What Is a Blonde Service?
Blonde is less a single service and more a family of techniques. Balayage, foilayage, babylights, full head foils, half head foils, face framing, baby-lights, colour refresh, tone refresh and root touch-ups all sit under the blonde umbrella. The right one for you depends on where you are starting from, where you want to end up, and how often you actually want to come back to the salon. None of those answers are universal, which is why every blonde service at Kohort starts with a consultation and a plan.
At its core, going blonde means lifting the pigment out of your hair with lightener, then layering in a tone that gives you the finish you want. Cool ashy blonde, buttery honey blonde, creamy vanilla, platinum, beige, mushroom, champagne, icy Scandi white or a soft lived-in bronde all come from the same two-step process handled in different ways. The artistry is in the placement, the formula, the timing and the finishing.
Melbourne blondes have a particular look. Richmond, Fitzroy, Collingwood, South Yarra and Hawthorn clients tend to want blonde that is photographable in natural light, soft enough to grow out without a harsh line, and healthy enough to still feel like hair rather than straw after the service. That is the brief we work to at Kohort. Blonde that you would happily be photographed in without a filter.
Going blonde is not a decision to make lightly if you have a significant colour history. Box dye, previously foiled hair, henna, hot-tool damage and salt-and-chlorine exposure all change the starting canvas and therefore the plan. A responsible blonde transformation sometimes takes two or three sessions spaced across several months. We would rather tell you that at consultation than surprise you at the chair. Colour correction is a separate category of work with its own specialists, and for some clients the blonde journey begins there before we can start lifting properly. See colour correction for more.
How KOHORT Approaches Blonde Services
Blonde at Kohort is treated as design work first and chemistry second. Your colourist is looking at your face shape, your hairline, the way you part your hair, whether you wear it up or down, your skin tone, your eye colour, and how the blonde will read in daylight versus under warm indoor lighting. That reading informs where the brightness goes, how wide the face framing sits, and which tones work against your complexion.
We run every blonde service with bond support built in. Before lightener touches hair with any colour history, our colourists will often apply L'Oreal Metal Detox. This is the pre-colour treatment that neutralises metal particles trapped inside the cortex from tap water, old box dye or mineral build-up. Neutralising those metals before lift makes the result cleaner, more predictable, and far gentler on the hair. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons blonde clients end up with brassy regrowth or snapped ends within a few weeks.
Through the lightening process, Olaplex Bonding Treatment or K18 Molecular Repair is woven into the formula to protect the internal bonds of the hair as the pigment is removed. Olaplex rebuilds broken disulphide bonds in real time. K18 takes a different approach, using a bioactive peptide that reconnects keratin chains at the cortex. Our colourists choose between the two, or layer them, based on the condition of the hair on the day. An Olaplex Chelating Treatment is also available for clients with heavy mineral or metal load, giving lightener the cleanest possible canvas.
Toning is where an average blonde becomes a great one. Too warm and you land in yellow. Too cool and you look grey and flat. Our colourists tone with the undertone of your natural hair colour, your skin tone and your eye colour in mind, not to a one-size formula. A cool-ash blonde designed for pale cool skin reads completely differently on warm olive skin, and the formula changes accordingly.
The co-working model at Kohort changes the pace of a blonde appointment. Each stylist books their own clients with their own buffer built in, so a three to four hour full blonde service is genuinely three to four hours of your colourist's attention. You are not shuffled between chairs, foils, shampoo bowls and a finisher. One colourist, one service, one result.
Finishing is taken seriously. Every blonde service at Kohort closes with a Kerastase Fusio Dose Ritual or a Davines Liquid Luster gloss depending on what the hair needs. Fusio Dose is our go-to for instant luminosity and up to eight washes of shine. Liquid Luster is a lighter lamellar shine refresh. Both leave hair soft, glossy and photograph-ready. If your service includes a cut, the cut happens after the colour so the shape flatters the placement rather than cutting off the painted ends.
