Bridal and Event Styling in South Yarra, Kohort Studio Richmond
Fashion-forward bridal and event hair for South Yarra brides, Chapel Street regulars and Spring Racing attendees, led by Sheridan May Hair.
South Yarra's Dedicated Bridal and Event Styling Specialists
South Yarra bridal lives at the intersection of fashion and polish. A South Yarra wedding often starts with a morning prep in a Domain Road apartment or the Lyall, a Como House garden ceremony under the jacarandas, photos along the Royal Botanic Gardens edge, and a reception at Luminare in South Melbourne, Quat Quatta in Ripponlea or a hatted private dining room off Chapel Street. The brief leans editorial, modern, and photograph-first, with a high tolerance for texture and a low tolerance for anything that reads suburban bridal-magazine.
Kohort Studio sits at 234 Bridge Road, Richmond, eight to twelve minutes across the Yarra from South Yarra Station and Chapel Street. Our bridal and event styling practice is led by Sheridan May Hair, a Melbourne bridal specialist with a long book spanning classic chignons, editorial waves and veiled styling. Grace supports the team with classic bridal and bridesmaid styling at an accessible price point. Taylah brings an editorial eye for high-impact updos and trackside looks. Zoe rounds out the team with polished modern finishes, and Sheree handles short-hair bridal and mother-of-the-bride bookings.
The South Yarra bridal calendar mirrors the broader Melbourne wedding book. October and November are peak season (Spring Racing Carnival runs concurrent with wedding season), February and March are strong for autumn weddings, May and June pick up for winter indoor receptions, and the Chapel Street fashion crowd drives a steady stream of engagement party and editorial shoot bookings across the year. Our Saturday book at peak season fills six to nine months ahead.
Spring Racing is its own wave. Derby Day, Melbourne Cup Day, Oaks Day and Stakes Day at Flemington each generate a peak of trackside styling, and Caulfield Guineas in October plus Cox Plate at Moonee Valley bring their own booking surges. South Yarra clients cross Punt Road for trackside styling and often book back-to-back for a full Cup Week run. If you are planning a marquee or members' booking, speak to us by August or September at the latest.
What Makes Kohort the Best Place for Bridal and Event Styling Near South Yarra
The first answer is the bridal lead. Sheridan May Hair is a specialist who has styled Melbourne weddings for years, with a portfolio built on classic and editorial work. She styles for how hair moves across a full day: ceremony, photos, reception, dance floor. Not for the first shot and a hope the set holds.
The second answer is the trial itself. A Kohort bridal trial is a ninety-minute appointment with clean, dry hair prepped at home. We work through two or three concepts drawn from your references, land on a direction, and adjust in the chair. You leave with the final look agreed, product recommendations for the week leading in, and a timeline for the wedding morning. For South Yarra brides who keep a Pinterest board with three hundred pins, this is the session that cuts it down to one.
The third answer is the consultation before the trial. For complex weddings (veil, headpiece, fresh flowers, vintage comb, heirloom jewellery) we run a fifteen to twenty minute consultation before the trial is booked. Venue, dress, photographer style and personality all shape the direction. A Como House afternoon ceremony reads differently to a 7pm Luminare reception, and your stylist will ask about both.
The fourth answer is day-of coordination. Sheridan and the Kohort bridal team travel to the hotel, family home or venue for day-of styling, running a coordinated timeline across bride, bridesmaids, mother of the bride, mother of the groom and flower girls. For Chapel Street weddings with a five-person bridal party, the sequencing is as important as the styling. The team maps everything backwards from the ceremony start with a thirty-minute buffer for photos.
The fifth answer is pre-wedding colour. Most of our bridal clients are also colour clients. Balayage, gloss, tone refresh, signature blonde maintenance, keratin smoothing and bond-building treatments all get sequenced from four months out through to two weeks before the wedding. Taylah, Zoe and Billie handle the colour side while Sheridan plans the styling.
The sixth answer is the product wall. A bridal set that holds twelve hours at a December Quat Quatta wedding is layered: Kevin Murphy Session Spray Flex for the working set, Kérastase Laque Couture for the lock, Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray for grip on day-two hair, and Kérastase Elixir Ultime shine spray for photographic glow. No single spray does the job.
Bridal and Event Styling Process and What to Expect
Consultation first. Booked six to nine months out from the wedding where possible. Twenty minutes in salon or via email. We discuss venue, date, dress silhouette, headpiece or veil, bridesmaid palette, mother-of-the-bride preferences and family constraints. A direction is agreed before the trial is booked.
