A Salon for Ashburton Locals
Ashburton is a leafy, family-oriented middle-ring suburb sitting twelve kilometres south-east of the Melbourne CBD in the City of Boroondara. Postcode 3147, population 7,952 at the 2021 census, bordered by Gardiners Creek to the north and the Alamein rail line running east-west through the middle. The suburb gained a reputation in 2021 for having one of the longest average life expectancies of any Melbourne suburb, which tells you something about its pace: quieter than Armadale, leafier than Malvern, built around High Street Ashburton's village strip, Ashburton Park, the Alamein line, and a school-and-family rhythm that runs year-round. Kohort is twenty to twenty-five minutes north-west of Ashburton in Richmond, at 234 Bridge Road, and we see a consistent flow of Ashburton regulars who decided the specialist-led, unhurried co-working studio suited them better than anything locally.
The Ashburton we work with is solidly family and professional. Established couples and young families in the period brick homes along Warrigal Road and the streets off High Street. A strong school catchment across Solway Primary, Ashburton Primary, Holy Family Primary and Ashwood College, with easy reach of Scotch, MLC, Methodist Ladies' and Camberwell Grammar. Weekenders on the Gardiners Creek Trail. A steady population of professionals commuting into the CBD on the Alamein line or driving up the Monash. A high proportion of residents with university-level education and a long-term hold on the area; this is not a transient suburb.
Our Ashburton clients arrive with a clear brief. A soft, hand-painted balayage that holds through a school term without needing a refresh. A seamless root touch-up that sits invisibly into existing highlights. A well-cut bob or long layer that reads polished without effort. A full updo rehearsal before a family wedding or milestone event. A colour correction of prior foil work. A grey transition strategy. A men's scissor cut with a proper skin fade, booked alongside the family appointment.
The through-line is considered, specialist work done at an unhurried pace. The co-working model at Kohort is built for exactly that rhythm. Three-and-a-half to four hours of one stylist's full attention, no handover, no pressure.
Getting to Kohort from Ashburton
Twenty to twenty-five minutes from Ashburton to 234 Bridge Road off-peak. We are upfront about the drive, because it is real. What Ashburton clients tell us is the unhurried appointment is the reason they keep coming back.
The most direct driving route is north up Warrigal Road to High Street, west on High Street through Glen Iris and Malvern, right onto Williams Road or Kooyong Road, onto Toorak Road, right onto Punt Road, and Bridge Road is your first major cross-street once you drop over the Yarra. About nine kilometres and twenty to twenty-five minutes off-peak.
A second option, especially good during peak hour, is the Monash Freeway. Jump on the Monash at Warrigal Road inbound, take the Toorak Road or Punt Road exit, and run up to Bridge Road. The Monash is quicker on a clear run but can bank up badly on a Friday afternoon or any time there is a major MCG event.
If you prefer not to drive, the Alamein line runs direct from Ashburton Station to Camberwell, then changes at Camberwell for any city-bound train, jumping off at East Richmond Station. East Richmond is a six-minute walk from the salon. Door to door, around thirty-five to forty minutes. This is a genuinely easy option for a big colour day, especially if you want to have lunch on Bridge Road afterwards.
Parking at the salon is simple. Metered on-street on Bridge Road, Lord Street and Docker Street for shorter appointments. Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre 500 metres east has a large paid car park that runs all day and is our default for three-hour-plus colour services.
On AFL Saturdays, the Monash Freeway and Punt Road both bank up near the MCG. If your appointment is on an AFL Saturday, leave fifteen minutes earlier than usual or plan the train-plus-walk option.
Services Ashburton Clients Love at Kohort
Ashburton brings us a family-and-professional mix of work. Lived-in blonde. Colour correction. Grey blending. Event styling. The kind of cut that holds through a busy school term. Here is what gets booked most.
Lived-In Blonde and Balayage
The Ashburton blonde we book most is a soft, hand-painted balayage with root depth, smudged at the regrowth line, toned to beige or honey rather than a flat ash, and finished with a Kerastase Fusio Dose and K18 Molecular Repair mask. It grows out over five to six months and reads polished in school-gate photos and on a weekend walk along the Gardiners Creek Trail. See the Balayage and Lived-In Blonde pages.
Colour Correction
Box dye, banded foils, brassy highlights from a previous salon, ombre growing in badly. Colour correction is slow, technical work that the co-working model was built for. Three to six hour appointments with no handovers, Olaplex and K18 throughout, and an honest staging plan where needed. See the Colour Correction page.