Retail is matched to the service. Our shelf carries Kerastase Blond Absolu for cool tone maintenance, K18 Molecular Repair leave-in for ongoing bond care, Davines Alchemic shampoo and conditioner for tone refresh at home, and Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector for weekly at-home strengthening. What your colourist recommends is sitting within arm's reach of the chair, and they will not push product you do not need.

Billie, Creative and Artistic Blonde
Thirty years of colour experience. Billie is a favourite for blonde with a creative lean. Warm coppers blended into blonde, soft pastels layered over bleach, lived-in cool blonde on shorter cuts and editorial placements. Currently welcoming existing clients only. Book with Billie.
Sheridan, Lived-In and Soft Natural Blonde
Sheridan is the colourist to book if you want your blonde to look like you spent six months in summer, not like you just left a salon. Soft, natural, grown-out-friendly placement is her signature. Strong on babylights and seamless root melts. Book with Sheridan.
Grace, Foundation Blonde and Natural Placement
A third-year apprentice trained at Biba and Billie Jean Hair. Grace offers accessible pricing on foundation blonde services and natural placements. Strong on entry-level balayage and first-time blonde consultations. Book with Grace.

Zoe, Cool Blonde and Foilayage
Zoe is the colourist guests book when they want blonde with cooler, brighter payoff. She often combines balayage with targeted foils through the face framing sections, known as foilayage, for extra brightness where it shows. Book with Zoe.

Blonde Process, What to Expect
1. Consultation
Your colourist looks at your hair dry, in natural light, and asks about colour history, home care, how much warmth you tolerate, and how often you realistically want to come in. A plan is agreed before any product is mixed. For first-time blondes we strongly recommend a free fifteen-minute in-salon consultation before booking.
2. Preparation
L'Oreal Metal Detox or Olaplex Chelating Treatment if hair history calls for it. Sectioning. A strand test if your hair is unpredictable. You will be gowned and prepped with a coffee if you want one.
3. Application
Depending on the chosen technique, your colourist will apply foils, paint freehand, or combine the two. A full head foil service takes longer than a balayage and runs three to four hours. A half head takes two to three. Balayage runs two to three. Root touch-ups run ninety minutes.
4. Processing
Lightener is allowed to develop. Your colourist monitors lift closely because hair moves faster in some sections than others. Bond support is layered in during processing where appropriate.
5. Toning
Lightener is rinsed, a bespoke toner is applied to neutralise warmth and lock in the final shade. This is usually between five and twenty minutes depending on the formula.
6. Finishing
Kerastase Fusio Dose or Davines Liquid Luster gloss, blow dry, style, retail recommendations and an honest rebook window. No surprise charges.
Blonde Pricing at KOHORT
Blonde pricing at Kohort varies by stylist, technique and hair length. As a guide, balayage typically starts from around $300 for shorter hair and $350 to $450 for mid to long hair. Full head foils start from around $350 and run higher for long, dense or heavily coloured hair. Half head foils start from around $250. Root touch-ups start from around $130 for natural tones.
Add-on treatments are priced separately and strongly recommended for lifted hair. K18 Molecular Repair from $50. Olaplex Bonding Treatment from $50. L'Oreal Metal Detox from $45. Kerastase Fusio Dose Ritual at $50. Davines Liquid Luster at $25.
Because blonde pricing scales with length, density and current colour history, we do not quote full blonde services without seeing the hair. Surprise charges at the chair are the single most common complaint we hear about other salons, and we refuse to do business that way. If you want a quote before booking, email salon@kohort.com.au with photos of your current hair and your reference look, or book a free fifteen-minute consultation in salon.
Every stylist at Kohort is an independent colourist setting their own pricing, so rates vary between chairs. That variation reflects experience, specialty and demand. Grace's foundation rates are more accessible because she is in her final apprentice year. Sheree, Billie, Taylah and Zoe sit at the established colourist rate. Sheridan sits between.
Aftercare for Blonde Hair
Blonde is an investment, and aftercare is what decides whether it lasts six weeks or twelve. The rules are straightforward and worth sticking to.
