour metered parking on Bridge Road and free parking on residential streets one block back.
What is the co-working model at Kohort?
Each stylist runs their chair as an independent business. For you, that means a personal, unhurried appointment with a stylist who owns the outcome.
Can you match a specific reference photo?
Yes, within reason. The honest answer is that reference photos are a starting point, and your stylist will tell you at consultation what is realistic given your hair starting point.
