Mullet Wolf Cut Collingwood

Modern mullets and wolf cuts executed without the suburban softening, razor-cut shapes for Collingwood's Smith Street and Gertrude Street crowd by cutters who recognise the references.

Collingwood's Dedicated Mullet and Wolf Cut Specialists

The modern mullet and the wolf cut are the defining fashion haircuts of the 2020s, and Collingwood is ground zero for the Melbourne version. Smith Street, Gertrude Street, Collingwood Yards, Peel Street's breweries, the warehouse-converted design studios and the queer community across the suburb have made this cut part of the local uniform. What you see on a Saturday afternoon walking down Smith Street is the modern Australian interpretation, short disconnected crown, soft curtain or micro fringe, longer layers at the back, razor-cut texture through the ends. Gender-neutral, reference-led, and worn with confidence.

The difference between a mullet and a wolf cut is real but soft. A mullet is tighter on top with clear disconnection between short crown and longer back. A wolf cut is a bit more layered overall, often with more weight in the fringe and soft layering that spills into a longer back. Both share the same reference vocabulary, same texture, same disconnect between shorter sections and longer ends. Both need to be cut by someone who understands the reference, because a bad mullet or a bad wolf cut is one of the more visible bad haircuts you can walk around with.

The Collingwood brief specifically tends to be confident. Disconnection is real rather than softened. The fringe is committed to, either a curtain fringe or a micro bang. Layers through the back are razor-cut for texture rather than scissor-cut for uniform length. Often paired with a creative colour, a fashion copper, a bleach and tone, a silver or a cherry. Often worn on curly or wavy hair with the natural texture treated as part of the cut.

What Collingwood clients do not want is a suburban softened version that trims the mullet into a layered shag because the cutter was worried it would be too much. They want the cut they referenced.

Kohort Studio at 234 Bridge Road Richmond is seven to ten minutes south of Smith Street by car. We have become one of the trusted mullet and wolf cut destinations for Collingwood clients who want a cutter who recognises the references, uses the razor confidently and executes without the softening.

What Makes Kohort the Best Place for Mullet and Wolf Cut Near Collingwood

Modern mullet and wolf cut work is craft-heavy. Not every salon does it well. Here is why Kohort is the right chair.

First, the specialist cutters. Mullet and wolf cut at Kohort is led by Billie, Zoe and Taylah. Billie is our razor specialist. Thirty years of industry experience and a genuinely confident razor technique, which is what a proper modern mullet or wolf cut requires. Zoe runs considered, polished work across cut and colour with a strong eye for how the cut sits on a finished look. Taylah brings an editorial sensibility to cut work, comfortable with referenced briefs and gender-neutral work.

Second, reference-led consultation. Your cutter does not guess. Bring references. Instagram, Pinterest, screenshots, editorial tear-outs. The more specific the reference, the cleaner the outcome. Our cutters talk the references through with you before picking up scissors or razor.

Third, the razor. A mullet or wolf cut worth wearing requires razor work through the layers, particularly on the longer back sections. Scissor-only versions land flat and miss the texture that makes the cut work. Billie in particular is known for her razor technique.

Fourth, the pace. Every stylist at Kohort owns their own chair. A modern mullet or wolf cut appointment is genuinely an hour to ninety minutes of dedicated cut time, with a proper consultation, dry cut to establish the shape, and a finish that shows you how it sits on day three hair rather than day one blow-dry. Volume salons compress that into a forty-five minute slot and it shows.

Fifth, the pairing. A lot of Collingwood mullet and wolf cut clients pair the cut with a creative colour, a fashion copper, a bleach and tone, or a lived-in blonde. Kohort books the cut and the colour in a single appointment with the cut coming after the colour so the shape flatters the placement. Creative colour is led by Billie, Sheree, Taylah and Zoe. You can book both services with the same stylist in a single sitting.

Mullet and Wolf Cut Process and What to Expect

A mullet or wolf cut at Kohort starts with consultation. Ten to fifteen minutes with your cutter, references on the table, a real conversation about what you want, how short you are willing to go, where the disconnection lands, what your fringe looks like and how you want to wear the cut day to day.

Hair type matters. Curly and wavy hair wear the cut differently to straight hair, and the cut is designed around your actual texture rather than a straight-blown idealised version of it. Fringe placement is agreed before any cutting starts.

Step one is a dry cut to establish the shape. Modern mullet and wolf cut work is a dry cut because the shape needs to be visible as you cut. Wet cutting produces a uniform length that loses the disconnection.

Step two is the razor work through the longer sections. Razor is the difference between a textured modern cut and a scissor-cut version that looks dated. Billie in particular uses the razor confidently.

Step three is fringe work. Curtain fringes, micro bangs, soft eye-skimmers. Fringe placement is cut freehand and adjusted to sit with your natural hair direction.

Step four is the crown work. The short disconnected crown is what makes the cut read as a mullet or wolf rather than a layered shag. The crown is cut shorter, with the disconnection clearly visible when you pull the top sections back.

Step five is a finish. We dry the hair down with product, usually a sea salt spray, a styling cream or a light mousse depending on your texture, and show you how the cut sits. You will leave with a realistic sense of what it looks like on day three hair, not just polished on day one.

Most clients rebook at six to eight weeks to maintain the shape.

How far is Kohort from Collingwood?

Seven to ten minutes by car via Smith Street, Victoria Parade, Hoddle Street and Bridge Road.

What is the difference between a mullet and a wolf cut?

A mullet has tighter disconnection between a short crown and longer back. A wolf cut is a bit more layered overall, often with more weight in the fringe and softer transitions. Both share the same texture and reference vocabulary.

Does Kohort use a razor for mullet and wolf cuts?

Yes. Razor work is the difference between a modern textured cut and a scissor-cut version that reads flat. Billie leads razor work with thirty years of experience.

Can I get a mullet or wolf cut on curly hair?

Absolutely. Curly and wavy hair wear the cut beautifully. We cut to your natural texture rather than a blown-out idealised version.

How often should I rebook?

Every six to eight weeks to maintain the disconnection and fringe shape. Some clients stretch longer with a softer, grown-out version of the cut.

Can I pair a mullet with a fashion colour?

Yes, and a lot of Collingwood clients do. Billie takes mullet cut with fashion copper, cherry, bleach and tone or creative colour in a single sitting. Book both services together.

What should I bring to consultation?
