Fringe Services

Curtain bangs, micro fringes and heavy blunt fringes cut by stylists who understand how your hair falls before they pick up the scissors.

What Is a Fringe Service?

A fringe service is the cut, shape and maintenance of the section of hair framing the face from the front hairline. The right fringe changes a haircut the way a good pair of glasses changes a face.

At Kohort, fringe services cover three categories. Fresh fringe cuts, where you have not had a fringe before or are changing shape, are the longest appointment because the stylist is designing the front from scratch. Fringe refreshes, which we call a fringe trim, are quick six to eight week maintenance visits that tidy without changing shape. Fringe transitions, where you are growing out or blending a short fringe into face framing pieces, are the most technical because the cut has to hide awkward growing out stages.

The fringe styles we cut most often: curtain bang, a soft side parted shape that starts longer at the face and sweeps into the length. Micro fringe or baby bang, a very short blunt fringe above the eyebrows. Heavy blunt fringe, a full straight across fringe sitting on the brow. Wispy soft fringe, piecey texture between curtain and full. Side swept fringe, falling from a deep side part. Shag fringe, internally layered to pair with shag and wolf cuts.

A fringe decides how your forehead looks, how your eyes read, how your cheekbones catch light, and how often you come into the salon. Your stylist considers hairline shape, density at the front, face shape, eye shape, how you wear your hair, and whether the fringe needs to sit in one place or move with you. Every variable changes the cut.

How KOHORT Approaches Fringe Services

At Kohort, a fringe is a deliberate design choice, not an add on.

Every fringe cut starts with a dry consultation. Hair behaves differently wet and dry, and a fringe cut wet can look beautiful in the mirror and sit completely differently once dry. Your stylist looks at where your cowlick sits, where your hair splits, where the hairline rises and dips, and how density changes across the front. That decides the sectioning.

Sectioning is where great fringes are made. A triangle too wide reads heavy. A triangle too narrow reads sparse. The apex at the crown controls fringe weight. A shallow triangle gives a wispier fringe. A deeper triangle gives a heavier fringe. Your stylist solves this geometry before the scissors come out.

Cutting technique varies. Billie uses a razor extensively for a soft piecey textured edge. Sheree cuts with precision scissors for a crisp polished edge. Zoe combines both, particularly on her shag work. A heavy blunt fringe needs scissor precision. A shag fringe often needs razor texture. The tool follows the brief.

Fringe cutting is done with the client sitting up, not reclined. A fringe cut reclined sits differently when the client stands.

The finish is where home styling is built in. Your stylist blow dries the fringe the way you will at home. If you do not blow dry, the fringe is air dried and finger styled. A round brush fringe you cannot recreate at home is a failure.

Retail for fringe care includes Kérastase Densifique Fondant Densite for fine fringes, Davines Hair Chalk for grit when the fringe goes greasy, and a small flat iron or mini round brush for shape. Your stylist demos the exact tool.

Fringe refreshes are short, six to fifteen minutes, offered as a standalone booking at a friendly rate because hair grows whether you are due for a cut or not.

Who Performs Fringe Services at KOHORT

Three stylists at Kohort are known specifically for fringe work.

Billie, Razor and Scissor Fringes, Creative Edge

With thirty years of experience and a strong editorial sensibility, Billie is the stylist to see for a fringe that reads a bit different. Razor cut wispy fringes, piecey micro bangs, textured soft curtain bangs and fashion forward shapes. If you are coming in with a Pinterest moodboard that features editorial hair, Billie is often the right match. Currently welcoming existing clients only. Book with Billie.

Sheree, Precision Scissor Fringe and Classic Shapes

Twenty plus years of cutting experience and a precision scissor hand make Sheree our go to for heavy blunt fringes, sharp crisp micro fringes and classic seventies curtain bangs. If you want a fringe that looks considered and polished, Sheree is the right match. Book with Sheree.

Zoe, Shag Fringes and Modern Texture

Zoe's fringe work pairs naturally with shag cuts, wolf cuts and long layered shapes. Soft curtain bangs that blend into long face framing, internal fringe layering that creates movement, and modern texture fringes that sit beautifully with natural wave or straight hair. Book with Zoe.

Fringe trims and refreshes are also offered by every other stylist on the team for ongoing clients, including Taylah, Sheridan, Grace and Elodie. For a fresh fringe cut or a major fringe change, we strongly recommend Billie, Sheree or Zoe.

Fringe Services Process

1. Dry Consultation

Your stylist looks at your hair dry, finds the cowlicks, checks the density at the front, and discusses the shape you want. Reference photos are welcome and encouraged.