Seamless Grey Blending
Ashburton clients in their late forties, fifties and sixties come to us for grey work. Traditional root touch-ups for coverage. Strategic highlight patterning for a soft transition out of dye over six to twelve months. Read more on the Grey Blending page.
Haircuts
Long layers with soft face-framing, a classic lob, a textured modern shag for the younger Ashburton client, a sharp bob, curtain bangs. We consult carefully before cutting and finish with a considered blow-dry. See Haircuts and Pixie and Short Hair.
Bridal and Event Hair
Weddings, school balls, end-of-year speech nights, Spring Racing, milestone birthdays. Sheridan May Hair runs Kohort's bridal and event specialty with a full consultation, rehearsal and day-of model. See the Bridal and Event Hair page.
Keratin Smoothing and Nanoplasty
Melbourne humidity is hard on a daily blow-dry, especially for clients walking the Gardiners Creek Trail in summer. Keratin Smoothing gives three to four months of smoother hair. Nanoplasty is the formaldehyde-free option, popular with coloured-hair Ashburton clients.
Creative Colour
For the younger end of the Ashburton clientele, and for school leavers in particular, we do creative colour across the spectrum. Copper, cherry, silver, money piece, peekaboo panels. See the Creative Colour page.
Hair Treatments
Every colour service includes a bond-building treatment. Kerastase Fusio Dose for shine, K18 Molecular Repair for lifted hair, L'Oreal Metal Detox for Melbourne tap-water metal, Bhave for keratin care. See the full Hair Treatment menu.
Men's Cuts
Ashburton husbands, sons and partners book us for tailored scissor cuts with a considered skin fade rather than a rushed number two. Forty-five minutes to an hour, wash, cut, finish, book back in at six weeks.

Why Ashburton Clients Choose Kohort
The first answer is the co-working model. Kohort is not a chain. Every stylist here is an independent practitioner who owns their chair, sets their own rates and owns their own column. No handovers, no juniors finishing a blow-dry, no pressure to fit more heads into the day. Your appointment is dedicated, unhurried and led by one stylist start to finish. For an Ashburton client used to the chain-salon rhythm, the difference is immediately noticeable.
The second answer is the specialist mix. Seven stylists with distinct strengths. A mother of the bride goes to Sheridan. A woman transitioning to grey goes to Sheree or Grace. An Ashburton professional who wants glossy, low-maintenance blonde goes to Elodie or Billie. A client with a colour correction goes to Sheree.
The third answer is the product range. Kerastase, Davines, Olaplex, K18, L'Oreal Metal Detox and Bhave on the retail wall at professional pricing.
The fourth answer is the space. Kohort is calm, natural-lit, considered. Not a high-volume salon. For a client who is tired of the chain-salon experience, walking in here is a different energy.
The fifth answer is the honest consultation. Our stylists will tell you if what you want is not going to work on your hair, or if a service needs to be staged across multiple visits. No yes-and-regret conversations.
Landmarks & Life in Ashburton
High Street Ashburton, the village-feel shopping strip, is the civic heart of the suburb. Cafes, a butcher, a grocer, the Ashburton Community Centre, the Ashburton Library, and a clutch of small boutiques anchor the strip. The Ashburton Pool and Recreation Centre, YMCA-operated, is a summer fixture for local families. The Alamein railway line runs directly through the strip, with Ashburton Station on High Street itself, and the line extends east to Alamein Station after the 1948 extension.
Ashburton Park is the main green space, featuring a playground and an off-leash dog area, and is the Saturday morning gathering point for many local families. Warner Reserve Playground is the quieter alternative. Watson Park hosts Auskick and junior football. Alamein Avenue Playground is another local staple. The Gardiners Creek Trail, running along the northern edge of Ashburton, is one of the best walking and cycling paths in the inner south-east, and connects you through Glen Iris, Malvern East and out to Camberwell.
Schools shape the weekday rhythm. Solway Primary, Ashburton Primary, Holy Family Primary and Ashwood College are all within the suburb. Easy reach of Monash University, Deakin, Swinburne and Holmesglen Institute TAFE brings a steady student population, particularly around the Chadstone and Clayton edges.
The Outer Circle Line bicycle and walking track, part of the old rail corridor, runs through the northern edge of the suburb and connects out to Camberwell and Kew. Warrigal Road runs north-south and carries the main traffic. Coming in from High Street Ashburton, you pass through Glen Iris and reach Malvern in a few minutes, then Armadale.
