Kohort Scalp Ritual at Kohort Studio, Exclusive Scalp Massage and Wellness Ritual, Richmond Melbourne
A deeply restorative head massage ritual to melt tension, rebalance the scalp, and wrap you in a moment of pure calm.
A deeply restorative head massage ritual to melt tension, rebalance the scalp, and wrap you in a moment of pure calm.
What Is the Kohort Scalp Ritual?
The Kohort Scalp Ritual is our signature in-salon service, exclusive to our Richmond studio and unavailable anywhere else in Melbourne. It is a deeply restorative head massage ritual designed to do three things at once: melt tension from the scalp, shoulders and neck; rebalance the scalp with a targeted treatment prescribed to your specific scalp needs; and genuinely settle the nervous system. Warm aromatic oils begin the experience. A targeted scalp treatment follows. Slow, intentional massage techniques run throughout.
From $80 per our treatment menu, the Kohort Scalp Ritual sits apart from the rest of our treatment offering. Most of our menu focuses on the hair fibre itself (bond repair, smoothing, shine, colour protection). The Scalp Ritual focuses on the scalp, the foundation from which all hair grows, and on the person sitting in the chair. Clients describe the result as grounded, relaxed and wrapped in calm. It has become one of our most rebooked services, often on a four to six week rhythm that sits alongside regular colour or cut appointments.
The ritual is not a quick scalp massage at the basin. It is a full service with time built in. The aromatic oils are chosen for their scalp and sensory properties. The scalp treatment is selected based on your specific needs, whether that is rebalancing an oily scalp, soothing sensitivity, addressing build-up, calming irritation, or supporting hair follicle health. The massage techniques work deliberately across the scalp, temples, neck and shoulders to release built-up tension and improve circulation.
There is a wellness component to this service that we do not shy away from. Stress, sustained screen time, heavy lifting of young children, long commutes and poor sleep all accumulate in the scalp and upper body. The Kohort Scalp Ritual is specifically designed as a reset, and many of our rebooking clients describe it as their single most important self-care appointment of the month. It sits comfortably alongside massage therapy, physiotherapy or acupuncture in a broader wellness routine.
The Scalp Ritual is available as a standalone service or as an add-on to a colour, cut or treatment appointment. When booked standalone, it typically runs sixty to ninety minutes depending on your stylist and any additional scalp treatment layers. When booked as an add-on, it extends the overall appointment by forty-five to sixty minutes and pairs particularly well with colour services that already have processing time built in.
How KOHORT Approaches the Scalp Ritual
The Kohort Scalp Ritual is approached as a crafted experience rather than a standard service. Each step is considered. The lighting is soft. The conversation is quiet if you want it to be. Warm aromatic oil begins the ritual, applied in slow pours along the hairline and scalp. The oil is not rinsed immediately. It is worked into the scalp with gentle pressure, melting tension before the targeted treatment phase begins.
After the aromatic oil, your stylist selects a targeted scalp treatment product based on the consultation. Scalp concerns vary widely. Some clients are dealing with build-up from product and environmental residue. Some are dealing with dryness and sensitivity. Some are dealing with an oily or congested scalp. Some want to support hair follicle health in a broader hair-thinning concern. The Scalp Ritual treatment layer is prescribed specifically to the need, and we carry a range of scalp treatments from our core professional brands, including targeted Kérastase Specifique and Densifique lines, Davines scalp-specific treatments and Olaplex scalp-focused formulas.
The massage work is the heart of the ritual. Slow, deliberate strokes move across the scalp from front to back and side to side. Temples are worked with small circular pressure. The occipital base at the back of the skull is given particular attention because this is where stress most commonly accumulates. Neck and upper shoulders are included in the ritual work. Pressure is adjusted to your preference. Some guests want deep release. Some want very light, soothing pressure. Your stylist will ask.
Aromatics matter. The oils and treatments we use are selected for their sensory as well as their functional properties. Expect soft botanical scents rather than harsh fragrances. The experience is as much about what you smell and feel as what is technically happening to your scalp.
After the massage phase, the ritual moves into a warm rinse and a light, clean finishing conditioner. Hair is towel-dried and, if the Scalp Ritual is part of a broader appointment, the cut or colour service resumes. If the ritual is standalone, hair is styled out with a blow-dry so you leave looking as good as you feel.
The Kohort Scalp Ritual is available with all of our stylists. Every stylist at Kohort has been trained on the protocol, and each brings their own subtle variation to the massage work. Some clients develop a strong preference for one stylist's technique and rebook consistently with that person. Others rotate across stylists depending on availability.
For clients with specific scalp concerns that require ongoing support, your stylist may recommend a home-care routine with Kérastase Specifique, Olaplex scalp-specific products, or Davines scalp tonics, depending on what matches your scalp best. Home scalp care is a meaningful extension of the in-salon ritual and genuinely helps the benefit last longer.

