Fitzroy's Dedicated Keratin Smoothing Specialists
Keratin smoothing is the quiet workhorse of the Kohort service menu, and Fitzroy clients tend to be among the most loyal repeat bookers we have. The reason is part climate, part culture. Melbourne humidity pushes frizz through any wave or curl from November through to April. Cold damp winter mornings along Brunswick Street and Gertrude Street drag moisture back in again. Tram 11, tram 86 and tram 96 run hot dry air at your head every time you commute, and Fitzroy's terrace-house bathrooms are rarely great for slow, careful styling. The end result is lost hours every week trying to coerce textured hair into something it was never quite meant to be.
Fitzroy clients booking Bhave keratin at Kohort fit a few patterns worth naming. The creative industries crowd working in design, editorial, music and the arts want polished, considered hair for client meetings, gallery openings and Brunswick Street cocktail nights without a full daily blow-dry. Hospitality staff across Brunswick Street, Smith Street and Gertrude Street want hair that survives a double shift and still looks tidy for the post-shift natural-wine bar. Academics and writers want low-maintenance hair that reads professional at faculty events and still works on a Rose Street weekend. Young parents around the Fitzroy North border want school-run hair that does not require a GHD. Fitzroy's notoriously fashion-forward demographic wants smoothing that softens frizz without flattening the editorial texture their stylist has built in.
At Kohort we run keratin smoothing exclusively with Bhave, a Melbourne-born, sulphate-free, formaldehyde-managed professional system. Bhave sits well against coloured hair, balayaged hair, fashion colour and previously chemically treated hair. The finish is not a dead-straight chemical straightener. It is a softer, smoother, more manageable version of your own hair, with frizz suppression, faster blow-drying and dramatically reduced styling time. Three to five months of results from a single appointment is normal.
Kohort is at 234 Bridge Road, on the north side of the street between Lord Street and Docker Street. From Fitzroy, the route is straightforward. South down Smith Street or Brunswick Street, left onto Victoria Parade, across Hoddle Street and right onto Bridge Road. Ten to twelve minutes in normal traffic. For a service that reduces your weekly styling routine by two to three hours, the short cross-suburb trip is easily worth it.
What Makes Kohort the Best Place for Keratin Smoothing Near Fitzroy
The first reason is Grace. Grace is our lead Bhave keratin specialist and has put the time into the specific application protocol. Keratin smoothing is a process-sensitive service. Application speed, section size, heat timing, rinse timing, cool-down, and first-wash timing all affect how long the results hold and how the finish sits. Grace runs a consistent, refined Bhave protocol and her repeat-booking rate on smoothing is among the highest in the studio. Billie is our second keratin specialist, with thirty years of colour and cutting experience shaping her technique. For Fitzroy clients who arrive with creative colour, fashion copper, lived-in cherry or bleach and tone, Billie is a natural fit when she has the capacity to take you on.
The second reason is the co-working model. Keratin is not a quick service. A smoothing appointment runs two to three and a half hours depending on hair length and density. Our co-working structure means one stylist is with you from consultation through to blow-out. No chair-juggling, no handing you off to a junior for the flat-iron stage. That pacing is the difference between an average keratin and an exceptional one.
The third reason is bond-conscious service stacking. A large share of Fitzroy clients walk in with some form of lightening, fashion colour or previously processed hair. For anyone with that chemical history, we will usually pair your Bhave keratin with a K18 Molecular Repair or Olaplex Bonding add-on to keep integrity strong through the heat-seal stage. Fitzroy clients who book smoothing often book it alongside a gloss refresh or colour maintenance, and the combination is where keratin earns its reputation for leaving hair both smoother and visibly healthier after a session.
The fourth reason is product alignment. Bhave is Melbourne-made, formaldehyde-managed and sulphate-free. It is designed to be used with a sulphate-free wash routine afterwards. Our retail wall carries Kerastase Chroma Absolu, Kerastase Resistance and Davines Love Smoothing, which all pair correctly with a Bhave finish. Using a wrong shampoo after keratin is the single fastest way to shorten your results, so we make sure Fitzroy clients leave with the right home routine already sorted.
The fifth reason is the consultation. Keratin is not right for every hair type. For Fitzroy clients who want editorial texture, a strong curl pattern or a very lived-in finish, we will be honest about what Bhave will and will not do, and recommend nanoplasty with Elodie or a different pathway if it is the better fit. Fitzroy clients tend to appreciate the honesty more than the upsell.
Keratin Smoothing Process and What to Expect
Consultation
Fifteen minutes in-salon, looking at your hair dry and in its natural state. We discuss your styling routine, colour history, and your expectations around straightness versus smoothness. A quote is given before booking.
Pre-Wash and Prep
A clarifying wash at the basin strips product buildup, mineral deposits and oils that interfere with keratin absorption. Hair is then rough-towel dried and blow-dried straight through.
Application
The Bhave keratin solution is applied section by section, root area to ends, avoiding the scalp. Thirty to forty-five minutes depending on length and density.
Processing
Product soaks for the required development window, usually fifteen to thirty minutes, allowing the keratin to bond into the shaft.
Heat Seal
Fine sections are flat-ironed at the correct temperature to seal the keratin into the cuticle. This is the longest and most technical part of the service. Heat is carefully controlled.
Cool-Down and Rinse
Depending on the Bhave system version, hair is rinsed the same day or left in for the recommended window before first wash. Your stylist confirms exact timing on the day.
