Balayage Fitzroy North

Hand-painted, lived-in balayage designed for Fitzroy North's natural-first, ingredient-literate crowd, painted at a Richmond studio that runs on specialist time rather than chain-salon pace.

Fitzroy North's Dedicated Balayage Specialists

Fitzroy North is one of those rare inner-north pockets where the Saturday double-pram crowd around Edinburgh Gardens, the St Georges Road wine-bar set and the long-time Victorian terrace owners all share one quiet rule about hair. It has to look like yours. Not like a salon. Fitzroy North clients will quietly walk out of a chain-salon blowout if the blonde reads as striped, or if the copper lifts into cherry, or if the regrowth line hits like a ruler three weeks in. They are the most ingredient-literate, design-literate and colour-literate clientele we see at Kohort, and that shapes every balayage we paint for them.

The Fitzroy North balayage brief tends to be natural first. Soft. Smudged at the root. Toned to a beige, honey or warm champagne rather than an ash. Designed to grow out across six to eight months without a hard regrowth line. Built to photograph in Edinburgh Gardens on a Sunday afternoon without going brassy in the flash. And increasingly, built on copper, strawberry and warm auburn tones rather than cool blonde, because the inner-north has swung hard toward copper over the last three years and Fitzroy North is right in the middle of that movement.

Kohort sits at 234 Bridge Road Richmond, a 12 to 15 minute drive down St Georges Road, through Hoddle Street and onto Bridge Road. We see a steady flow of Fitzroy North regulars, usually booking every eight to twelve weeks rather than monthly, often pairing their balayage with a modern long layer cut or a soft curl-specialist cut. Curly and wavy hair is common in this part of town, and a lot of the balayage we paint for Fitzroy North clients is sitting on natural texture rather than blow-dried straight. That changes placement, tone and finish, and it is one of the reasons our balayage work reads so differently from what you get in a volume salon.

The other thing Fitzroy North clients care about is what touches their hair. We hear the question "what products do you use" on almost every first-visit consultation. The answer matters. Our balayage services are built around L'Oréal Metal Detox pre-treatment to neutralise metal particles from Melbourne water, Olaplex or K18 bond support through the lift, a Kérastase or Davines tone, and a Fusio Dose or Davines Liquid Luster gloss to finish. Retail is Kérastase Blond Absolu, Davines Alchemic, K18 Molecular Repair and Olaplex home care. If you are coming from Fitzroy North and you want plant-based, nature-forward product recommendations, Davines is our first answer and sits on our retail wall alongside everything else.

Balayage in Fitzroy North deserves a stylist who reads the room rather than working from a textbook, and that is the shape of the chair you book at Kohort.

What Makes Kohort the Best Place for Balayage Near Fitzroy North

The best balayage near Fitzroy North is not the closest one. It is the one where your stylist has the time, the technique and the retail range to deliver the soft, lived-in, slightly warm balayage the inner-north has come to expect. Kohort was built on exactly that promise. Seven specialist stylists, one Richmond studio, a co-working model that takes the volume pressure out of the chair, and a full retail wall of Kérastase, Davines, Olaplex, K18, L'Oréal Metal Detox and Bhave so that the product story matches the service story.

The co-working model is the single biggest reason Fitzroy North clients make the trip down to Richmond for balayage rather than walking to one of the local High Street or St Georges Road salons. Every stylist at Kohort owns their chair. They set their own pricing, manage their own diary and own their own column. That means your three to four hour balayage is actually three to four hours of your stylist's attention, not three hours split between foils, a junior, a shampoo station and the chair next to yours. For a service as design-led as balayage, that is the difference between a placement that flatters your face and a placement that looks like it was plotted on a grid.

The second reason is the specialist mix. Balayage at Kohort is performed by Sheree, Taylah, Sheridan, Billie, Grace and Zoe, six different colourists with six genuinely different strengths. Sheridan skews toward soft, natural, summer-looking balayage that suits the Fitzroy North lived-in brief. Taylah's balayage holds brightness at week ten and is the best fit for clients who want impact without monthly rebooking. Billie brings a creative, artistic edge, copper and warm tones in particular. Sheree is the person you want if your hair is short, a pixie or a bob, and most salons have told you balayage will not work. Zoe leans blonde and cooler, often combining balayage with foilayage through the face frame. Grace is our foundation colourist at accessible pricing.

The third reason is pace. A balayage at Kohort is not plotted against a volume target. There is no salon manager chasing extra heads through the chair. That means your stylist has the time to Metal Detox pre-treat, lift slowly with bond support, tone in stages, gloss, cut, blow-dry and walk you through home care without the constant glance at the next booking. For Fitzroy North clients who care about what goes on their hair, that pace is as important as the technique.

