Toorak's Dedicated Bridal and Event Styling Specialists

Toorak bridal is its own category. A Toorak wedding is rarely a casual affair. Leonda by the Yarra on the Studley Park bend. Como House under the jacarandas. St Catherine's chapel for the morning photos. A reception at the National Gallery of Victoria or the Melbourne Club. A rehearsal dinner at Entrecôte or France-Soir. Black tie, floor length, polished to photograph on a Canon 5D from ten metres back. The brief is almost always classic rather than boho, editorial rather than bridal-magazine, and detailed in a way most bridal trials do not bother with.

Kohort Studio sits at 234 Bridge Road, Richmond, twelve to sixteen minutes across the river from Toorak Village. Our bridal and event styling practice is led by Sheridan May Hair, a specialist in classic and editorial bridal with a long book of Melbourne wedding work. Taylah supports with editorial styling and a strong eye for colour-into-styling continuity. Zoe rounds out the bridal team with a polished, considered approach to cut-to-style work. Sheree contributes on short-hair and pixie event styling, plus mother-of-the-bride and sister-of-the-bride bookings.

The Toorak bridal calendar runs most heavily through October (the start of Spring Racing and wedding season), November (peak wedding season into Cup Week), February (autumn weddings and early Christmas-new-year engagements), March (autumn sees the Melbourne wedding bookings that did not want summer heat) and May through June (winter wedding pivot). Our book is usually full six to nine months ahead for Saturday weddings at peak, so plan early.

Spring Racing styling runs concurrently. Derby Day, Melbourne Cup Day, Oaks Day and Stakes Day each generate a wave of Flemington styling bookings across Toorak, South Yarra and the Boroondara suburbs. Our Cup Week book closes about six weeks out. If you are planning a marquee booking at Flemington, speak to us in September at the latest.

What Makes Kohort the Best Place for Bridal and Event Styling Near Toorak

The first answer is Sheridan. Sheridan May Hair is a bridal specialist who has been styling Melbourne weddings for years, with a portfolio that spans classic chignons, editorial waves, low buns with pearl detail, soft half-ups, slick ponytails, and detailed veiled looks. She styles with an eye for how the hair will move across a full day, ceremony, photos, reception, dance floor, not just how it photographs in the first shot.

The second answer is the trial process. A Kohort bridal trial is ninety minutes in the chair with Sheridan or your chosen stylist, with clean, dry hair prepped at home. We work through two or three concepts drawn from your references (Pinterest, screenshots, magazine clippings) and land on the final direction. Adjustments are made in the trial itself. By the end of ninety minutes, you have a look agreed, product recommendations for the week leading into the wedding, and a timeline for the wedding morning. Some salons run bridal trials as twenty-minute add-ons. We do not.

The third answer is the consultation before the trial. For complex weddings (veil, headpiece, flowers, jewellery, accessories) we will book a fifteen to twenty minute consultation ahead of the trial to discuss the whole brief, look at your dress reference, understand the venue, and align on what makes sense. A bridal look for Como House in an early afternoon ceremony is different to a bridal look for a 6pm reception at the Melbourne Club. Venue, light, dress and personality all shape the final direction.

The fourth answer is the coordination for the day itself. Sheridan and the Kohort bridal team travel to the wedding venue or the hotel for day-of styling, coordinating across the bride, bridesmaids, mother of the bride, mother of the groom and flower girls. We will map the timing backwards from the ceremony and schedule hair and makeup in a sequence that lands everyone on time. For Toorak weddings with five bridesmaids and a large family, the day-of logistics are as important as the styling itself.

The fifth answer is the pre-wedding colour. Most of our bridal clients are also colour clients, and the colour work running into the wedding is as important as the styling on the day. Balayage, gloss, tone refresh, signature blonde maintenance, grey coverage, keratin smoothing, these are the services we sequence from four months out through to two weeks before the wedding so the colour is settled, toned, and camera-ready. Taylah and Zoe coordinate the colour while Sheridan plans the styling.