Trial next. Booked three to four months out from the wedding, ninety minutes with your stylist. Arrive with clean, dry, day-two hair, your veil or headpiece if you have it, and a curated set of references. We work through two or three concepts, finalise the direction, and photograph the final result from every angle so the day-of styling is exact.
Pre-wedding colour and maintenance. Your colourist maps the calendar from the consultation forward. Balayage or full-head colour three to four months out. Gloss or toner six weeks out. Keratin smoothing, if relevant, four to six weeks out. Final trim one to two weeks out. No major colour changes in the fortnight before the wedding.
Wedding day styling. On the morning of the wedding, Sheridan and the team travel to your location (a Chapel Street apartment, the Lyall, the Hotel Como, or the venue itself) and style the bride, bridesmaids, mother-of-the-bride and any additional family in a coordinated sequence. The timeline is mapped backwards from the ceremony start with a thirty-minute buffer.
Touch-up kit. We pack a small kit with bobby pins, a travel hairspray, a shine spray and a comb. Most day-of touch-ups are a single pin reset, not a restyle.

Getting to Kohort from South Yarra
Kohort is at 234 Bridge Road, Richmond, eight to twelve minutes from South Yarra depending on Punt Road. For a trial appointment, driving is the usual call. Head north on Punt Road, cross the Yarra, turn right onto Bridge Road. Kohort is on the north side between Lord Street and Docker Street. Metered on-street parking is available, or use Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre 500 metres east for longer stays.
For wedding-day styling, we travel to your location. Sheridan and the team will come to you in South Yarra, whether you are getting ready at a Chapel Street apartment, the Lyall, Hotel Como or at the venue itself.
Public transport is straightforward. Tram 78 runs north up Chapel Street and across to Richmond. Tram 8 runs east along Toorak Road and connects through to Swan Street trams. South Yarra Station is two stops from Richmond Station, then a ten-minute walk up Bridge Road.
For Spring Racing week, book early and allow extra time. Punt Road and the Flemington corridor are loaded across the full racing fortnight, and a rideshare with a 7am pickup is often more reliable than driving.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I book a South Yarra wedding at Kohort?
Six to nine months ahead for Saturday weddings in peak season (October, November, February, March). Three to four months for weekday or off-peak weddings. Trials are typically booked three to four months out from the wedding date.
Do you travel to the venue for day-of styling?
Yes. Sheridan and the team travel to South Yarra, Toorak, Prahran, Windsor, the CBD and most inner Melbourne wedding locations. Regional Victoria (Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Macedon) is doable with additional travel and accommodation fees. Confirm at consultation.
Can you do my colour as well as my bridal styling?
Yes. Most of our bridal clients are also colour clients. Taylah, Zoe, Billie or Sheree will coordinate the colour calendar from consultation through to the final touch-up two weeks before the wedding.
What about Flemington or Spring Racing styling?
Yes. Cup Week is one of our busiest styling stretches. Book six weeks ahead for Derby Day, Melbourne Cup Day, Oaks Day or Stakes Day. Marquee travel is possible for Flemington bookings.
Can you style my bridesmaids, mother-of-the-bride and flower girls?
Yes, coordinated on the wedding morning in a planned sequence. We run family group bookings regularly, from two-bridesmaid intimate weddings to ten-person bridal parties.
What if I want an editorial look rather than a classic bridal style?
Book Taylah. Editorial waves, sculpted shapes and modern statement looks are Taylah's wheelhouse. Classic chignons and veiled looks sit best with Sheridan.
I am the mother of the bride, can I book just for myself?
Yes. Mother-of-the-bride styling is a regular booking. Sheree is a strong call for refined styling on shorter hair or bobs. Sheridan and Zoe handle longer styled-up looks.
Will my hair hold for twelve hours across ceremony, photos and reception?
If styled properly, yes. Sheridan's approach uses a combination of pre-prep (day-before wash for grip), strategic pinning, and finishing products so the look holds from morning through to the dance floor.
Can I bring my dress or veil to the trial?
Yes, and we encourage it. At minimum, bring clear photos of the dress and any accessories. If you can physically bring the veil, headpiece or hair jewellery, the trial is much more accurate.
What venues do you style for in and around South Yarra?
Como House, Luminare, Quat Quatta, Leonda by the Yarra, the Point Albert Park, Atlantic Group venues, Vogue Ballroom in Burwood, the RACV City Club, plus Chapel Street private dining rooms and Domain Road private homes.