The fourth reason is location. Fitzroy North to Bridge Road Richmond is a straight run south down Nicholson Street or St Georges Road, across Hoddle and east onto Bridge Road. Twelve to fifteen minutes by car outside peak. There are also trams down St Georges Road and Nicholson Street that connect into Victoria Parade, and the 48 and 75 trams run along Bridge Road directly past the door. We see a lot of Fitzroy North clients who ride the Merri Creek trail down to the Yarra and in via the river path on lighter booking days.

The fifth reason is the retail. Every product your stylist uses on your hair lives on our retail wall at professional pricing. Kérastase Blond Absolu for cool-tone maintenance. Davines Alchemic for plant-based tone refresh. K18 leave-in for lifted hair repair. Olaplex No. 7 oil for everyday. L'Oréal Metal Detox shampoo for Melbourne water. Bhave keratin care if we have smoothed you. We do not push volume. We recommend the one or two products that match what we did in the chair.

The through line is that Kohort exists to deliver a better balayage experience than the volume model can, and the Fitzroy North audience is exactly the one that notices the difference.

Balayage Process and What to Expect

A balayage at Kohort begins with a proper consultation, usually fifteen to twenty minutes on your first visit. We look at your hair dry, in natural light, and ask about your colour history, box dye use, what you have tried at home, how warm or cool you like the payoff and how often you actually want to come back in. For Fitzroy North clients, we nearly always land on a lived-in placement with a soft smudged regrowth and a warm, considered tone. We confirm the placement plan before any product is mixed.

Step one is preparation. If your hair has box dye history, previous lightening, mineral buildup from Melbourne tap water, or any metal contamination, we pre-treat with L'Oréal Metal Detox. This step is not optional on our chair because lifting unprotected hair is the most common reason balayage goes banded, yellow or brittle. Pre-treatment takes fifteen to twenty minutes and changes everything about how cleanly the lightener lifts.

Step two is the hand-painting itself. Your stylist paints lightener onto strategic sections freehand, working around your parting, face frame, and the way you actually wear your hair. Placement is designed for your hair type, whether that is straight, wavy or curly. Curl-heavy hair is painted differently to straight hair because the brightness lands on the twist of the curl rather than spread across the strand. Expect thirty to ninety minutes on this step depending on your density and length.

Step three is processing. This is the slowest part and the most important. Your stylist watches the lift carefully because different sections move at different speeds. Underprocessed balayage lands warm and yellow. Overprocessed balayage lands fried and damaged. The middle zone is where the design work pays off.

Step four is rinse and tone. Olaplex or K18 bond support runs through this stage. The toner is chosen based on your undertone, your skin tone and the final shade you agreed on at consultation. For the Fitzroy North natural-first brief, we usually tone warm beige, honey, warm champagne, or a warm copper wash rather than anything ash or silver.

Step five is finishing. A bonding treatment, Kérastase Fusio Dose or Davines Liquid Luster gloss, blow-dry, style and retail conversation. If you are pairing your balayage with a cut, the cut happens after colour so the shape flatters the placement.

You will leave with a realistic rebook window, usually eight to twelve weeks, and a home care plan.

Which Kohort Stylist Does Balayage

Six of our seven stylists take balayage bookings, and each one has a different fit for the Fitzroy North brief.

Sheree is our short-hair and colour-correction specialist with over twenty years behind the chair. She is the stylist to book if your hair is a pixie, bixie, crop or short bob and every other salon has told you balayage will not work at that length. Placement changes on short hair, but the technique holds up. Sheree also leads our colour-correction work, so if you are coming in from Fitzroy North with banded foils or a previous balayage that needs softening, start with her.

Taylah runs Studio by Taylah inside Kohort. Her signature is balayage that photographs bright on day one and still holds together at week ten. She is the right fit for Fitzroy North clients who want lived-in blonde or balayage with genuine brightness that does not demand a monthly refresh. Taylah books through her own Timely page.

Sheridan runs Sheridan May Hair inside Kohort and is our softest, most natural balayage colourist. If you want your balayage to look like you spent a summer in Portsea rather than three hours in a salon, Sheridan is the first name. She also covers bridal and event styling if you are planning a wedding around Edinburgh Gardens or at a Fitzroy North local venue.

Billie brings thirty years of colour experience and an artistic eye. Warm coppers, strawberry blonde, soft pastels, lived-in bleach and tone work on shorter cuts. For the Fitzroy North copper-and-ginger brief specifically, Billie is the name that comes up most often. Currently welcoming existing clients only, so check availability.

Grace is our foundation balayage colourist with accessible pricing. Trained at Biba and Billie Jean Hair, Grace is a good first booking if you want a gentle entry into balayage or a natural blonde placement without the senior rate.

Zoe skews cooler and brighter, often pairing balayage with foilayage through the face frame for extra brightness where it shows. Best fit if you are moving away from a traditional full-foil blonde and toward balayage but still want cool payoff.