Wash less. Three times a week maximum. Every extra wash pulls tone and gloss out of lifted hair. Dry shampoo between washes is your friend.
Sulphate-free shampoo is non-negotiable. Sulphates strip colour faster than anything else in the bathroom. Kerastase Blond Absolu is our top recommendation for cool blonde maintenance. Davines Alchemic and the K18 peptide shampoo also live on our retail shelf.
Purple or silver shampoo once a week, not every wash. Left on for three to five minutes is enough. Over-toning at home leaves hair flat, dull and slightly grey. Once a week keeps the yellow out without tipping too far.
Heat protect before any hot tool, every time, no exceptions. Heat on dry unprotected hair is the single fastest route to dull blonde ends. Kerastase and Davines both carry heat protectants we use in salon.
Weekly mask. K18 Molecular Repair mask, Kerastase Masquintense Blond or Davines NouNou are the three we rotate. K18 is the heaviest repair, Masquintense Blond tones and conditions, NouNou is the deep moisture option.
Chlorine and salt water degrade blonde faster than almost anything else. Before you swim, wet your hair with tap water and apply a leave-in. That keeps the hair shaft saturated and reduces how much chlorine or salt actually gets absorbed. Rinse immediately after.
Refresh with a gloss between appointments. A Fusio Dose or Liquid Luster gloss at the six to eight week mark can extend a blonde service into a full three to four month window before the next full service. Many of our regulars book a gloss mid-cycle as a matter of course.
Who Blonde at KOHORT Is Ideal For
Blonde at Kohort is ideal for guests who want colour that looks considered, photographs well, and is maintained properly between appointments. It suits people who understand blonde is a commitment, not a one-visit transaction. If you want hair that looks salon-finished without the obvious stripes, tell-tale regrowth line or brassy orange roots that give away a rushed blonde service, you are in the right place.
It suits guests across every hair type we see. Fine hair, thick hair, curly hair, coarse hair, virgin hair, previously coloured hair and short hair have all had successful blonde services at Kohort. The technique and the plan change with the hair. What does not change is the care around bond protection and finishing.
Blonde may not be the right fit if you want to be platinum in one session from very dark virgin hair, if you have heavy box dye history you are not prepared to address over multiple appointments, or if you hate any warmth in your hair. Those are all conversations we will have honestly at consultation, and in some cases we will recommend a different path or a longer plan.
Blonde for Clients Across Inner Melbourne
Our blonde book pulls from every inner Melbourne suburb. Richmond locals walk in from the surrounding streets, Bridge Road apartments and the Cremorne tech precinct, often pairing blonde maintenance with a lunch break or a Friday afternoon off. Cremorne guests from the SEEK, REA and MYOB offices around Church Street book polished signature blonde that reads considered under office lighting and on camera calls. Burnley riverside locals lean toward soft, natural blonde balayage paired with long layers that hold up under a bike helmet on the Yarra trail.
From south of the river, South Yarra and Toorak clients cross Punt Road for signature blonde maintenance and often book every six to eight weeks. Prahran and Windsor guests lean toward the bolder, more fashion-forward end, often asking for cool icy blonde, creative foil work, or blonde layered with copper or cherry tone work through the mid-lengths. Chapel Street hospitality and retail staff from both pockets book blonde that stays photographable through double shifts.
From the north, Fitzroy and Fitzroy North guests book blonde with an artistic lean. Sharper placement, bolder contrast, editorial brightness, creative toning. Collingwood regulars come across from Smith Street, Gertrude Street and the Collingwood Yards creative precinct for blonde with the most adventurous briefs in the city. Northcote and Fairfield guests come down High Street and Heidelberg Road for lived-in natural blonde and copper-leaning blonde that flatters the inner north aesthetic. Clifton Hill and Alphington guests book softer blonde with subtle grey blending and a grown-out-friendly placement.
From the east, Hawthorn, Hawthorn East, Kew, Camberwell and Balwyn clients are our polished classic blonde demographic. The Boroondara blonde brief is typically about invisible grey coverage, refined placement, healthy-looking finishing and longevity. Many of these guests book three or four times a year, with bridal and school-formal season driving extra appointments.
