A Salon for Ivanhoe Locals
Ivanhoe has a particular kind of inner-northeast character. Art-deco Heidelberg Town Hall at the top of Upper Heidelberg Road, the new Ivanhoe Library and Cultural Hub built in 2021, the row of heritage interwar shopfronts along Upper Heidelberg Road, the leafy residential streets in the Ivanhoe East and Eaglemont pockets, the Yarra Flats Park on the southern edge, and the annual Boulevard Christmas Lights on The Boulevard every December. It is an established, relatively affluent suburb with a demographic that spans multi-generational long-time residents, professional families in their forties and fifties, and the parents-of-alumni from Ivanhoe Grammar and Ivanhoe Girls Grammar. Kohort is in Richmond on Bridge Road, about nine and a half kilometres south, and our Ivanhoe client base is one of the more consistent cohorts coming in from the north-east.
The Ivanhoe brief is polished rather than fashion-forward. What we book most often is classic, considered work: well-structured lived-in blondes that photograph well in natural light, proper root touch-ups that read seamless rather than obvious, grey blending done with restraint, soft balayage in warm sandy or honey tones, rich chocolate brunette with subtle face-framing, a sharp bob or a long-layered shape with weight line, and bridal and mother-of-the-bride work for the season of weddings that runs through from spring to autumn. The Ivanhoe client has usually had good hair done elsewhere, is loyal to the stylist rather than the salon, and will travel for the right one.
A sizeable share of our Ivanhoe bookings are mother-of-the-bride or mother-of-the-groom appointments booked six to eight weeks ahead of a family wedding. Sheridan May Hair specialises in bridal and event work and has done weddings at the Abbotsford Convent, the Fairfield Boathouse, Xavier College, the Victoria Yacht Club and half a dozen Yarra Valley estates that Ivanhoe mothers-of-brides book through. A trial run six to eight weeks before the event, a morning-of appointment at the salon, and an optional on-location finish at the venue all sit inside her standard rhythm.
Beyond the event category, we see a steady flow of Ivanhoe working professionals: lawyers, doctors, specialists from the Austin Hospital up the hill in Heidelberg, executives, architects, consultants. This demographic books a polished, low-maintenance colour schedule, usually every ten to twelve weeks, with a gloss top-up in between. The co-working studio model at Kohort matches this client particularly well. Every stylist is an independent practitioner who owns their own chair and their own diary. The person who consults is the person who cuts, colours and finishes. There is no handover, no salon-manager pressure and no conveyor-belt feel. For an Ivanhoe client who has been loyal to the same stylist for ten years, that continuity is the point.
The third Ivanhoe cohort is the older, long-time resident who books a cut-and-blow-dry rotation every four to six weeks. Usually coming in for a polished short-layered or bob shape, a standing root colour, and a blow-dry finish. Grace and Sheree both run a lot of this work. It is the kind of considered, relationship-based chair that is hard to find in a high-volume chain salon.
Getting to Kohort from Ivanhoe
Ivanhoe to 234 Bridge Road is fifteen to twenty minutes off-peak, depending on which pocket of Ivanhoe you are starting from and the time of day. From Upper Heidelberg Road proper, the fastest route is south on Upper Heidelberg Road, right onto Heidelberg Road at Fairfield, through Clifton Hill, continuing along Queens Parade, south down Smith Street or Hoddle Street, and east onto Bridge Road. From Ivanhoe East and Eaglemont, drop down The Boulevard, left along Heidelberg Road, and the same route south. From the Lower Heidelberg Road side, Burgundy Street through the Heidelberg Village leads you onto Heidelberg Road the same way.
The Eastern Freeway and Citylink combination from Bulleen Road can be faster in off-peak, but Heidelberg Road is usually the more reliable call. Peak hour adds ten to fifteen minutes, mostly at the Hoddle Street and Victoria Street bottlenecks. Weekends are clean.
Parking at Kohort is straightforward. Metered on-street parking on Bridge Road, Lord Street and Docker Street is usually available outside peak. For bookings of three hours or more, Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre car park, five minutes walk east of the salon, is the safer call and a lot of our Ivanhoe regulars use it as a default.
Public transport is realistic. The Hurstbridge train line runs through Ivanhoe Station, Eaglemont Station and Darebin Station, and a train to Jolimont puts you fifteen minutes walk east through Richmond to the salon, or you can transfer to the 48 or 75 tram at Flinders Street and ride east along Bridge Road. About forty-five minutes door to door. Several Ivanhoe clients book morning appointments and train in to avoid the parking question entirely.
Rideshare from Ivanhoe runs thirty to forty dollars off-peak. For an event-morning booking where you do not want to arrive flustered, this is a trip a lot of our mother-of-the-bride clients factor in.
Services Ivanhoe Clients Love at Kohort
Here is what the Ivanhoe diary looks like on a typical month.
Polished Lived-In Blonde and Balayage
The Ivanhoe blonde is polished. Hand-painted balayage with a soft smudge root, toned to warm honey, sandy or champagne rather than icy ash, finished with a Kérastase Fusio Dose and K18 bond treatment for shine and integrity. It photographs beautifully in natural light and grows out cleanly over five to six months. For the working-professional and mother-of-the-bride client base, the combination of polish and low maintenance is the whole appeal. Read more on the Balayage and Lived-In Blonde pages.
Grey Blending and Classic Root Colour
Grey blending is one of the bigger Ivanhoe categories. Strategic highlighting that lets salt-and-pepper carry gracefully, lowlights to add depth, soft root colour that reads seamless, and full grey transitions staged across twelve to eighteen months without a harsh line. Grace runs a lot of this work, and so does Zoe.
