Blow Dry Styling
A proper blow dry is not a quick dry off. It is the finish that makes the cut, the colour and the brief all make sense.
What Is a Blow Dry and Styling Service?
A blow dry at a salon is the finishing service that ties everything else together. The hair is washed, prepped with the correct products for the finish you want, then dried with a round brush, paddle brush or diffuser depending on the brief. Styling is the step after, where the stylist uses heat tools, pins and product to build the final shape. The blow dry is the foundation and the styling is the detail work.
At Kohort, blow dry and styling is offered two ways. Book it as a basin booking, a shorter service focused on wash, blow dry and simple finish. Or book it as a full styled appointment, with waves, curls, a sleek finish, or an upstyle for an event. The basin booking is how our Richmond regulars use the service between colour appointments. It keeps hair looking salon fresh for a few days, which matters when you have meetings in Cremorne, a Saturday at the MCG, or a Friday night on Bridge Road.
A good blow dry is not about drying hair. It is about building the shape you want for how you are going to wear it. A blow dry for a South Yarra corporate lunch sits differently to a blow dry for a Collingwood gallery opening. Your stylist reads the brief, your hair type, the humidity and the shape of the cut, then decides on tools, direction and heat.
Blow dry and styling at Kohort suits every hair type and every length. Short hair needs as much technique as long hair. Fine hair needs product layering and the right brush diameter. Thick hair needs sectioning and the right airflow. Curly and wavy hair can be smoothed, diffused, defined or set into an entirely different pattern.
This is the service guests book the day before a wedding, the morning of a Spring Racing marquee, before a work photo shoot, or simply because a professional blow dry feels better than anything you can do at home with the same hair.
How KOHORT Approaches Blow Dry and Styling
At Kohort, a blow dry is treated as a craft service, not a filler. Every stylist has their own approach, with shared principles across the team.
The wash and prep matter as much as the dry. Most guests underestimate how much of a blow dry is decided before the dryer comes out. Your stylist picks the shampoo and conditioner based on hair type and the finish. Kérastase Chronologiste or Blond Absolu for smooth polished blow dries on colour treated hair. Kérastase Densifique or K18 peptide shampoo for volume on fine hair. Davines This Is A Curl Moisturising Mousse for texture and wave.
Heat protection is not optional. Kérastase Resistance Ciment Thermique is our go to for colour treated hair. K18 leave in mist runs double duty as heat protection and bond support. Davines Melu Shield sits on the gentler plant forward end.
Technique is where stylists separate themselves. A rough dry is not a shortcut. It is a deliberate step to remove most of the water before round brush work begins. Sectioning is planned, with clips at the nape, crown, sides and fringe. The round brush is rolled under, over or out depending on the end shape. Tension matters. Too loose and hair looks flat. Too tight and hair looks stiff.
The co-working model at Kohort means your stylist stays with you through the whole service. You are not handed to a junior for the wash. The same hands that cut and coloured your hair style it. That consistency is why regulars book back to back wash and blow dry services with the same person every few weeks.
Product layering is the final piece. A shine spray like Kérastase Elixir Ultime, Davines Love Curl Revitalizer for wave, Kevin Murphy Session Spray Flex for hold that still moves, or a working spray for upstyles. Retail is in arm's reach, so if your stylist recommends a product you can take it home same day.

Blow Dry and Styling Process
1. Consultation
The stylist asks how you are going to wear the hair, where you are going, what product you like and what your hair usually does in humidity. Two minutes of good questions saves thirty minutes of fixing.
2. Wash and Prep
Shampoo and conditioner selected to suit your hair type and the finish. Heat protection applied at the towel dried stage before any tool touches the hair.
3. Rough Dry
Excess water removed with a paddle brush or hands, leaving the hair at around 70 percent dry before round brushing begins.
4. Section and Blow Dry
Hair sectioned at the nape, crown, sides and fringe. Each section blow dried with a round brush, paddle brush or diffuser depending on the finish.
5. Styling and Finish
Tong, wand, flat iron or set depending on the brief. Product layered in for hold, shine or texture. Hairspray to finish if the look calls for it.
6. Take Home
Retail product recommendations if you want to replicate at home, plus a quick tutorial from your stylist on the one trick that will make it work on your hair.
