South Yarra's Dedicated Keratin Smoothing Specialists

South Yarra works on a particular schedule. Chapel Street retail from nine. A board meeting on Collins Street by ten. Gym at lunch. Back for client meetings. Drinks at Top Paddock or Entrecôte. A photo call at a Como House function. A Spring Racing invitation on Saturday. A beach weekend in Portsea. Every one of those moments assumes hair that looks polished without being fussed with for forty minutes in front of a mirror.

Keratin smoothing is the service that delivers on that schedule. Done properly, it cuts the frizz, relaxes the wave, adds shine and shortens your morning styling routine from forty minutes to ten. It does not change the length or shape of your hair. It does not give you a pin-straight look unless you push it all the way. What it does is give you a softer, glossier, more manageable version of the hair you already have, with three to four months of longevity before you need to book again.

Kohort Studio at 234 Bridge Road, Richmond, sits ten to fifteen minutes across the Yarra from Chapel Street and has built a keratin smoothing practice tailored to the South Yarra brief. Grace leads the keratin service with strong technical training and an all-round colour eye. Billie supports with thirty years of experience across colour and smoothing. The service pairs well with balayage and signature blonde, which is one of the most common South Yarra combo bookings. Smooth, glossy, polished blonde hair that does not need forty minutes of intervention.

The clients who book keratin smoothing with us from South Yarra tend to fall into a handful of profiles. Finance, law and consulting professionals who want six-to-twelve weeks of low-intervention hair. Chapel Street retail and hospitality staff who are front of house all day and need hair that photographs well through a double shift. Bridal clients planning a summer wedding and wanting smooth, humidity-proof hair for the day and the honeymoon. Portsea and Sorrento weekenders who want hair that behaves against salt air and humidity. Fashion and media workers who live under studio lights and airport air-conditioning.

What Makes Kohort the Best Place for Keratin Smoothing Near South Yarra

Keratin smoothing is a service where the stylist's hand matters more than the product on the shelf. Two salons can carry the same Bhave keratin range and deliver different results. What separates Kohort from most of the Chapel Street options is the time, the technique and the combination with other services.

Time is the first answer. A proper keratin smoothing appointment at Kohort is two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half hours depending on hair length, density and whether you are pairing it with colour. That is the time required for the correct process, shampoo with a clarifying agent, apply keratin, process, blow-dry smooth, flat iron in small sections to set, rinse and finish. Chain salons often quote the same service at ninety minutes to two hours, which usually means cut corners on the flat-iron setting phase. The result is a service that fades at week five instead of holding for three to four months.

Technique is the second answer. Grace's keratin smoothing is delivered in thin, clean sections with careful flat-iron work. Every section gets enough heat for long enough for the keratin to bond to the cuticle, without crossing into heat damage. The difference between a week-five fade and a four-month service is exactly in this sequence.

The third answer is pairing. Keratin smoothing and colour are often done in the same window of time, but the order matters. Colour first, then keratin. If you reverse the order, the keratin forms a barrier that stops colour penetrating evenly. We run colour appointments first (balayage, foils, gloss or tone) and schedule keratin smoothing two weeks later, or we pair the two on the same day with the correct sequence. South Yarra clients booking the combined service are often walking out with a full balayage-and-smooth for a major event four weeks out.

The fourth answer is product choice. Kohort runs Bhave Keratin for our traditional smoothing service, with the option of a formaldehyde-free nanoplasty treatment for clients who prefer a gentler chemistry. Bhave is an Australian keratin brand with a strong smoothing track record. Nanoplasty is the newer, gentler, amino-acid-based alternative. Your stylist will recommend which suits your hair type and the result you want.

The fifth answer is the aftercare. Every keratin smoothing at Kohort ends with a conversation about the first seventy-two hours (do not wash, do not tie up, do not tuck behind the ears) and the following three to four months (sulphate-free shampoo, weekly mask, heat protection). We carry Kérastase Blond Absolu and Discipline, K18 Molecular Repair, and Bhave take-home shampoo and conditioner on the retail wall.

Keratin Smoothing Process and What to Expect

Consultation first. Your stylist looks at your hair dry, asks about frizz tolerance, styling time, how often you straighten and how much wave you want to keep. We will discuss whether traditional keratin smoothing or nanoplasty is the right fit. The two produce slightly different results, keratin is a firmer smooth with a glossier finish, nanoplasty is a gentler, softer result that holds wave while removing frizz.

Shampoo is next. Two rounds of a clarifying shampoo to strip any silicone, mineral or styling-product residue from the hair. This step is non-negotiable; without it, the keratin does not bond properly.

Towel dry. Section the hair.

Apply the keratin or nanoplasty treatment in thin sections from root to ends, working systematically across the head. Processing time is twenty to forty minutes depending on the product and your hair's porosity.

