Where a full balayage or colour service is a long investment, a gloss or toner refresh is a thirty to sixty minute appointment that resets tone, restores shine, and keeps your colour looking freshly finished.

There is a meaningful difference between a gloss and a toner. A toner is a demi permanent deposit only colour that neutralises warmth, brassiness or faded tones. It brings blondes back to cool, brunettes back to neutral, copper back to its brightness. A gloss is an acidic pH shine service that seals the cuticle, adds high gloss reflection, and can include tonal adjustment. Some glosses are clear. Some are tonal, doing both at once.

At Kohort, we offer both and often run them together. A typical mid cycle guest comes in at the six to eight week mark after a full colour, has a tonal refresh at the mid lengths and ends, a shine gloss through the whole hair, and a blow dry. Under an hour, extending the original colour into the ten, twelve or fourteen week range.

This service is not the same as a full colour, balayage or root touch up. It does not lighten. It refines what is there.

Application is planned. Your stylist applies tonal refresh only where needed, usually through the mid lengths and ends, keeping the root area lightly refreshed or untouched. A full head gloss suits shorter hair and full tonal resets. A zoned gloss suits longer dimensional hair.

Timing matters. Toners sit for eight to twenty minutes depending on tone strength and hair porosity. Porous hair grabs faster. Your stylist monitors and rinses at the exact point the result is right. Rushing is why bad glosses turn purple or grey.

1. Consultation

A five minute consultation in daylight to identify where the tone has shifted and what the brief is.

2. Wash or Dry Application

Depending on the tone type, the service starts at the basin with a clarifying shampoo to reset the cuticle, or with a dry application for more precise placement.

3. Application

Your stylist applies the gloss or toner with intention, zoning it where needed, leaving the root area untouched or lightly refreshed depending on the brief.

4. Processing

Eight to twenty minutes of processing, monitored by your stylist. Shorter for less intense tonal adjustment, longer for deeper reset.

5. Rinse and Treatment

Rinse at the basin, Kérastase Fusio Dose Ritual or Olaplex bond support treatment applied through the mid lengths and ends for shine and repair.

6. Blow Dry and Finish

Full blow dry out, shine spray, and a conversation about when to book the next full colour service.

Aftercare, Making Your Gloss Last

A gloss refresh can extend your tone by four to six weeks with the right home care.

Sulphate free shampoo is non negotiable. Sulphates strip gloss faster than anything else. Kérastase Blond Absolu for cool blonde, Davines Alchemic Silver for platinum grey, Kérastase Chroma Absolu for dimensional colour, K18 peptide shampoo for all types.

Wash less often. Three times a week. Dry shampoo like Kérastase Fresh Affair fills the gap.

Temperature matters. Hot water opens the cuticle and releases tone. Warm or cool at the ends keeps tone locked.

Purple or silver shampoo once a week, not every wash. Over toning at home is the fastest route to flat grey or muddy blonde.

Weekly mask. Kérastase Masque Chroma Absolu, Davines Alchemic Mask or K18 Molecular Repair.

Heat protect before any hot tool, every time.
