Fitzroy's Dedicated Mullet and Wolf Cut Specialists
Fitzroy is arguably the most fashion-forward hair market in Melbourne. Brunswick Street, Gertrude Street, Smith Street, Rose Street Artists' Market, the queer community across Gertrude and Smith and the creative and music scene that has kept Fitzroy genuinely bohemian all feed a relentless mullet and wolf cut book. These cuts live here. Fitzroy clients arrive with moodboards pulled from Sal Salcedo, Evan Joseph, Seou Sal and the wider international editorial scene, and they expect the cutter to recognise the reference without a slideshow.
Kohort is ten to twelve minutes south of Fitzroy at 234 Bridge Road, Richmond. The direct route is down Brunswick Street or Smith Street, left onto Victoria Parade, across Hoddle Street and right onto Bridge Road. Our mullet and wolf cut book is one of the most fashion-forward in the inner Melbourne hair map, and Fitzroy is the biggest single feeder suburb into that book. Billie anchors the razor mullet and wolf cut work with thirty years of razor work behind her. Zoe cuts modern softer mullets and wolf cuts with curtain fringes. Taylah cuts editorial mullets and wolf cuts planned to pair with her balayage.
The Fitzroy mullet and wolf cut brief splits across a few references. Brunswick Street and Gertrude Street clients tend to lean full editorial. Pronounced disconnection, piecey razor fringes, visible step between top and back, fashion colour underneath. Rose Street and Smith Street creatives lean slightly softer, often asking for wolf cuts with curtain fringes that read approachable editorial rather than full costume. The queer and gender-affirming brief regularly sits in this book too, often coming in with references from international queer stylists. Our cutters understand that brief, and we run it as a considered cut rather than a default.
Fitzroy neighbours feed the same book. Collingwood clients share the Smith Street rotation. Brunswick clients come across Lygon Street. Fitzroy North clients lean slightly softer, often booking wolf cuts with curtain fringes. Carlton and Carlton North students round out the book with younger fashion-wearable work. The inner-north mullet and wolf cut scene is concentrated across this cluster and our book reflects that exactly.
What Makes Kohort the Best Place for Mullet and Wolf Cuts Near Fitzroy
The first reason is Billie. Thirty years behind a razor and a book full of inner-north regulars who have been crossing the city for her mullet and wolf cut work for years. Disconnection is the defining technique in a mullet, and Billie's disconnection reads deliberate rather than accidental. Her razor work creates the piecey feathered texture that modern mullets and wolf cuts rely on. Currently welcoming existing clients only, but her work anchors the category at Kohort.
The second reason is reference recognition. Our cutters recognise the editorial references Fitzroy clients typically bring. Sal Salcedo. Evan Joseph. Seou Sal. The wider international editorial scene. That recognition saves the first ten minutes of consultation, and it means the brief is understood properly the first time rather than softened into a safer version.
The third reason is the range of cutters. A mullet and a wolf cut are not one service. Billie cuts razor mullets and editorial wolf cuts. Zoe cuts modern softer mullets and wolf cuts with curtain fringes for clients who want the shape without the heaviest razor texture. Taylah cuts editorial mullets and wolf cuts planned to pair with her balayage, which suits Fitzroy clients who want the cut and the colour planned together. You book the cutter for the version of the cut you actually want.
The fourth reason is the dry consultation and dry cutting approach. Mullets and wolf cuts cut wet from a diagram consistently miss the brief. Our cutters read your hair dry, check how it actually grows and falls, identify cowlicks and density patterns, and agree the cut with your references before scissors start. Disconnection, layering and fringe weight all need to be read against how the hair sits, not how it sits wet.
The fifth reason is fringe work. The fringe is the most visible part of a mullet or wolf cut. Curtain fringes, piecey razor fringes, micro fringes and swept fringes all need different techniques, and all need to be read off your cowlick pattern. A fringe cut against your cowlick fights you every morning. A fringe cut with it falls right. Our cutters read this carefully for every mullet and wolf cut.
Mullet and Wolf Cut Process and What to Expect
Consultation
Dry hair, natural light, a conversation about references, face shape, styling habits and fringe decision. Your cutter reads your hair dry and agrees the exact version of the mullet or wolf cut before cutting starts.
Wash and Prep
Wash, condition, towel dry, detangle.
Internal Layering and Top
The layering through the top and face framing is cut first, usually with a combination of razor and shear work.
Disconnection and Back
The back length is cut, and the disconnection step between the top and the back is established.
Fringe
The fringe is cut last because the shape of the rest of the cut dictates where the fringe should sit.
Dry and Refine
Your cutter dries the hair and refines the weight, disconnection and edges with the hair sitting naturally.
Finish
Styling product, technique demonstration for home, retail recommendations, and a rebook window.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Kohort mullet different to a Brunswick Street mullet?
Usually, yes. Our cutters run a dry consultation and a dry-cut finishing pass, and the disconnection is cut while reading the hair as it sits rather than wet from a diagram. That is why our mullets hold their step and do not soften into shags after two weeks.
Can I bring reference photos?
Please do. Our cutters are comfortable with editorial, referenced cutting and recognise Sal Salcedo, Evan Joseph, Seou Sal and the wider editorial scene. A moodboard saves consultation time and keeps the brief tight.
What is the difference between a mullet and a wolf cut?
A mullet is defined by length disconnection between top and back. A wolf cut is a hybrid between a shag and a mullet, with heavy internal layering and fringe plus length disconnection. Wolf cuts read less extreme than mullets but still carry the disconnected length.
How long does a mullet or wolf cut appointment take?
Ninety minutes to two hours including consultation, wash, cut and blow dry. Restyle cuts may take longer.
Can I pair the cut with copper, cherry, pastel or bleach and tone?
Yes. This is one of the most common Fitzroy bookings at Kohort. Colour runs first, cut runs second, so the shape flatters the placement.
How often should I rebook a mullet or wolf cut?
Six to eight weeks. Mullets and wolf cuts outgrow their disconnection before they outgrow their length. Fringe tidies every three to four weeks in between.
Will a mullet or wolf cut suit my face shape and hair type?
With the right version, almost certainly. Square jaws carry mullets with softer fringes. Round faces carry wolf cuts with longer face framing. Oval faces carry any version. Fine hair, thick hair, curly hair and straight hair can all carry these cuts with the cutting strategy adjusted.
Do you do gender-affirming mullets and wolf cuts?
Yes. Our cutters consult without a binary brief and have a strong book of gender-affirming mullet and wolf cut clients. Bring your references.
How much does a mullet or wolf cut cost at Kohort?
From around $150 for maintenance and $180 to $240 for a first cut or restyle. Each cutter sets their own rate.
How far in advance should I book from Fitzroy?
Saturday first visits four to six weeks. Mid-week usually inside two weeks.
