Bridal and Event Styling in Hawthorn, Kohort Studio Richmond

Classic, polished bridal and event hair for Hawthorn brides, Scotch and MLC formal guests and Spring Racing attendees, led by Sheridan May Hair.

Hawthorn's Dedicated Bridal and Event Styling Specialists

Hawthorn bridal carries a particular brief. It is the corner of Melbourne where Grace Park mansions meet Glenferrie Road tram stops and the Scotch and MLC catchments define the social calendar. A Hawthorn wedding often runs through Leonda by the Yarra on the Studley Park bend, Studley Park Boathouse for garden ceremonies, St Peter's Eastern Hill for the church run, or a grand private home reception in Grace Park. The brief is classic over bohemian, polished over styled-up, and built for heritage photography rather than editorial moodboards.

Kohort Studio sits at 234 Bridge Road, Richmond, ten to fourteen minutes west along Bridge Road from Hawthorn. Our bridal and event styling practice is led by Sheridan May Hair, a Melbourne bridal specialist with a long classic-and-editorial portfolio. Grace handles bridesmaid and accessible-priced bridal work. Zoe brings polished classic styling to the brief. Taylah contributes editorial styling for brides who want modern texture without losing refinement, and Sheree handles short-hair brides, mother-of-the-bride bookings and the grandmother-of-the-bride work that runs across Boroondara family weddings.

The Hawthorn bridal calendar tracks the Melbourne peaks: October and November (Spring Racing plus wedding season), February and March (autumn weddings), May and June (winter indoor receptions). On top of that, Scotch College formal, MLC formal and the broader Boroondara private school formal pipeline drive a strong October and November booking wave. The combination means our book at peak typically closes six to nine months ahead for Saturday appointments.

Spring Racing overlaps this stretch. Derby Day, Melbourne Cup Day, Oaks Day and Stakes Day all generate a wave of Flemington styling bookings across Boroondara. Caulfield Guineas in October, Cox Plate at Moonee Valley and the Mornington races in summer round out the racing calendar. For a Cup Week booking, we recommend locking in by July or August.

What Makes Kohort the Best Place for Bridal and Event Styling Near Hawthorn

The first answer is Sheridan. Sheridan May Hair has styled Melbourne weddings for years, with a portfolio that covers classic chignons, soft romantic half-ups, veiled bridal looks, editorial waves and slick modern ponytails. For Hawthorn brides at Leonda or Studley Park, classic is usually the brief, and it is Sheridan's strongest territory.

The second answer is the trial process. A Kohort bridal trial runs ninety minutes with clean, dry hair, a curated set of references, and your veil or headpiece if you have it. We work through two or three concepts, land on the final direction, adjust in the chair, and photograph the result from every angle. By the end of the session you have a look agreed, product notes for the week before the wedding, and a wedding-morning timeline.

The third answer is the pre-trial consultation. For complex briefs (heirloom veil, fresh flowers, ornate headpiece, family jewellery) we run a fifteen to twenty minute consultation first. A Hawthorn church ceremony at St John's Toorak Road Camberwell with a grandmother's veil reads differently to a Studley Park garden ceremony with fresh blooms, and your stylist will ask about both.

The fourth answer is family coordination. Hawthorn weddings often come with a large bridal party, extended family, three or four generations in attendance, and a packed morning schedule. Sheridan and the Kohort team travel to Grace Park, Auburn Village, or the hotel and run a mapped-backwards timeline so bride, bridesmaids, mother-of-the-bride, grandmother and flower girls all land on time. No one sits in a car wet-haired while the photographer waits.

The fifth answer is pre-wedding colour. Most bridal clients are colour clients too. Balayage, gloss, discreet grey coverage, soft highlights and bond-building treatments get sequenced from four months out through to two weeks before the wedding. Taylah, Zoe, Billie and Sheree handle the colour while Sheridan plans the styling. For Hawthorn mothers-of-the-bride, the grey-coverage appointment in the week before the wedding is often booked alongside the trial.

The sixth answer is finishing. A bridal set that holds through a Leonda reception into a dance floor at 11pm is layered: Kevin Murphy Session Spray Flex for the working set, Kérastase Laque Couture for the lock, Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray for grip on day-two hair, and Kérastase Elixir Ultime shine spray for photographic glow. Every product has a reason, nothing gets sprayed for sprayings' sake.

Bridal and Event Styling Process and What to Expect

Consultation first. Booked six to nine months out from the wedding, twenty minutes in salon or via email. We discuss venue, date, dress silhouette, headpiece or veil, bridesmaid palette, mother-of-the-bride preferences and any school formal or family function overlap. A rough direction is agreed before the trial is booked.

Trial next. Booked three to four months out from the wedding, ninety minutes with your stylist. Arrive with clean, dry, day-two hair, any accessories you plan to wear, and a curated set of references. We work through two or three concepts, finalise the direction and photograph the result for the day-of reference.

Pre-wedding colour and maintenance. Your colourist maps the calendar from the consultation forward. Balayage or full-head colour three to four months out. Gloss or toner six weeks out. Keratin smoothing, if relevant, four to six weeks out. Final trim one to two weeks out. No major colour changes in the fortnight before the wedding.

Wedding day styling. On the morning of the wedding, Sheridan and the team travel to your location (a Grace Park family home, a Hawthorn hotel room or the venue itself) and style bride, bridesmaids, mother-of-the-bride and family in a coordinated sequence. The timeline is mapped backwards from the ceremony with a thirty-minute photography buffer.

Touch-up kit. A small kit with bobby pins, travel hairspray, shine spray and comb. Most day-of touch-ups are a single pin reset, not a restyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book a Hawthorn wedding at Kohort?

Six to nine months ahead for Saturday weddings in peak season (October, November, February, March). Three to four months for weekday or off-peak weddings. Trials are booked three to four months out.

Do you travel to the venue for day-of styling?

Yes. Sheridan and the team travel to Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell, Balwyn, Richmond, the CBD and most inner Melbourne wedding locations. Regional Victoria (Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Macedon) is doable with additional travel and accommodation fees.

Can you do my colour as well as my bridal styling?

Yes. Most bridal clients are also colour clients. Taylah, Zoe, Billie or Sheree coordinate the colour calendar from consultation through to the final touch-up before the wedding.

What about Scotch, MLC and Xavier school formals?

Yes. The October to November private school formal pipeline is a regular booking cluster. Book from September. Grace, Taylah, Zoe and Sheree all take formal bookings.

Can you style my bridesmaids, mother-of-the-bride and grandmother?

Yes, coordinated on the wedding morning. We regularly style across three generations on a single Boroondara wedding morning.

What if I want an editorial look rather than a classic bridal style?

Book Taylah. Editorial waves, sculpted shapes and modern statement looks are Taylah's wheelhouse.

I am the mother of the bride, can I book just for myself?

Yes. Mother-of-the-bride styling is a regular booking. Sheree is a strong call for refined styling on shorter hair or bobs.

Will my hair hold for twelve hours across ceremony, photos and reception?

If styled properly, yes. Sheridan's approach uses a combination of pre-prep, strategic pinning, and finishing products so the look holds from morning through to the dance floor.

What venues do you style for around Hawthorn?

Leonda by the Yarra, Studley Park Boathouse, Como House, Quat Quatta, Vogue Ballroom in Burwood, the RACV City Club, the Point Albert Park, and Grace Park private home receptions.

Can you handle a big bridal party of eight or ten?

Yes. We can block-book two or three stylists across a morning for larger parties. Email salon@kohort.com.au at least three months ahead to confirm availability.