Bridal and Event Styling Process and What to Expect

Consultation first. Ideally booked six to nine months out from the wedding, though shorter windows are workable. Twenty minutes in salon or via email. We will discuss venue, date, dress style, headpiece or veil, colour of the bridesmaids, mother-of-the-bride preferences, and any family constraints. A rough styling direction is agreed before the trial.

Trial next. Booked three to four months out from the wedding, ninety minutes with your stylist. Come with clean, dry hair, any accessories you plan to wear (veil, comb, clips, flowers), and a curated set of references. We will work through two or three concepts, finalise the direction, take detailed photos from multiple angles for the day-of reference.

Pre-wedding colour and maintenance. Your stylist will map the colour calendar from the consultation forwards. Balayage or full-head colour three to four months out. Gloss or tone six weeks out. Keratin smoothing, if relevant, four to six weeks out. Final cut one to two weeks out. No major colour changes in the fortnight before the wedding.

Wedding day styling. On the morning of the wedding, Sheridan and the team will travel to the bride's location (hotel suite, family home, or venue) and style the bride, bridesmaids, mother-of-the-bride and any additional family members in a coordinated sequence. Timing is mapped backwards from the ceremony start, with a thirty-minute buffer for photographs and last touches.

Touch-ups and product recommendations for the day. We provide a small styling kit with bobby pins, a travel hairspray, a shine spray and a comb in case anything needs freshening up between the ceremony and the reception.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book a Toorak wedding at Kohort?

Six to nine months ahead for Saturday weddings in peak season (October, November, February, March). Three to four months for weekday or off-peak weddings. Trials are typically booked three to four months out from the wedding date.

Do you travel to the wedding venue for day-of styling?

Yes. Sheridan and the team travel to Toorak, South Yarra, Boroondara, the CBD and most inner Melbourne wedding locations. Regional Victoria (Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Macedon) is also doable with additional travel and accommodation fees. Confirm at consultation.

Can you do my colour as well as my bridal styling?

Yes. Most of our bridal clients are also colour clients. Taylah, Zoe, Billie or Sheree will coordinate the colour calendar from consultation through to the final touch-up two weeks before the wedding. Sheridan then handles styling.

What about Flemington or Spring Racing styling?

Yes. Cup Week is one of our busiest styling stretches. Book six weeks ahead for Derby Day, Melbourne Cup Day, Oaks Day or Stakes Day. For a marquee booking at Flemington, we can travel on-site.

Can you style my bridesmaids, mother-of-the-bride and flower girls?

Yes, coordinated on the wedding morning in a planned sequence. We handle family group bookings regularly, from two-bridesmaid intimate weddings to ten-person bridal parties.

What if I want an editorial look rather than a classic bridal style?

Book Taylah. Editorial waves, sculpted shapes, modern statement looks are Taylah's wheelhouse. Classic chignons and veiled looks sit best with Sheridan.

I am the mother of the bride, can I book just for myself?

Absolutely. Mother-of-the-bride styling is a regular booking. Sheree is a strong call for refined, elegant styling on shorter hair or bobs. Sheridan and Zoe handle longer styled-up looks.

Will my hair hold for twelve hours across ceremony, photos, reception?

If styled properly, yes. Sheridan's approach uses a combination of pre-prep (day-before wash for grip), strategic pinning, and finishing products so the look holds from morning through to the dance floor. We also provide a small touch-up kit for the day.

Can I bring my dress or veil to the trial?

Yes, and we encourage it. At minimum, bring clear photos of the dress and any accessories. If you can physically bring the veil, headpiece or any hair jewellery you plan to wear, the trial is much more accurate.

What if I want to change my mind between trial and wedding?

Ask early. Small adjustments in the week before are usually fine, a softer wave instead of a firmer curl, a lower bun instead of a mid bun. Major direction changes (updo to down, for example) are possible but may require a second trial booking.