Home Care Brief
You leave with specific home-care instructions. Sulphate-free wash 72 hours after, no tying, pinning or clipping for 72 hours, and ideally a Kerastase Chroma, Kerastase Resistance or Davines Love Smoothing routine from then on.
Which Kohort Stylist Does Keratin Smoothing
Grace is Kohort's lead keratin smoothing stylist and the default recommendation for Fitzroy clients booking their first keratin service or transferring in from another salon. She runs the Bhave protocol with a consistency that delivers repeatable results. Book with Grace through the Kohort booking widget.
Billie is Kohort's second keratin specialist, bringing thirty years of colour and cutting experience into her smoothing work. She is particularly well suited to Fitzroy clients pairing keratin with fashion colour, lived-in bleach or editorial short cuts. Getting to Kohort from Fitzroy
Kohort is at 234 Bridge Road, on the north side of the street between Lord Street and Docker Street. From Brunswick Street, Gertrude Street or Smith Street, head south, turn left onto Victoria Parade, cross Hoddle Street and bear right onto Bridge Road. Ten to twelve minutes in normal traffic.
Public transport options are strong. Tram 11 runs down Brunswick Street, tram 86 runs down Smith Street, and tram 96 runs down Nicholson Street. Any of them take you to Collins Street or Parliament, where you can jump east on tram 48 or 75 along Flinders Street onto Bridge Road past the salon. Parliament Station is a short walk from the southern end of Fitzroy.
Driving is easy outside peak. Hoddle Street can slow you down in peak hour, so Fitzroy regulars tend to book mid-morning or early afternoon for an easier run. Metered on-street parking runs along Bridge Road, Lord Street and Docker Street. Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre 500 metres east has paid parking for longer appointments.
Cyclists are well served too. The Wellington Parade separated path feeds straight onto Bridge Road at Hoddle, and the Yarra Trail connects Fitzroy North down through Abbotsford to the salon side. Bike rings out the front.
Fitzroy's neighbours, Fitzroy North, Collingwood, Carlton and Carlton North, run a similar route to the salon, so if you are picking up a partner, friend or school-run kid on the way, the journey is the same.
Keratin Smoothing Pricing at Kohort
Bhave keratin smoothing at Kohort starts from $250 for shorter or finer hair. Pricing scales with length and density. Mid to long hair typically sits between $350 and $500 depending on the stylist and the hair. Thick, dense, very long hair is quoted at consultation.
Add-on bond support is strongly recommended for any keratin on coloured or previously lifted hair, which covers a large portion of the Fitzroy book. K18 Molecular Repair from $50 or Olaplex Bonding from $50 pair well with smoothing. For Fitzroy regulars pairing keratin with balayage maintenance, fashion-colour refresh or a creative gloss, the appointment is quoted as a full booking rather than as separate services.
Keratin is one of the few colour-adjacent services we can quote with reasonable accuracy before you arrive. Email salon@kohort.com.au with a photo of your hair, length and density notes, and your goal, and we will give you a specific range ahead of booking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the trip from Fitzroy to Richmond worth it for keratin?
Yes. Fitzroy is ten to twelve minutes by car, a short run on tram 11 then 48, or a quick cycle via the Yarra Trail and Wellington Parade. For a service that saves you forty minutes of styling every morning for three to five months, the trip pays back many times over.
How long does a keratin smoothing appointment take?
Two to three and a half hours depending on hair length, density, and whether you are pairing it with colour or a bond treatment. Grace quotes exact time at consultation.
What keratin system do you use and is it formaldehyde-free?
We use Bhave, an Australian-made, formaldehyde-managed, sulphate-free professional keratin system. Bhave is not a zero-chemistry product. No keratin system is. It is formulated with significantly lower emissions than older Brazilian blowout systems and suits modern salon ventilation. If you want a fully formaldehyde-free option, we offer nanoplasty with Elodie as a separate service.
How does Bhave compare to Cezanne or nanoplasty?
Bhave is our keratin system of choice. Cezanne is a similar modern keratin brand. Nanoplasty is a different chemistry altogether, using amino acid nano-particle technology, and is fully formaldehyde-free. See Cezanne vs Bhave vs Nanoplasty and Keratin vs Nanoplasty vs Brazilian Blowout for the full breakdown.
Can I get keratin with fashion colour, cherry, copper or bleach?
Usually yes. Bhave is colour-safe and does not strip tone. We pair it with K18 or Olaplex bond support to protect integrity through the flat-iron seal. Very heavily bleached hair with breakage may need a few weeks of bond-rebuilding before keratin is advisable. Grace or Billie will tell you at consultation.
When can I wash my hair after keratin?
72 hours after the service is standard. Your stylist confirms the exact timing based on the Bhave system version used. During the first 72 hours, avoid tying, clipping, pinning or tucking hair behind your ears.
What shampoo should I use after keratin?
Sulphate-free and sodium-chloride-free only. Sulphates strip keratin out of the cuticle and shorten your results. We stock Kerastase Chroma Absolu, Kerastase Resistance and Davines Love Smoothing on the retail wall, all of which pair with a Bhave finish.
Does keratin make hair dead straight?
No. Bhave smooths and softens rather than straightens. You keep your natural movement, you lose the frizz and the lost time. If your goal is dead-straight hair, Grace will walk you through alternatives at consultation.
Can I park near 234 Bridge Road?
Yes. Metered on-street parking on Bridge Road, Lord Street and Docker Street. Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre 500 metres east has paid parking for longer appointments.
How often should I rebook keratin?
Every three to five months. Bhave gradually washes out rather than growing in a line, so there is no awkward regrowth to manage.
