Northcote's Dedicated Shag Haircut Specialists

Northcote runs on fashion-aware, natural-first hair. High Street's live music venues, the All Nations Park family cohort, the musicians and ABC types who anchor the creative block, and the copper and ginger palette that dominates the inner north all feed into a steady shag haircut book. The brief is clear. Heavy internal layering. A curtain fringe or a full fringe that sits because the cowlick was read correctly. A perimeter that feathers rather than blunts. A cut that photographs well at a Northcote Social Club gig and still sits right the morning after. The Northcote shag client has usually seen the bad version and is looking for someone who can cut the good one.

Kohort is fourteen to twenty minutes south of Northcote at 234 Bridge Road, Richmond. The direct route is straight down High Street, through Clifton Hill and onto Hoddle Street, then left onto Bridge. Our shag book is one of our highest-booked cutting categories and the inner north is a major feeder into that book. Billie anchors the razor shag work with thirty years behind the razor. Zoe cuts modern soft shags with curtain fringes. Taylah cuts editorial shags and long shags planned to pair with her balayage. Sheridan cuts lived-in soft shags that look like they happened by accident.

The Northcote shag brief splits across a few pockets. High Street clients lean editorial, often booking razor shags with heavy layering and piecey perimeters. Westgarth Village and the Merri Creek side lean softer, usually booking modern shags with curtain fringes. The Thornbury end of St Georges Road brings longer octopus cuts and butterfly cuts with pronounced face framing. Clients coming up High Street from Clifton Hill often pair their shag with copper or cherry balayage, which is one of the most common bookings in the inner north rotation.

Northcote neighbours feed the same shag book. Thornbury, Fitzroy North and Fairfield clients cross the same corridor. Brunswick clients come across Lygon Street. Collingwood clients share the same fashion brief. Clifton Hill clients run straight down Hoddle to our door. The shag is one of the inner north's defining haircuts and Kohort is where the specialists who cut it properly actually work.

What Makes Kohort the Best Place for Shag Haircuts Near Northcote

The first reason is Billie. Thirty years behind a razor and a book full of shags that Collingwood, Fitzroy, Northcote and Brunswick music-scene clients have been crossing the city for over a decade. The razor is the right tool for a proper modern shag because it produces the feathered, piecey perimeter that shags rely on, and Billie's razor work is the reason our shag book has the reputation it does in the inner north. Currently welcoming existing clients only, but if you are already on her book the shag is one of the cuts she is best known for.

The second reason is range. A shag is not one cut. Billie cuts razor shags and editorial shags. Zoe cuts modern soft shags with curtain fringes for clients who want the shape without the heaviest razor texture. Taylah cuts editorial shags, long shags and butterfly cuts, often paired with her balayage so cut and colour sit together. Sheridan cuts lived-in soft shags with gentle face framing for clients who want the cut to read as if it happened naturally. Each cutter owns a different version of the shag, so you can book the cutter for the cut you actually want.

The third reason is the dry-cut finishing pass. Most local inner-north salons cut the shag wet, from a diagram, and finish there. The shag then reads softer than expected once the hair dries. At Kohort, every shag runs a dry-cut finishing pass after the blow dry, where the disconnection, layer weight and fringe are refined while the hair is sitting exactly as it will sit the next day. That pass is the single biggest reason our shags hit the brief and other salons' shags often miss.

The fourth reason is fringe work done properly. A shag without a fringe is almost always missing something. Curtain fringes, full fringes, piecey razor fringes, micro fringes and long swept fringes each need a different technique. Your cutter reads your fringe cowlick before committing, because a fringe cut against your cowlick will fight you every morning. Fringes cut with your cowlick fall into place with almost no effort. Sheridan, Billie, Zoe and Taylah all cut curtain bangs frequently.

The fifth reason is colour alignment. Northcote shag clients often pair their cut with copper, cherry, pastel or lived-in blonde. Our colour book includes strong copper and fashion-colour work, and cut plus colour can be planned together under one roof. Colour runs first, cut runs second, so the shape flatters the placement.

Shag Haircut Process and What to Expect

Consultation

Dry hair, natural light, a conversation about references, face shape, styling habits and fringe decision. Your cutter reads your hair dry and agrees the version of the shag before cutting starts.

Wash and Prep

Wash, condition, towel dry, detangle with a wide-tooth comb.

Internal Layering

The internal structure of the shag is cut first, usually with a combination of shear and razor work. This is where the movement of the shag gets built.

Perimeter and Face Framing

The perimeter is shaped, face framing is cut in, and the fringe is established.

Dry and Refine

Your cutter dries the hair and runs a dry-cut finishing pass. Fine weight removal, perimeter softening, disconnection refinement and fringe weight happen here.

Finish

Styling product, technique demonstration for home, retail recommendations, and a rebook window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Kohort shag different to a High Street Northcote shag?

Usually, yes. Our cutters run a proper dry-cut finishing pass after the blow dry, which is where the disconnection, layer weight and fringe get refined. A lot of local inner-north salons cut the shag wet and finish there, which reads softer once the hair dries.

Can I bring a reference photo?

Please do. Our cutters are comfortable with editorial, referenced cutting and prefer a moodboard or screenshot over a verbal description.

How long does a shag appointment take?

Ninety minutes to two hours for a standalone shag, longer if paired with colour. The time is weighted toward consultation, dry-cut finishing and blow dry.

Can I pair the shag with copper, cherry or lived-in blonde?

Yes. This is one of the most common Northcote bookings at Kohort. Colour runs first, cut runs second, so the shape flatters the placement.

How often should I get my shag trimmed?

Eight to ten weeks for most Northcote regulars. Fringe tidies every three to four weeks in between, no extra charge for existing clients.

Will a shag suit my hair type?

Usually yes, with adjustments. Fine hair carries a shag well with lighter layering and shear rather than razor. Thick hair needs more internal weight removal. Curly hair gets dry curl-aware finishing. Your consultation will confirm.

Do you do curtain bangs?

Yes. Curtain bangs are a standard part of most of our modern shag work. Sheridan, Billie, Zoe and Taylah all cut them frequently. Bring a reference.

Is the razor shag or the soft modern shag right for me?

That is a consultation question. Razor shags read more editorial and piecey. Soft modern shags read more curtain-bang soft. Book with Billie for razor, Zoe or Sheridan for softer.

How much does a shag cost at Kohort?

From around $130 for maintenance and $170 to $220 for a first shag or restyle. Each cutter sets their own rate.

How far in advance should I book from Northcote?

Saturday first visits four to six weeks. Mid-week usually inside two weeks.
