South Yarra's Dedicated Haircut Specialists
South Yarra clients know what a good haircut actually costs, and what it should deliver. Chapel Street retail and hospitality staff, Toorak Road professionals, fashion industry locals who anchor the northern end of Chapel, finance and law partners in the Domain pocket, and the residential apartment and townhouse base in between all run a high haircut spend. Photo-ready hair is part of the South Yarra uniform, and the brief is usually specific. A signature bob, a collarbone lob, a long layered cut that moves, a modern shag, a pixie or a men's tailored cut with a skin fade. In every case, the standard is precision, polish, and a cut that still sits correctly at week nine.
Kohort is eight to twelve minutes across Punt Road and the Yarra at 234 Bridge Road, Richmond. We sit on the north side of Bridge Road between Lord Street and Docker Street, which puts us on a straight commute from Chapel Street, Toorak Road and the Domain. Our cutting book is one of the most diverse in the inner Melbourne hair market, and the South Yarra-to-Toorak corridor is a major feeder into almost every category.
What makes Kohort different is that haircut is not one cut. We have seven cutters across the salon, each with their own specialty, and your booking is matched to the cutter for your specific brief rather than the first chair with availability. Zoe for bobs, French bobs, A-line bobs and modern shags. Sheree for precision short hair, classic bobs, pixies and bixies. Billie for razor work across shags, mullets, wolf cuts and editorial bobs (existing clients only). Taylah for long layers, long bobs, lived-in lobs and editorial cutting paired with her balayage. Sheridan for lived-in soft cuts. Elodie for glass-finish polished bobs and long hair. Karmen as our salon director, cutting and coordinating across all categories.
The South Yarra haircut brief varies. Chapel Street retail staff often book modern bobs or long lobs with a lived-in blonde sitting underneath. Toorak Road professionals run classic bobs paired with grey coverage. Fashion industry clients frequently ask for French bobs, A-line bobs or editorial modern shags. Domain pocket residents lean classic and polished, often booking long layered cuts or glass-finish lobs. Hospitality workers from the strip book lower-maintenance cuts with strong shape. Men in the catchment book tailored cuts with skin fades, classic scissor-over-comb work, or longer textured styles. Our book handles all of it.
What Makes Kohort the Best Place for Haircuts Near South Yarra
The first reason is cutter depth. Seven cutters across the team means every South Yarra brief has a specialist. A bob goes to Zoe, Sheree, Elodie or Taylah depending on the version. A shag goes to Billie, Zoe, Taylah or Sheridan. A mullet or wolf cut goes to Billie, Zoe or Taylah. A pixie goes to Sheree or Billie. Long layered work goes to Taylah, Elodie or Zoe. Generalist salons put you with whoever is free. We put you with the cutter the cut actually calls for.
The second reason is the dry consultation. Every haircut at Kohort starts with a dry read of your hair. Natural parting, crown cowlick, nape growth, density through the back, how the hair actually falls against your face. Cuts that skip the dry read collapse to one side or miss their shape within days. Reading your hair dry is non-negotiable for us.
The third reason is the time each cut gets. Our co-working model means bookings are sized for the cut rather than squeezed around colour clients. A bob is sixty to ninety minutes. A shag, mullet or wolf cut is ninety minutes to two hours. A pixie or bixie is sixty to ninety minutes. Long layered work is sixty to ninety minutes. That time is built into the booking so the cut can actually be executed properly.
The fourth reason is integrated cut and colour. A significant portion of the South Yarra haircut book runs with colour underneath. Signature blonde, balayage, foilayage, lived-in blonde, grey coverage, gloss and toner work. Our co-working model means cut and colour can be planned together in one visit. Taylah's cut-plus-balayage, Elodie's glass-finish bob with gloss, or Zoe's bob with a colourist slot on the same day are all common bookings.
The fifth reason is product alignment. We style with Kerastase, Davines and K18 at the chair and stock the exact products used on your hair on the retail wall. Kerastase Chronologiste for bobs and polished finishes. Davines OI Oil for lived-in texture. K18 Mist and leave-in for repair. You leave with the one or two pieces that keep your cut sitting correctly at home.
Haircut Process and What to Expect
Consultation
Dry hair, natural light, a conversation about references, face shape, styling habits and any cowlicks or growth patterns. Your cutter reads your hair before any scissors come out.
Wash and Prep
Wash, condition, scalp massage and a bond-builder treatment if needed. Towel dry, comb through.
Cutting
The cut is executed in sections, with frequent stepping back to check balance. Wet cutting for precision baselines on bobs, dry cutting for shags, mullets and short hair where texture needs reading as it sits, or a mixed approach for most long layered work.
Dry and Refine
The hair is dried and your cutter refines the cut with the hair sitting naturally. This is where the final three percent gets locked in.
Finish and Style
A styled blow dry using Kerastase, Davines or K18 depending on your hair and the cut. Your cutter shows you the technique so you can replicate it at home.
Rebook
Eight to twelve weeks for most cuts, six to eight for shorter bobs, French bobs and shorter shags. Fringe trims between main appointments are no extra charge for existing clients.

Getting to Kohort from South Yarra
Kohort is at 234 Bridge Road, Richmond, on the north side between Lord Street and Docker Street. From South Yarra, the direct route is straight up Punt Road across the Yarra, then right onto Bridge Road. Kohort is about four hundred metres along on the left. Eight to twelve minutes outside peak. If Punt Road is heavy, the alternative is Toorak Road north to Chapel Street, Alexandra Avenue along the river, across to Church Street and onto Bridge, which is slightly longer but usually flows.
For rail commuters, South Yarra Station runs the Sandringham, Pakenham, Cranbourne and Frankston lines. From the city, change to the 48 or 75 tram east along Flinders onto Bridge Road. The 78 tram along Chapel Street connects north through Cremorne and you can walk across to Bridge via Church Street.
Cyclists can follow the Yarra Trail from Alexandra Avenue and loop up at Cremorne to Bridge Road. Bike rings sit directly out the front.
Metered on-street parking runs along Bridge Road, Lord Street and Docker Street. A two-hour metered spot is plenty for most haircut appointments. Free longer parking is available on residential side streets within a block or two.
Haircut Pricing at Kohort
Haircuts at Kohort are priced by the cutter and by the cut. As a guide:
Women's cuts typically start from around $110 for a maintenance trim and sit between $130 and $220 for most full cuts. Bobs, shags, mullets, wolf cuts, long layers and pixies all fall in that range depending on the cutter and the time needed.
Men's cuts start from around $70 and sit up to around $110 for senior cutter work. Skin fades and longer textured cuts are priced at the higher end.
Fringe trims between main appointments are no extra charge for existing clients. Event styling and blow-dries are priced separately.
Each cutter sets their own rate. A senior specialist rate differs from an apprentice rate. For a precise quote before booking, email salon@kohort.com.au with a photo of your current hair and a reference image.