Kohort Scalp Ritual Process, What to Expect
1. Consultation
Your stylist asks about current scalp concerns, stress levels, sensitivity, any allergies to botanicals, and pressure preferences for the massage work. A targeted scalp treatment product is prescribed.
2. Warm Aromatic Oil
Warm aromatic oil is applied slowly along the hairline and through the scalp. Initial massage work begins at this stage to start melting tension.
3. Targeted Scalp Treatment
The prescribed scalp treatment product is applied. Products vary by scalp need and may include Kérastase Specifique, Kérastase Densifique, Davines scalp tonics or Olaplex scalp-focused formulas.
4. Massage Work
The core of the ritual. Slow, deliberate massage across the scalp, temples, occipital base, neck and upper shoulders. Pressure is adjusted to your preference.
5. Warm Rinse and Finishing Conditioner
Hair is rinsed with warm water, a light clean conditioner is applied, and hair is towel-dried.
6. Style or Continue Broader Service
If the Scalp Ritual is standalone, hair is styled out with a blow-dry. If it is part of a larger appointment, the cut, colour or treatment service resumes.
7. Home Care Brief
Your stylist walks you through any recommended scalp home-care products if appropriate. Not every client needs a home regimen, but those with specific scalp concerns will receive a prescription.
Kohort Scalp Ritual Pricing at KOHORT
The Kohort Scalp Ritual at Kohort is priced from $80 per our treatment menu. That baseline covers a full ritual including warm aromatic oil, targeted scalp treatment, full massage work, warm rinse and finishing conditioner.
For longer ritual experiences, particularly those layered with additional treatment steps or booked as part of a longer self-care appointment, pricing may be quoted higher at consultation. The standalone ritual typically runs sixty to ninety minutes.
When booked as an add-on to a colour, cut or other treatment service, the Scalp Ritual pricing remains $80 and the additional time is built into the overall appointment. This is often the most efficient way to experience the full ritual, because the processing time of a colour service can be used for the massage and aromatic work.
Complementary treatments are priced separately. Kérastase Fusio Dose at $50. Davines Liquid Luster at $25. K18 Molecular Repair from $50. Olaplex Bonding from $50.

Aftercare for the Kohort Scalp Ritual
Aftercare following the Scalp Ritual is largely sensory and routine-based rather than strictly product-based.
Drink water. The ritual is genuinely relaxing and, like a massage, it can be mildly dehydrating. A glass of water before and after the appointment makes a difference.
Avoid harsh scalp products at home for a week after the ritual. No strong clarifying shampoos, no heavy tonics, no aggressive exfoliating scrubs. Let the calm settle.
Use a sulphate-free, sodium-chloride-free shampoo and conditioner at home. The Scalp Ritual effect holds up longest with gentle at-home care.
For clients with specific scalp concerns (oily, dry, sensitive, congested, thinning) your stylist may prescribe a targeted home-care product. Follow the protocol they recommend. Kérastase Specifique and Densifique ranges, Davines scalp tonics and Olaplex scalp-focused formulas are the most commonly prescribed.
Rebook the ritual every four to six weeks if you are using it as a wellness routine. Many of our regulars book Scalp Ritual alongside their colour refresh appointments, which typically align with a six to eight week cycle.
Sleep well on the night of the ritual. Clients often report genuinely improved sleep on the evening of a Scalp Ritual appointment. Lean into it.
Who the Kohort Scalp Ritual Is Ideal For
The Kohort Scalp Ritual is ideal for anyone carrying stress in the scalp, shoulders or neck, for clients with specific scalp concerns (oily, dry, sensitive, congested, thinning), for anyone who finds the salon chair a rare moment of stillness, for clients with long commutes, for parents of young children, for sustained-screen-work professionals, for anyone recovering from illness or burnout, and for clients who simply want to genuinely enjoy their hair appointment as a wellness moment.
Regular colour clients often add the Scalp Ritual to their appointments because the timing of a colour service (processing time, second rinse, finishing) overlaps naturally with the massage and aromatic phases. It is the single most efficient way to experience the full ritual without extending the appointment significantly.
Clients under sustained work stress respond very strongly to the Scalp Ritual. The combination of warm aromatic oil, slow deliberate massage and quiet atmosphere delivers a reliable nervous system reset.
Clients with scalp-specific concerns benefit from the targeted treatment layer. Oily scalps respond to rebalancing treatments. Dry or sensitive scalps respond to soothing aromatic and nourishing treatments. Clients concerned about hair density or follicle health benefit from the Densifique-style prescribing.
The Scalp Ritual may not be the primary recommendation for clients with active scalp infection, severe dermatitis, open wounds or significant medical scalp conditions. In those cases we recommend a GP or dermatology consultation first.