Carlton and Carlton North clients, including a strong University of Melbourne academic cohort, bring a natural blonde brief more often than a fashion blonde. Abbotsford guests from the Convent arts pocket request warm, natural blonde with a lived-in feel. East Melbourne clients closer to the MCG and Fitzroy Gardens book refined blonde or soft dimensional work suited to Parliament and Collins Street professional life. St Kilda clients mix beach-friendly low-maintenance blonde with fashion colour for the arts and hospitality scene. Melbourne CBD apartment-belt clients usually book longer Friday afternoon blonde slots and pair them with a keratin finish for corporate-ready polish.
No matter which suburb you are coming from, Kohort is fifteen minutes or less by car, tram or train from most of inner Melbourne.
Frequently Asked Questions About Blonde at KOHORT
What is the best blonde service for me?
That depends on your starting point, goal colour and how often you want to come in. Balayage for low maintenance, foilayage for brightness with low maintenance, full head foils for uniform bright blonde, half head foils for top and face frame only, babylights for softness, root touch-up for maintenance between full services. Your consultation will match you to the right one.
Can I go blonde in one session?
Sometimes yes, often no. If your starting point is virgin light-to-medium brown hair with no colour history, one session is often possible. If your starting point is dark, previously coloured, box dyed or compromised, expect two to three sessions spaced weeks apart. This is a chemistry conversation, not a time conversation.
How long does blonde last at Kohort?
Balayage stretches to eight to twelve weeks. Foils typically refresh at four to six weeks. Root touch-ups hold for four to six weeks. A mid-cycle gloss can extend any blonde service by several weeks.
Do you do platinum and icy blonde?
Yes. Our colourists deliver icy Scandi blondes, platinum, mushroom, beige, vanilla cream, honey, champagne and cool ash. The plan will depend on where you are starting from.
Is blonde hair damaging?
All lightening services impact hair. With pre-colour Metal Detox, bond support through the service with Olaplex or K18, good finishing and proper home care, damage is kept to a minimum. Guests who follow aftercare typically keep their blonde hair in better condition than guests who have never coloured and over-styled with heat.
Can you fix box dye before going blonde?
Usually yes. An Olaplex Chelating Treatment and L'Oreal Metal Detox are used before lightening to strip metals and minerals from previous colour. Some cases require multiple sessions. Bring a photo of your hair history to consultation.
How much does blonde cost at Kohort?
Balayage from around $300. Full head foils from around $350. Half head foils from around $250. Root touch-ups from around $130. Add-on treatments from $25 to $50. Precise pricing depends on your stylist, hair length and density.
Do I need a consultation before booking?
For a first blonde with us, yes. A free fifteen-minute in-salon consultation confirms plan, time and quote. Returning clients can rebook directly.
Can I get blonde on short hair?
Yes. Sheree, Billie and Taylah all work beautifully on short hair. Technique changes but the outcome does not suffer.
Can I get blonde on curly hair?
Yes. We specialise in blonde for curly, coily and wavy hair, with extra focus on porosity-safe formulas and bond support throughout.
Which stylist should I book for blonde?
For lived-in soft blonde, book Sheridan or Taylah. For bright cool blonde or foilayage, book Zoe. For creative blonde, book Billie. For short hair blonde, book Sheree. For accessible pricing, book Grace. If unsure, email salon@kohort.com.au and we will match you.
Where is Kohort and how do I get there?
234 Bridge Road, Richmond VIC 3121. Burnley and East Richmond stations are eight to ten minutes walk. Trams 48 and 75 run along Bridge Road directly past the door.
Is there parking near the salon?
Yes. Two-hour metered street parking on Bridge Road and free longer parking on residential side streets within a block or two.
Do you offer blonde packages?
Not rigid packages, but most colourists can quote blonde, cut and treatment as a combined booking at a slightly friendlier rate than individual services. Ask at consultation.