Blow-dry smooth. No rinse between the product and the blow-dry for a traditional keratin; the product is being set into the hair through heat. The blow-dry is aimed at a glass-smooth finish, no wave, no bend.

Flat iron in fine sections. This is the technical heart of the service. Small sections, enough heat (around 210 to 230 degrees for traditional keratin), slow pass, multiple passes. This is where the keratin actually bonds to the cuticle.

Rinse (or cool, depending on product). Some keratins rinse immediately, others have a seventy-two-hour cure window before the first wash. Your stylist will tell you which protocol applies.

Finishing is a light gloss or oil (Kérastase Elixir Ultime, K18 leave-in mist) and a styled blow-dry. You leave with a written aftercare plan and an approximate rebook window of three to four months.

Which Kohort Stylist Does Keratin Smoothing

Grace leads keratin smoothing at Kohort. Trained at Biba and Billie Jean Hair, Grace brings strong all-round technical training with a calm, thorough consultation style. She is comfortable with traditional Bhave keratin and with nanoplasty, and will match the product to your hair type rather than the other way around. Book with Grace.

Billie supports the smoothing practice with thirty years of colour and cut experience. If you are combining a complex colour service with keratin smoothing, Billie's eye for the full hair picture makes her a strong pairing choice. Currently welcoming existing clients only. Book with Billie.

For South Yarra clients booking keratin smoothing alongside balayage, foilayage or a signature blonde, we will often pair Grace for the smoothing with Taylah or Zoe for the colour work. The scheduling is coordinated so the colour runs first and keratin runs either on the same day or two weeks later depending on hair condition.

Keratin Smoothing Pricing at Kohort

Keratin smoothing pricing varies by hair length, density and the product used. As a guide, Bhave Keratin smoothing typically starts from around $400 for short to mid-length hair and $500 to $750 for mid to long or thick hair. Nanoplasty is priced similarly, scaling with length.

A combined keratin smoothing and balayage (or foilayage, or signature blonde service) is usually quoted as two separate services with a small package saving where scheduling allows. Colour runs first, keratin second.

A gloss and keratin refresh between full smoothing services (usually at the eight to ten week mark if you want to extend longevity) runs at around $180 to $250 depending on length.

Included in every keratin smoothing: clarifying shampoo, keratin or nanoplasty product, sectioned flat-iron setting, rinse where applicable, gloss or oil finish, styled blow-dry and written aftercare plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does keratin smoothing last?

Traditional Bhave Keratin smoothing at Kohort holds for three to four months before gradual fade. Nanoplasty sits at two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half months. Longevity depends on wash frequency, water type (Melbourne tap water is mineral-heavy which shortens smoothing), and heat-styling habits.

Does keratin smoothing straighten my hair completely?

Not necessarily. Keratin smoothing relaxes frizz and softens wave. If you want pin-straight, we push the process further during flat-iron setting. If you want to keep your natural wave minus the frizz, we dial it back. Your stylist will agree the target finish at consultation.

Is there formaldehyde in your keratin?

Our Bhave keratin service uses a low-formaldehyde formula that is compliant with Australian standards. If you prefer a formaldehyde-free option, our nanoplasty service uses amino acids instead. Both sit on our service menu.

Can I colour my hair and do keratin smoothing at the same time?

Yes, but the order matters. Colour runs first, keratin second. If you are balayaging and smoothing in the same day, plan for a five to seven hour combined appointment. Alternatively, we split across two visits two weeks apart.

Can I wash my hair straight after keratin smoothing?

For traditional Bhave keratin, no. The first seventy-two hours are a cure window, do not wash, do not tie up, do not tuck behind your ears, do not wear a hat. For nanoplasty, some protocols allow washing after twenty-four hours. Your stylist will confirm which applies.

Does keratin smoothing work on thick, coarse hair?

Yes, particularly well. Coarse, frizzy, thick hair often sees the most dramatic improvement in manageability and drying time. Expect a longer appointment window and potentially a stronger product load.

Will keratin smoothing damage my hair?

Done properly, no. The treatment is applied at temperatures within the safe heat range for healthy hair and pairs well with bond-support products. Hair often comes out shinier and more manageable than before. Done badly with over-processing or burnt-out flat iron work is where damage happens.

How long is a keratin smoothing appointment?

Two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half hours for the smoothing alone. Five to seven hours if paired with a full balayage or colour service on the same day.

Can I book a keratin smoothing before my wedding?

Yes. Book four to six weeks before the wedding so the smoothing has fully cured and your hair has found its settled, daily styling rhythm. Any bridal trials should happen after the smoothing, not before.

Do you sell Bhave aftercare?

Yes. Bhave shampoo, conditioner and leave-in treatments sit on our retail wall alongside Kérastase Discipline, K18 Molecular Repair and sulphate-free maintenance products. Your stylist will recommend what you need.