Classic Bobs, Long Layers and Event Shapes
The Ivanhoe cut brief is usually polished, weight-lined and classic in feel rather than editorial. Sharp bobs with considered weight, long layered shapes with face-framing, polished curtain bangs, graduated shorter styles. For the mother-of-the-bride cohort, this shape brief is standard. Explore Haircuts and Pixie & Short Hair.
Bridal and Event Hair
Sheridan May Hair is our bridal and event specialist and has done weddings, milestone birthdays, Oaks Day and formal-season appointments for Ivanhoe clients across the last several years. A bridal trial six to eight weeks out from the event, followed by morning-of styling at the salon or on location at the venue. For mothers-of-the-bride, grandmothers-of-the-bride, bridesmaids and guests, she runs a whole-party booking through her Timely page.
Colour Correction
Ivanhoe brings the more polished end of correction work: previous salon work that has gone brassy, root colour that has built up too heavy over several visits, highlights that have grown out with banded regrowth. We run these as three to six hour appointments and stage them across two visits when needed. Olaplex and K18 bond builders through the process. See Colour Correction.
Keratin Smoothing and Nanoplasty
Melbourne humidity, school-run mornings and the back-end of a long working week all make frizz management a real category. Keratin Smoothing gives three to four months of smoother hair. Nanoplasty is the formaldehyde-free alternative.
Hair Treatments
Every colour service at Kohort includes a bond treatment. The Kérastase Fusio Dose Ritual is our signature shine-and-nourishment add-on, very popular with the Ivanhoe cohort. K18 Molecular Repair standard on any lifted service. Olaplex, L'Oréal Metal Detox and Bhave all on the retail wall. See Hair Treatment.
Men's Cuts
Ivanhoe books us men's scissor cuts with considered fades, classic cuts, beard trims, and subtle grey blending for professional clients who want to slow the transition. Forty-five minutes to an hour.

Why Ivanhoe Clients Choose Kohort
There are good salons in the Heidelberg Village, in Eaglemont, along Upper Heidelberg Road, and over in Kew. So why take the eighteen minute drive south for a Richmond studio?
The first answer is the co-working model. Kohort is not a chain, and every stylist is an independent practitioner. No handovers, no rushed finishes, no salon-manager pressure. The person who consults is the person who cuts, colours and finishes, and the relationship lasts as long as the client wants it to. A lot of our Ivanhoe clients came to us following a stylist they had been loyal to for years, and the co-working model is what let the stylist build the practice they wanted.
The second answer is the specialist mix. Seven stylists with distinct strengths: short hair, bridal, glass-hair blonde, editorial colour, and polished all-rounders. For an Ivanhoe client booking a mother-of-the-bride service, the right specialist is booked. For a professional booking a polished lived-in blonde, a different specialist is booked. That precision is the difference.
The third answer is the product and treatment line. Kérastase, Davines, Olaplex, K18, L'Oréal Metal Detox and Bhave. The Fusio Dose Ritual is one of our most-booked add-ons specifically from the Ivanhoe cohort, for the shine and nourishment finish.
The fourth answer is the studio itself. Kohort is a calm room: natural light, considered fitout, quiet music. For an Ivanhoe client who has been in the industry-standard chain environment for years and wants the opposite, the shift is felt on the first visit.
The fifth answer is continuity. Once you settle with a stylist, you stay with them. No reassignment, no handover, no staff-turnover disruption to a ten-year relationship.
Landmarks & Life in Ivanhoe
Ivanhoe stretches from the Yarra River in the south up through Ivanhoe proper to the Heidelberg and Eaglemont borders. Upper Heidelberg Road is the main commercial strip, running from the Darebin Creek in the north down through the Ivanhoe shopping centre, with Heidelberg Town Hall at the top of the strip in its heritage-listed 1937 art-deco building. The Ivanhoe Library and Cultural Hub, opened in 2021 as a thirty-one million dollar civic building, sits as the modern counterpart to the Town Hall. The heritage 19th-century and interwar shopfronts along Upper Heidelberg Road have been protected and carry the suburb's visual identity.
Ivanhoe Station, Eaglemont Station and Darebin Station on the Hurstbridge line serve the suburb, with train into the CBD in about twenty minutes. The 251 bus connects Ivanhoe through to Kew, and the 546 bus runs north-south. The Yarra Trail runs along the southern edge of Ivanhoe through the Yarra Flats, with one of Melbourne's quieter bushland-fringed cycling and running paths. The Boulevard winds through Ivanhoe East and hosts the annual Christmas lights, which is a citywide December destination. Darebin Parklands on the western edge and Ivanhoe Park give the suburb its green character.
Ivanhoe Grammar School and Ivanhoe Girls Grammar anchor the private-school presence and are a major demographic driver for the suburb. The Ivanhoe Primary School, Eaglemont Primary and Ivanhoe East Primary catchments serve the public-school families. Ivanhoe sits between Heidelberg to the north, Alphington and Fairfield to the south, Eaglemont and Rosanna to the east, and Thornbury and Preston to the west across Darebin Creek.

First-visit Saturday: four to six weeks. Bridal trial or event booking: six to eight weeks. Weekday colour: inside two weeks is usually fine.
I have been loyal to my current stylist for ten years. What happens at Kohort?
Because every stylist owns their own book, the relationship lasts as long as you want. You are not reassigned, not handed over, and not tied to the salon if your stylist leaves.
What products do you carry?
Kérastase, Davines, Olaplex, K18, L'Oréal Metal Detox and Bhave. Your stylist recommends one or two products that match what they did in the chair, not a full bag.
