Collingwood's Dedicated Shag Haircut Specialists

Collingwood is one of the most fashion-forward hair markets in Melbourne. Smith Street, Gertrude Street, Peel Street, Collingwood Yards and the warehouse-conversion creative block run a constant rotation of mullets, wolf cuts, shags, bowl cuts and fashion-first layered cutting. The shag in particular lives here. It is the cut that sits at the centre of the inner-north music and design scene, and the brief is specific. Heavy internal layering. A disconnected, piecey perimeter. A curtain fringe or a piecey razor fringe cut with the cowlick. Copper or cherry colour underneath, or a clean bleach and tone. Collingwood shag clients arrive with clear references and an expectation that the cutter recognises them without explanation.

Kohort is eight to ten minutes south of Collingwood at 234 Bridge Road, Richmond. The direct route is down Smith Street, left onto Victoria Parade, across Hoddle Street and onto Bridge Road. Our shag book is one of the highest-booked cutting categories and Collingwood is the biggest single feeder suburb into that book. Billie anchors the razor shag work with thirty years behind the razor. Zoe cuts modern soft shags with curtain fringes. Taylah cuts editorial shags and long shags paired with her balayage. Sheridan cuts lived-in soft shags with gentle face framing.

The Collingwood shag brief skews editorial. Smith Street regulars book Billie's razor shags with pronounced disconnection and piecey fringes. Gertrude Street and Peel Street clients often book editorial shags with fashion colour, copper, cherry, pastel or peach. The Collingwood Yards creative block brings references from Sal Salcedo, Evan Joseph and the wider editorial scene, cuts that sit outside a conservative brief. Our cutters recognise those references, which is a large part of why the Collingwood shag book sits here rather than with a suburban chain.

Collingwood neighbours feed the same book. Fitzroy clients share the Brunswick Street and Gertrude Street rotation. Abbotsford Convent creatives cross Johnston Street. Brunswick clients come across Lygon. Northcote clients run down Smith Street. Clifton Hill clients run straight south on Hoddle. The inner-north shag belongs to a specific cluster of suburbs and our book reflects that.

What Makes Kohort the Best Place for Shag Haircuts Near Collingwood

The first reason is Billie. Thirty years behind a razor and a book full of Smith Street, Gertrude Street and Peel Street regulars who have been crossing inner Melbourne for her shag work for years. Her razor shags are the reason our inner-north book has the reputation it does. The razor is the right tool for a modern Collingwood shag because it creates the feathered, piecey perimeter and disconnected layering that the brief calls for. Billie is currently welcoming existing clients only, but her work anchors the category at Kohort.

The second reason is the range of cutters. A shag is not one cut. Zoe cuts modern soft shags with curtain fringes for clients who want the shape without the heaviest razor texture. Taylah cuts editorial shags, long shags and butterfly cuts, often paired with her balayage so cut and colour sit together. Sheridan cuts lived-in soft shags with gentle face framing for clients who want the cut to read natural rather than sharp. Each cutter owns a different version of the shag, so you book the cutter for the cut you actually want.

The third reason is the dry-cut finishing pass. Most local salons cut the shag wet, from a diagram, and finish there. The shag reads softer than expected once it dries. At Kohort, every shag runs a dry-cut finishing pass after the blow dry, where the disconnection, layer weight and fringe are refined while the hair sits exactly as it will sit the next day. That pass is the single biggest reason our shags hit the brief consistently.

The fourth reason is fringe work done properly. A shag without a proper fringe is missing half its identity. Curtain fringes, piecey razor fringes, micro fringes, full fringes and long swept fringes each need a different technique. Your cutter reads your fringe cowlick before committing. Fringes cut against the cowlick fight you every morning. Fringes cut with it fall into place without effort.

The fifth reason is colour alignment. Collingwood shag clients often pair their cut with copper, cherry, pastel or peach fashion colour, or with bleach and tone. Our colour team runs strong fashion-colour work, and cut plus colour can be planned together under one roof. Colour runs first, cut runs second, so the shape flatters the placement.

Shag Haircut Process and What to Expect

Consultation

Dry hair, natural light, a conversation about references, face shape, styling habits and fringe decision. Your cutter reads your hair dry and agrees the version of the shag before cutting starts.

Wash and Prep

Wash, condition, towel dry, detangle.

Internal Layering

The internal structure of the shag is cut first, usually with a combination of shear and razor work. The movement is built here.

Perimeter and Face Framing

The perimeter is shaped, face framing is cut in, and the fringe is established.

Dry and Refine

Your cutter dries the hair and runs a dry-cut finishing pass. Weight removal, perimeter softening, disconnection refinement and fringe weight all happen here.

Finish

Styling product, technique demonstration for home, retail recommendations, and a rebook window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Kohort shag different to a Smith Street shag?

Usually, yes. Our cutters run a proper dry-cut finishing pass after the blow dry, which is where the disconnection, layer weight and fringe get refined. A lot of inner-north salons cut the shag wet and finish there, which reads softer once the hair dries.

Can I bring a reference photo?

Please do. Our cutters are comfortable with editorial, referenced cutting and prefer a moodboard or screenshot over a verbal description. Sal Salcedo, Evan Joseph and the wider editorial scene are familiar reference points.

How long does a shag appointment take?

Ninety minutes to two hours for a standalone shag, longer if paired with colour. The time is weighted toward consultation, the dry-cut finishing pass and the blow dry.

Can I pair the shag with copper, cherry, pastel or bleach and tone?

Yes. This is one of the most common Collingwood bookings at Kohort. Colour runs first, cut runs second, so the shape flatters the placement.

How often should I get my shag trimmed?

Eight to ten weeks for most Collingwood regulars. Fringe tidies every three to four weeks in between, no extra charge for existing clients.

Will a shag suit my hair type?

Usually yes, with adjustments. Fine hair carries a shag with lighter layering. Thick hair needs more internal weight removal. Curly hair gets curl-aware dry finishing. Your consultation will confirm.

Is the razor shag or the soft modern shag right for me?

Razor shags read more editorial and piecey. Soft modern shags read softer. Book Billie for razor, Zoe or Sheridan for softer.

Do you do wolf cut and mullet hybrids off the shag?

Yes, and we book a lot of them. Let us know at booking and we will schedule the right chair and time block. Billie, Zoe and Taylah all cut these hybrids.

How much does a shag cost at Kohort?

From around $130 for maintenance and $170 to $220 for a first shag or restyle. Each cutter sets their own rate.

How far in advance should I book from Collingwood?

Saturday first visits four to six weeks. Mid-week usually inside two weeks.