Blow Dry and Styling Pricing at KOHORT
Blow dry pricing at Kohort varies by stylist, length and complexity of finish. As a guide, a basin blow dry on short to mid length hair starts from around $65 to $85. Mid to long hair blow dry and styling sits from $85 to $120. Event styling with waves, curls or a formal set is $130 to $180. Upstyles for weddings and racing events often start from $180.
Add ons are priced per stylist. K18 Molecular Repair from $50. A toning gloss refresh through the blow dry from $50. Davines Liquid Luster from $25.
For a precise quote, email salon@kohort.com.au with a photo and your length. Every stylist is an independent business, so pricing sits slightly differently across the team.
Aftercare, Making Your Blow Dry Last
A well done blow dry can hold for three to five days with the right care.
Skip the morning shower. Resist washing it off the next day. A silk pillowcase keeps the cuticle smooth overnight, and a loose ponytail or silk scrunchie prevents crushing.
Use dry shampoo properly. Kérastase Fresh Affair or Davines Dede at the roots on day two, brushed through, extends the blow dry another full day.
Avoid steam. Long hot showers ruin blow dries. Shower cool if you must, and keep a shower cap on.
Refresh with a tong on day three, not the dryer. A quick wave tong or curling iron through the mid lengths buys another day.
Clarify weekly. Davines Solu or Kérastase Bain Clarifiant resets product build up. Build up makes even a perfect blow dry look flat.
Humidity proof. Kérastase Laque Couture or Kevin Murphy Session Spray Flex locks the shape against Melbourne humidity without feeling stiff.
Never sleep on damp hair. Fully dry, fully cooled, always.
Who Blow Dry and Styling at KOHORT Is Ideal For
A blow dry at Kohort suits anyone who wants their hair to look like it just left a salon. Regulars book between colour appointments every one to three weeks. Event guests book for weddings, formals, Spring Racing, work functions and photo shoots. Corporate guests book standing Friday slots before end of week meetings or travel.
Guests with tricky hair often find a professional blow dry transforms how they feel about their hair. Humidity sensitive hair, fine hair that collapses at home, thick hair that takes an hour to dry, wavy hair that cannot decide, all sit better after a professional finish.
It also suits guests who have just had a fresh cut or colour done elsewhere and want the finish elevated before an event. A blow dry on already cut hair is a welcome service.
Not right for you if you want a waterproof hold or a ten hour outdoor festival finish. Those need a different brief, worth discussing at booking.
Blow Dry and Styling for Clients Across Inner Melbourne
Our blow dry book pulls from every inner Melbourne suburb. Richmond locals drop in from Bridge Road, Swan Street pubs and the Cremorne tech precinct for Friday morning basin blow dries. Burnley and East Richmond regulars walk in from the Yarra side. Cremorne clients from SEEK, REA, MYOB and Disney Australia book lunchtime basin slots between meetings.
South Yarra and Toorak clients cross Punt Road for polished blow dries before Chapel Street lunches, Como House weddings, and Spring Racing days at Caulfield, Flemington and Moonee Valley. Prahran and Windsor guests lean editorial, textured waves or piecey styling for Chapel Street.
From the north, Fitzroy and Fitzroy North guests book blow dries to sit with sharper cuts and fringe work. Collingwood regulars from Smith Street and Gertrude Street want styling that reads fashion forward. Abbotsford, Clifton Hill, Carlton, Carlton North and Northcote clients book for Edinburgh Gardens picnics, Lygon Street dinners and Smith Street openings.
From the east, Hawthorn, Hawthorn East, Kew, Camberwell and Balwyn are our classic polished blow dry demographic. Boroondara family events, school formals, Kooyong tennis and Australian Open styling drive steady bookings. Balwyn High formal season is busy. Fairfield and Alphington guests travel in for lived in blow dries between colour appointments.
East Melbourne clients book event blow dries before Parliament functions, Collins Street galas, Xavier and Mercy school events, and MCG corporate boxes. Melbourne CBD apartment belt clients book Friday afternoon polish before weekend weddings. St Kilda clients mix beach ready blow dries with polished finishes for Palais and Prince Bandroom events.
Kohort at 234 Bridge Road, Richmond is fifteen minutes or less by car, tram or train from most of inner Melbourne.