2. Shape Planning

The triangle section is marked out. Your stylist explains where the weight will sit, how the fringe will blend into the rest of the cut, and what the home styling will look like.

3. Wet Cut or Dry Cut

Depending on the shape and technique, the fringe is either wet cut for precision or dry cut for natural fall. Many stylists do both, cutting the base wet and refining dry.

4. Styling Demo

Your stylist styles the fringe the way you will wear it at home. Round brush, flat iron, or air dried. This is where you learn the home routine.

5. Trim Booking

Your stylist books your next fringe trim six to eight weeks out so the shape does not drift.

Fringe Services Pricing at KOHORT

Fringe services pricing at Kohort varies by stylist and whether it is a fresh cut or a refresh. As a guide, a fresh fringe cut as an add on to a full haircut is typically from $30 to $60. A standalone fringe trim or refresh between full cut appointments is typically $25 to $45. A fringe consult and fresh design cut without a haircut is typically $60 to $90 depending on complexity.

Fringe refreshes are deliberately priced to be friendly because the hair grows whether you are due for a cut or not, and we want regulars to come in and keep the fringe sharp rather than stretching it until the shape is unrecognisable. Most of our fringe regulars drop in every four to six weeks for a quick trim.

Every stylist sets their own pricing, so confirmed quotes come from your stylist at booking. If you are unsure which stylist suits your fringe, email salon@kohort.com.au.

Aftercare, Making Your Fringe Work at Home

A fringe only looks as good as your ability to style it at home.

Do not touch it. The oils on your hands are why fringes look greasy by midday. Tie your hair up, sleep on a silk pillowcase.

Wash the fringe more often than the rest. Your fringe sees your forehead and hands every day. A daily or every other day fringe wash under the sink tap keeps it fresh while the rest stretches to a three day rhythm.

Dry shampoo is a fringe emergency kit. Kérastase Fresh Affair or Davines Dede at the root on day two.

Blow dry immediately after washing. Air drying without direction is why fringes cowlick. The first sixty seconds of drying decides direction.

Use a small round brush or a flat iron. Two to three centimetres for a side to side sweep. A small flat iron for a softer bend.

Book your six to eight week refresh. Six to eight weeks is the sweet spot. Micro and heavy blunt fringes need four to six.

Grow out stage. Ask your stylist to blend at each refresh, not cut. The only way to avoid looking grown out for six awkward months.

A pea of Kérastase 8H Magic Night Serum or Davines OI Oil Absolute on fringe ends before bed keeps hair flat overnight.

Who Fringe Services at KOHORT Are Ideal For

Fringe services at Kohort are ideal for guests who want a fringe shape that suits their actual hair and face, not a generic cut copied from a celebrity photo. They suit guests who want to update their cut without changing the entire length, who are ready to commit to the four to eight week refresh rhythm, and who want a stylist who will be honest about whether a fringe will suit them before the scissors come out.

They suit guests growing out a fringe who want help making the grow out stage bearable. They suit guests with cowlicks, widows peaks or uneven hairlines who have been told in the past that a fringe will not work on them. They suit guests with fine, thick, curly, straight or wavy hair, because a good fringe is a technique question, not a hair type question.

They may not be right for you if you are looking for a one session miracle that you do not maintain, or if you hate any styling effort at home. Even the lowest maintenance fringe needs thirty seconds of directional drying in the morning to sit well. Your stylist will be honest with you at consultation about what the home routine needs to look like.

Our fringe book pulls from every inner Melbourne suburb, with concentration from the inner north. Fitzroy and Fitzroy North guests come for micro fringes, shag fringes, and soft curtain bangs with modern long layers. Collingwood regulars from Smith Street and Gertrude Street book editorial briefs, razor cut wispy fringes and creative tone through the fringe. Collingwood Yards and the Gertrude Street gallery scene drive steady enquiries.

Abbotsford guests from around the Convent lean natural and textured. Carlton, Carlton North and Clifton Hill guests split between classic fringes and soft curtain bangs. Northcote, Fairfield and Alphington clients ask for fringes that work with copper and lived in brunette, often paired with a gloss top up.

St Kilda guests mix foreshore low maintenance curtain bangs with editorial fringes for Palais Theatre events.

From the east, Hawthorn, Hawthorn East, Kew, Camberwell and Balwyn clients skew classic and precise. Soft curtain bangs with long layers, heavy blunt fringes with sharp bobs, refined grown out side swept shapes.