If you are unsure, email salon@kohort.com.au with a photo of your current hair and a reference and we will match you to the right colourist for what you want.

Getting to Kohort from Fitzroy North

Fitzroy North to Kohort Studio Richmond is a straight run south. By car, head down Nicholson Street or St Georges Road, turn left onto Victoria Parade, cross Hoddle Street and bear right onto Bridge Road. Kohort is at 234 Bridge Road, on the north side of the street between Lord Street and Docker Street. Twelve to fifteen minutes outside peak. Up to twenty minutes if Hoddle Street is backed up at rush hour.

By public transport you have a few good options. The 11 tram runs down St Georges Road into the CBD via Victoria Parade. Jump off near Victoria Parade and Hoddle Street, then walk ten minutes east on Bridge Road, or transfer to the 48 or 75 tram which runs along Bridge Road directly past our door. The 96 tram down Nicholson Street is another option with a similar transfer pattern. Rushall Station on the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines is another option if you prefer train, with a transfer to the 48 or 75 tram at Victoria Parade.

For riders, the Merri Creek trail runs through Fitzroy North and connects to the Yarra trail further east. Ride down to the Yarra and come in via the Cremorne side on the river path. We have street bike rings out the front of the studio on Bridge Road and side streets.

If you are driving and coming for a three to four hour balayage appointment, metered on-street parking on Bridge Road, Lord Street and Docker Street is usually the easiest. Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre car park is 500 metres east of us and is the default fallback for longer colour bookings. Avoid two-hour limited spots if you are booked for full balayage. Cyclists can lock up on the bike rings directly outside.

Balayage Pricing at Kohort

Balayage pricing at Kohort varies by stylist, hair length, density and the lift required to get you to your target shade. As a guide, balayage starts from around $300 for shorter hair and $350 to $450 for mid to long hair. Thick, dense, waist-length hair with significant lift may be quoted higher, and that quote is always agreed at consultation rather than added at the chair.

Add-on treatments are priced separately and usually recommended for lifted hair. L'Oréal Metal Detox pre-treatment from $45. K18 Molecular Repair from $50. Olaplex Bonding from $50. Kérastase Fusio Dose Ritual at $50 for a high-shine finish. Davines Liquid Luster at $25 for a lighter shine refresh.

If you want a precise quote before booking, email salon@kohort.com.au with a photo of your current hair and your reference, or book a free fifteen minute consultation in salon. We do not give full pricing by phone without seeing the hair because surprise charges at the chair are the single biggest complaint we hear about the volume salon experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Kohort from Fitzroy North?

Twelve to fifteen minutes by car outside peak, via Nicholson Street or St Georges Road, Victoria Parade, Hoddle Street and Bridge Road. Around twenty minutes at Hoddle Street rush hour.

What is the best balayage for Fitzroy North hair?

Most Fitzroy North clients land on a soft, lived-in placement with a smudged regrowth and a warm tone, honey, beige, copper or warm champagne, rather than a cool ash blonde. That is the natural-first brief we see from this suburb almost every time.

Does Kohort do copper balayage?

Yes. Copper and warm auburn balayage is one of the most requested services from the inner north, and Billie and Sheridan lead this work for us. Copper placement is different to blonde placement because warmth reads differently against regrowth.

Can I get balayage on curly hair?

Absolutely. Curl-heavy hair is painted differently because brightness lands on the curl twist rather than across the strand. Our balayage work is designed for whatever texture you actually wear, not a blow-dried idealised version of it.

How often do Fitzroy North clients book balayage?

Most of our Fitzroy North regulars book every eight to twelve weeks, with an optional gloss or toner refresh at the six week mark. Lived-in balayage can be stretched further if your hair is holding tone well.

Is the balayage at Kohort damaging?

Not if it is done properly. We pre-treat with L'Oréal Metal Detox, run Olaplex or K18 bond support through the lift, tone gently and finish with a bonding treatment. Balayage is one of the gentler lightening options because lightener sits away from the scalp and is applied in thinner sections.

Do you sell Davines and plant-based product?

Yes. Davines sits on our retail wall alongside Kérastase, Olaplex, K18, L'Oréal Metal Detox and Bhave. If you want nature-forward product recommendations, Davines is our first answer for Fitzroy North clients.

How much does balayage cost for Fitzroy North clients?

From around $300 for shorter hair, $350 to $450 for mid to long, set by each stylist and agreed at consultation. Add-on treatments priced separately.

Can I park near Kohort for a long balayage appointment?

Yes. Metered on-street parking on Bridge Road, Lord Street and Docker Street. Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre car park 500 metres east is the fallback for three to four hour appointments.

Which stylist is best for a natural Fitzroy North balayage?

Sheridan is our softest, most natural balayage colourist. Taylah is the best fit if you want more brightness while keeping the lived-in feel. Billie for copper specifically.
